I am ready to install my first CM4221 (after testing a DB4 on an existing DSS J mount).
I got a 10' mast (fence pol) for 12$ from Home Depot and I'd like to insert it into my existing J mount for the 36" dish I have. This one will clear from the roof line and somewhere above the J I'll add another bracket for better support.
What do you think? A 10' on top of a J with an additional support will work?

With another bracket, it might be okay, but 10 feet is awfully long for a J-mount. It will place a lot of strain on it.

this J mount is from a 36" dish, much stronger than the 18" DSS.
It also has 2 additional brackets for better support.

Hey Markham
Sounds like your close to me. I'm just NE of McCowan and 7. Always good to see more Markhamites here :)

When you say and I'd like to insert it into my existing J mount ,
Do you mean the diameter of the fence pole is small enough to fit inside the J-mount? If so, that seems a bit small. I'm not sure what gauge the fence pole is but if it is the same gauge as 1" electrical conduit you should be okay. Just asking since (as far as I know) J-mounts are meant to have the attached pole or bracket mounted on the outside of the J=mount.

If it is any smaller, you might have problems later if you want to add a rotor to your set-up. Just trying to make sure you are "future-proofed".

Looking forward to your results

Cheers

The mast I bought is 1 1/4" and I have seen it inside of 18" DSS J mount.
Yes, you are right, a DSS dish is attached on the outside . The mast should get inside with no problem. Tight fit. Just one screw to hold the together.
I am not looking for a motor at this time. Do you have one?
The J I want to use is from a 36" antenna, and I believe it's the same diameter. I'll try installing it tonight and post the results.

What markham wants to do is fine.

Did this at my parents over 2 years aga and I can hang on to the pole and it will not move. My parents live in Markham.

It will easily support my weight weight, plus the antenna.

Not currently. But I'm always wanting to tweak my set-up :)

Trust him... After you hang around these forums for a while you begin to learn a few things.
Lesson #1: If Yaamon says it will work, then it will work.

It will easily support my weight weight, plus the antenna.

Yaamon, maybe you should buy a ladder ? ;) :o !

Hello all,

I have an old reception TV antenna on my roof that looks like a big triange with pines. I think the wires comming out are in a brown plastic and 2 wires. How do i get that connected to RG6U and when connecting to my TV where does it go? OTA signal is very new for me.

Thanks.

you need one of these found at some Dollar Stores or worst case "The Source".
Coaxial Cable Push-On Balun 75 - 300 Ohm Adapter with Quick F Connect Matching Signal Transformer Balum, 75-300 Ohm

Yep, you need a balun. It converts the 2 wires to a single coax.
However, you might get better reception if you rewire to the antenna, having the balun terminate below the antenna and using RG6 into the house.
The old 2-wire setup is not the best for signal retention along runs past a certain length (too much noise).

Also, the source should be your LAST EFFORT. They're like 10x more expensive than other places. Try Home Depot, Princess Auto, Walmart, Canadian Tire, wherever. They're quite common.

That you very much for both of your responses but is there a way to get rid of the 2 wire and run coax directly to the antenna and how many OTA channels will i get? I have a Samsung LNT4681F

75-300 OHM OUTDOOR BALUN/ #10 WIRES
nohtml(75-300 OHM indoor/outdoor matching transformer with Balun #10 wires. Converts 300 Ohm antenna or television contacts to a 75 Ohm female connector. Contacts designed to attach to the back of a television set through a standard threaded mating screw. Outdoor-rated plastic housing with weather boot for coaxial connection. Heavy gauge wire leads for durability. Specifically designed for outdoor antenna applications. )

This is the type you need, hooks-up to your antenna, you run your RG6 from it down to your house. Not allowed to give you the site but google search this and you"ll see what I mean.

google this: outdoor+balun

You shouldn't pay more than 5$ (even less) however, make sure it is of good quality as you do not want to go up the roof every 6 months/year. It should have cover for weatherproofing and should be made of rubber.

Where are you located?

Welcome here Blankstare. First of all, please read through the links at the bottom-right of this post to get up to speed on OTA. This site is Canada's leader in OTA information and user assistance. We can still be of help to Americans too.

As for your old antenna, it might not be suitable for modern Digital OTA TV so if you could post a photo or a brand/model number we could offer better advice. :)

Base on the description of his antenna it should cover both LF and HF and therefore it should normally be sufficient to cover OTA as it rides on the same old frequency band as the old analog one. Right?

Most digital OTA stations are UHF. Let's wait and see what he replies.

Pics need to be uploaded to a picture sharing site like Flickr, you can then post the URL link in your post.

You should also check the grounding wire from the antenna, nothing like having a lightning strike FRY your TV or even worse SLOW STATIC build up fry your tv tuner for good.
