: A10 Grand Wega release dates
simonm 2005-08-27, 02:46 AM Are you positive Sony would allow you to still purchase an extended warranty after the 2nd year(with a VISA extension)? I too have decided to pay by credit card to double the original warranty and would love it if I could go for a few more years after that.
One other question--Sony's first year DOES cover the bulb I believe, so if my VISA doubles THAT warranty doesn't that mean we get 2 years of bulb coverage?
JASON
Good question, here is what I found on the Sony website
"The Plan Coverage Period will start upon the expiration of your original Sony manufacturer’s limited warranty and shall run for the number of years of Plan coverage that you have purchased. Initial Plan purchase must be made prior to the expiry of your original Sony manufacturer’s limited warranty and renewals must be purchased prior to the expiry of any preceding Coverage Period. Maximum combined original manufacturer’s limited warranty period plus Coverage Period(s) is 5 years from date of purchase except for VAIO computers* and Plasma Displays* which is 3 years."
So sound like my plan won't work. But I will for sure call Sony to verify.
Your 2nd question, I don't think the original warranty covers the bulb, the bulb has only a 90 day policy. Again, one of the questions I have for the Sony people.
MrC1ark 2005-08-27, 08:40 AM Looks like prices are coming down already. FS today had the 55" A20 with a sticker price of $3599, $400 less than it was a few days ago. Hope they do the same on the 50" A10 when it comes out next week.
I noticed this as well. How long has the A20 been out in Canada, about a month? I'm wondering if the same will happen to the A10's. For the first month they'll the leave the price high to catch the early adopters, and then in October they'll drop the prices. For me I'm waiting for the price drop-- with the plasma drop and the 1080's coming out it's inevitable and I'd hate to pay 300-500 more just beacuase I couldn't wait a few extra weeks--heck, I've already waited almost a year to pull the trigger!
JASON
Superfine 2005-08-27, 11:43 AM With the new Sony price at $3199, I'm confident you could get it around $2900 with some haggling. That's about 10% off. I've dealt with Sony before and the saleman said he can approve 5% off but to go higher he has to have it approved by the manager. I'm not very good at this haggling game so, I'm sure other will do much better.

The problem is that the price is dropping so fast that you could be waiting forever ;) If you wait till Oct, then why not wait a few more weeks for the Christmas sale.... And if you wait till then, why not wait for the boxing week sale... And then you hear about new and more exciting models coming out soon, and there will be clearance sale on outgoing models .....
I think it will be at least a year or two when the technology becomes a little bit more mature, the market growth slows down a bit and the price would stabilize somewhat.
markb 2005-08-27, 02:29 PM Is it just me or does anyone else ever notice that Future Shop, Best Buy, Visions, or any other electronic retailers always sell these products for less then what is listed on Sony's website. Expect the same here. Sears will be the only ones to sell for the same price.

Yes, you are right. MSRP is just the asking price. Kind of like when buying a car. If they get 2 out of 10 people paying full MSRP then they are laughing. But most people always try and negotiate the price on a car or TV but some just pay what is listed.

functor 2005-09-01, 12:42 PM I went up to the brick yesterday as Sault Ste. Marie doesnt have a futureshop or best buy. I got the dude to look up the a10 on his system. The 50" was listed as $3129.99 and available september 24th. FS and BB will likely be a little lower.
functor 2005-09-01, 02:36 PM just contacted some buds I got @ BB, they are saying Sept 15th they will have them. Their price still says $3299 for the 50" and $699 for the stand. I'm guessing that will change lots once it hits the floor.
Norbi 2005-09-03, 01:38 PM Hello, I am in the market for a new television set and happened to drop by this website ... helped me out a lot ;)
I currently own a JVC 27" CRT, and am planning on getting the new Sony 50A10 ... i stoped by The Sony Store in Mississauga as they had the 42" model on display ... I had my JVC for about 5 years now, no HD at all, so i'm pretty sure that most of the tv sets these days would amaze me ... the 42" that they had on display had RogersHD feed going to it, some sort of concert was going on...
If i understand correctly, the main difference between the older and the new A10 model is the addition of the IRIS ... well, since they had the old and new model almost next to each other, i did see a lot of difference between the two ... the picture on the A10 seemed more clear, and of course the blacks were a LOT "blacker" ... i have previously seen the WE620 by itself and it seemed very nice, the picture quality was nice, but i guess it's not until you see the two side by side that you see the difference ...
The sales person told me that both of the sets were running the same HD feed, i did not mess around with settings, so whatever the sets were set to is what i'm basing my opinion on ... again i'm not an expert, so as far as i'm concerned the A10 looked a lot better ... i was sitting about 5feet away from both sets ...
The design on the A10 is much cleaner, the older model looked a lot bulkier ... one of the reasons i didn't get the 50WE620 is because of it's size, the side speakers made it too wide for my built in wall-unit ... this isn't the case with the A10 model though, as i said, it looks a lot cleaner, and a lot smaller ...
I do have one question though ... I currently own a non-progressive scan DVD player ... is it worth it to purchase a progressive scan DVD player, or even one of those HD upconverting DVD players???? .... i saw the Samsung one at Futureshop for about 170 dollars, but not sure if the picture quality will make that big of a difference ... if anyone can help me regarding this it would be much appreciated ...
Thank you, and keep up the good work on this website ;)

It's up on sonystyle.ca... September 15th availability. Ottawa Sony Store says in the next week or two they'll have it.
Now the question is whether to get the 42" or the 50". Hmmm. Interestingly, I did a comparison on their site between the two A10's and the two A20's and with the exception of resolution, the A10's have more bells and whistles.
vanrobson 2005-09-04, 10:59 PM well, since they had the old and new model almost next to each other, i did see a lot of difference between the two
Sony store has a A10 running? Sony rep said they were not making the A10 available until 620 stock is depleted by retailers. Somebody may get in trouble :)
The A10 is a great set. Mine is now greyscale calibrated and it definately look better than the 620. Adjustments are not the same as the GW3 or GW4 so dont use the old GW threads on avsforums to calibrate the tv.
Oops i'm not supposed to have A10 yet in canada maybe i will get in trouble :)

Yeah, i was just as surprised ... i was calling around that day, went to one of the Sony stores in Brampton, and the sales person took me to the back to show that he did in fact have one in the box ... so i assumed most of the stores would have it, it was just a matter of finding one that had it on display ... and yeah, one in Mississauga did ...
I ordered the 50" two days ago, the delivery date is this Thursday keeping my fingers crossed ;) i can't wait ...
MrFong 2005-09-06, 10:34 AM Talked to a dealer over the weekend. The release dates have been pushed back THREE times so far, due to the inventory levels being carried by FS and BB. Apparently they have enough sway with Sony to hold back product releases due to their poor planning. I mean, come on, they've known about this new line since the Sony line show in March/April. They've just been trying to be too greedy in keeping the prices up, and now they're caught with their pants down.
Estimated pricing was discussed at $2300 (40") and $2700 (50"), with expectations that they will furthur drop prices to match the price decreases of the Panansonic plasma TVs (which you can now get for $1999 for the ED version). Most typical consumers will go with a ED plasma over the Sony, simply due to the 'cool factor', so I'd be surprised to see the 40" Sony sell for much more than $2K once released.
That said, he was talking about the 50" being available in two weeks, and the 40" by the end of September.
vanrobson 2005-09-06, 12:19 PM Not just FS and BB, London Drugs too. The 42 seems to have clear out already but the 50 has not. We have A10 in stock now waiting for Sony to OK us to sell. Maybe we will be allow to sell the 42 model first? If the wait continues we may see SXRD sets before the A10 sets.
MrC1ark 2005-09-06, 12:49 PM Hey guys, just got back from Sony Store in Masonville Mall in London Ont. They had the 42" on display--absolutely beautiful picture! They were running the coldplay concert, with lots of dark shots--lots of shadow detail IMHO. They had the A20 right beside it and there was an obvious increase in shadow detail in the A10. The price tag was 2599. I asked the guy at the counter when the 50" were coming in, he said not sure but there were already 8 on the waiting list. I asked the price--3199. He then said, 'but if you're interesting in ordering one we could probably work something out'. I hadn't even asked for a deal yet. He played with his calculator and quoted me $2950+tax(no stand). So before their even out they are selling them at a $250 discount. He also said they would do a price guarantee for 30days. Having said all that, with the Plasma price drop and the way the A10's keep dropping in the US I think I'll hold off a bit longer--I have a feeling BB and FS are going to be offering a pretty sweet deal on these early on(after the initial early adopter gouge).
Having said all that, after seeing the A10 in action with a good feed I can honestly say that this is the one--the TV for me. I did go afterwards and see the 620 at FS which was playing the same feed. Very similar quality but the blacks were a bit greyer and now that cabinet looks HUGE. It may take me another month to comeup with some extra cash but I think the A10 is worth the wait.
BTW I actually started considering the 42", which I figure I could get a deal on as well. I'm 7-9 ft. away and wonder if that might be a good option. 4:3 would be the same as my 32" which IMHO is a pretty good size, I just need more screen size for football/videogames/movies.
JASON
MrFong 2005-09-06, 01:14 PM Price updates from our friends in the US:
42" on sale at BB for $1599US (reports from other chains as low as $1488US), which works out to $1768 - $1900 CDN.
Lowest I've seen the 50" for was $1888US (~$2250CDN).
Retailers/buyers on the list, are you listening? ;)
vanrobson 2005-09-06, 01:36 PM Ive seen the 50" for $1785usd or $2125cdn. That is below our purchasing cost. I always told people to buy from the US it's cheaper!
But with all list price if you know the tricks you can get it for very cheap. I will bet that when the 50" is available you can negotiate your way to around 2500-2600cdn.
