Okay I did some poking around. Seems like when the KFE's come out, $1999 will be a common sale price around the Holidays. That you can bank on.

FutureShop and Best Buy ARE getting these TVs, they're already in their systems and the warehouse has some on order (though they're not available yet).

Store cost for the 42" is just under $1600.

So I guess I had a good deal for the KDF-E42A10 @1999.98 and I also got the Stormak stand at Ikea for $79 + taxes.....Future shop actually matched the Sears pricing that showed the 42 inch too but no indication it was a KFE.

For the KDF model? Yes, absolutely. You did a great job there.

I called a Sears in Toronto today, and after I gave him the item number that someone graciously mentioned on this site, he too verified that the sale price was indeed $1999 and that they could order one from the warehouse today.

They do not have a floor model just yet though, it is still on order.

I couldn't wait any long, so today I got a KDFE50A10 at The Brick. I was about to order the KFE50A10, but then another salesman told us that they were dropping the price of the KDF to match Tepperman's ($3000, including a stand). The stand they were including wasn't the greatest (and the girlfriend didn't really like it) so I asked if I could get the matching Sony stand instead. They let me get it, paying a $50 difference. So in the end, I paid $3050 for the KDF 50" and the matching Sony stand. Since the stand costs $450, I essentially got the TV for $2600...$100 more than the Sears one, but with a cable card slot / tuner. Hopefully I'll be able to use those sometime in the future. So I'm happy with the price I paid, and if the price goes down even more when the KFEs come out, I can probably get some money refunded through their price matching.

Well guys and gals I pulled the trigger today ;)

I Got KDEF50A10 + original stand + delivery + taxes = $3,167.00

All that from ..... tada ... tada ... The Bay.

I went to Sears and tried to figure out confusion from their flyer. They made a mistake in printing and in their system and after going through their computer and lists with a very friendly salesperson we figured out that the one in the flyer is KEF (withour tuner and cable Card slot) -- the same model they were selling it last week for $2300 is now $2500. He told me that they don't sell KDEF at all even though it is on their Web site?!? Anyways ...

Last Saturday when I went to BB KDEF50A10 was $2,599 there (today it's $2,999). In order to look for other quotes I ended up in The Bay and they said they'll match the BB price and that offer is valid for a week.

That was no brainer for me since my son just started working in The Bay he was told that the Bay will honour 10% employee's discount so we ended buying it today. Delivery is on December 7.

Okay seriously folks.
Half of the reason we're all so confused is because everyone is messing up the model numbers. So far we've had just about every single different variation of K, F, E, and D.

So, to clear things up:

Sony KDFE42A10 (42" Original w/ tuner)
Sony KDFE50A10 (50" Original w/ tuner)
Sony KFE42A10 (42" without tuner)
Sony KFE50A10 (50" without tuner)

Wow Colexico, sounds like a really good deal. I did some math and it seems you got the same price as me for the KDFE50A10 (I double checked that model number, Laura :) ), but managed to get the 10% discount. I'd beg you for a picture of your reciept or something so The Brick would price match mine down, but I have a feeling they wouldn't match employee discounts. Dang.

Good job, and congratuations on the purchase.

No problem mate if you need a reciept I'll scan it for you but as I mentioned it includes 10% discount for The Bay employees. Other than that we got the same price. My calculation shows:
2600 for TV + 400 for stand (yes i got $50 off) + 50 for delivery + taxes
-10% employee discount.

Thanks and I am sure you'll enjoy yours too.

Hi Old Spark,

The picture looks very nice. Your TV matches very well with the Ikea stand. It is a shame that they do have one for 50" HDTV.

I saw it from the picture that you seem to have a Philip DVD player which is the same as mine. If that is the case, can you tell me how does it work withh the A10 since I am going to get the KDFE50A10 shortly. I am concerned that it may requires a upconverting DVD player to enhance the performance of stardard DVD on a HDTV. Does DVD pictures look good on the TV?

For those of you who had bought A10, did you also commit in extended warranty? If so, did it cover bulb replacement?

I have checked with Sears, they provide 4 year EW at some $550 covering the TV bulb (up to 3 replacements).

I gave in and got a 5 year EW for $275 at The Brick (it was originally $350 but he knocked it down when I hesitated on it). It does NOT include bulb replacement.

$550 at Sears is probably not too bad, considering you'll probably have to replace the bulb at least once, so you save that money ($200ish dollars I believe), plus have the peace of mind from knowing that if anything goes wrong you're covered.

In general, I think EWs are not a great idea...you WILL lose money in the long run if you always get them. Still, maybe they're worth it just so you don't have to worry.

Hi Guys,
I've been drooling over the KDF-E50A10 for some time now...I'm glad I found this forum to get good information.:D
If anyone's interested, the Sony Store in Mississauga at Mavis/Britannia has a 'prototype' of the KF-E50A10 (that's what the salesman called it). He said it just came in yesterday. I didn't look to see if it had the PC input or not.

Is anyone offering a discounted price on the 50A10 Sony Stand?
Seems bloody expensive - tempted to get an Ikea stand, but the Sony one does look good with the tv. Hate to cheap out when spending $2500+ for the tv.
Can someone offer a good alternative stand perhaps?
If you've bought something different, maybe you could post a photo somewhere...I'm sure others would be interested to see.

I bought a 3 year warranty with a local shop here in my city. The difference between the warranty at the shop vs. that covered by sony is that sony won't replace the unit on a warranty issue...ever... sony will always try and fix it. the local shop here will replace the unit if they have to do 3 or more service calls for it.

no shop here to my knowledge will cover bulbs on the warranty. they all say their life (bulb) is too random and depends way too much on how well the customer takes care of their TV.

At any rate I love the A10, it's a great TV, just a shame that there are so few HD channels, it's really REALLY hard to go back to SDTV after watching a few good HD programs.

Yes. I have my Philips set for 480i output and the quality seems *almost* as good as the 1080i HD output from my *Choice DSR505. I think the reason for this is because the Sony has very good line doubler/conversion circuitry, NOT because the DVP642 is any great DVD player.

In fact, when I set the Philips DVP642 to 480p, the picture becomes quite small on the Sony, and I have to use the Sony's 'zoom' feature to watch it properly.

With the bigger screen, I can now see the compression artifacts on many of my XVID rips, which I try to keep under 1 Gig.

I've only had the Sony for two weekends now, so I'm still playing around with settings. The *Choice DSR505 DVI output doesn't work very well, as an example...

Thanks for your information. Could you tell me if you use s-video output or component output from your DVD players. What I want to find out is if A10 has the upconvert capability on component input.

Wow, you guys are awesome. If there was a deal to be had, you guys found it....

did you do any negotiation on the big cables, surge protector etc. There's been a bit of a debate regarding monster cables, monster power bars vs. other not so brand names. I saw that Visions had a deal on the AR cables (40.00 off). Is anybody grinding for cable deals?

There's only 1 HDMI port, so I use component from the Philips DVP642. My understanding is that the Sony A10's native resolution is 720p, so it must convert everything to that format.

I'm not a big one for 'brand name' cables. I bought some nice looking cables at monoprice.com at very reasonable prices. If you try to keep the total under $15 bucks, you shouldn't get charged PST, GST or the $5.00 Canada Post brokerage fee.

I use a Geek Squad 685 VA UPS which has some surge suppression built-in.

Is it's surge suppression as good as a Belkin or Monster surge suppressor? Probably not, but I have yet to crack it open to see if they use both MOVs and avalanche diodes, or just the MOVs. Then again, I live in a fairly new house, in a subdivision with the wiring underground, so how much protection do I really need?

I got the TV from Sears. There's some conflicting information about the extended warranty, as I've heard that it covers the bulb, but came across a posting or two (either here or another forum) that said otherwise.

I was told be the salesman that it covers the bulb, and that it starts on the day you purchase it; and you can wait till the end of your 1 year warranty to buy it. This means that a 5 year extended warranty truly adds 5 years to your existing warranty. Whereas at places like Bestbuy or Futureshop, a 5 year service plan is really 1 year manufacturer's warranty plus 4 years.

I will have to confirm those points with Sears as there have been conflicted information. If anyone knows any more, please let us know.

The Sony extended warranty can be purchased up to the end of the 1 year as well. So you do have some options if you don't want to decide on the extended warranty right away.
