: 'Canadians will fall in love' with new governor general
vancouverisland 2005-08-03, 09:51 PM Michaelle Jean At just 48 years old, the award winning journalist will become one of the youngest governors general ever, the third woman in the job and the first black person to call Rideau Hall home. (http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/08/03/gg050803.html)
Is anyone going to miss "His Excellency John Ralston Saul" or "Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson", our current governors generals?
james99 2005-08-03, 10:06 PM Ya, I'm in love. I want a divorce.
dialog_gvf 2005-08-03, 11:44 PM BABE!
Wow. She's our new head of state?!
Oh Canada!

You be the judge ;)
HammerJoe 2005-08-04, 01:46 AM First, why does Canada continue to have a Governor General which is nothing else than just another money pit for our taxes and all they do is travelling at Canadians expense.
The days of lavishing should be over, life is hard as it is.
Get rid of that post once and for all, I am not slaving myself to pay taxes for some appointed sob to be travelling around the world.
Second why are we continuing to give high positions in the Federal governement to Quebec residents which use constantly the threat of separatism??
Wasn't there anyone else in this friggin huge country good enough to do this joke of a job without being from Quebec??
Dang it I am pissed with the waste of our tax dollars.
vancouverisland 2005-08-04, 02:19 AM You be the judge ;)
you left out HIS EXCELLENCY's (http://www.gg.ca/john-ralston-saul/index_e.asp) mug...
Posts deleted. Let's keep Quebec/Alberta bashing out of this.
buritto 2005-08-04, 08:41 AM I wouldn't call it Quebec bashing but many people feel that Canada has been going down hill in key areas and many PM's have been from Quebec and remaind in office for long periods of time...no?
DavidY 2005-08-04, 09:02 AM Hope that she is not a big time spender like the last one.
Dave
Proteosome 2005-08-04, 09:03 AM Is it just me or does she seem like a very politically correct appointment? Not to detract at all from her accomplishments or merits but:
- she is a refugee from haiti
- she is a she
- she is a minority (black)
- she is from Quebec
She likely is very capable but it just seems that she conveniantly fits a lot of those PC requirements.
biglyle 2005-08-04, 09:12 AM The Govenor general position should be abolished. With out health care system in a complete shambles this is definately money that could be better spent.

It's Québec bashing if you're conveniently ignoring the fact that it's been 21 years since we've had a GG appointed from that province! About time, wouldn't you say? :D
eljay 2005-08-04, 11:32 AM First, why does Canada continue to have a Governor General ... Well, according to the Monarchist League of Canada (http://www.cnw.ca/fr/releases/archive/August2005/03/c6999.html), it's to......strengthen Canadians' understanding of our Constitutional Monarchy, and enhance [our] appreciation of how the Crown acts as the big tent under which we all can find our place...Big tent. Three-ring circus. Hmmm... :D
Nanuuk 2005-08-04, 01:30 PM I'd woulda preferred somebody from Global. :o
Jeanne Sauvé (1984-1990) was french but not Quebecois. As was Roméo LeBlanc (1995-1999).

Of course Mme. Sauvé couldn't be Québecois! :D She was, however, an adopted Québecoise, living much of her life in the Montréal area and representing the Ahunstic riding in the House... M. LeBlanc was a francophone native/resident of New Brunswick.
Alan Bealby 2005-08-04, 04:19 PM I think the complaints about the cost the GG office is a bit of a red herring. If Canada did away with the GG postion, wouldn't it be likely replaced with a head of state position? If so that would cost money and, in addition, it would likely be an elected postion which would have the cost of an election every 5 to 10 years. That would not be cheap.
For me, she seems an interesting and good choice.
CenturyBreak 2005-08-04, 04:29 PM For me, she seems an interesting and good choice.
Indeed. In addition, given that the GG's purpose is representation rather than policy (that's the reighing government's purpose...) and her background as a social activist and advocate for the less-privileged, it seems she represents much of what we hold dear as Canadians... strikes me that her budget should be increased in order that something actually gets done in these areas during her tenure! :D
dialog_gvf 2005-08-04, 05:01 PM She likely is very capable but it just seems that she conveniantly fits a lot of those PC requirements.
Ah, but what about those CP requirements?
Enquiring minds...
Nanuuk 2005-08-04, 05:59 PM Well since I'm not a Monarchist, we should abolish the GG, separate the Executive from parliament so that the PM would be head of state.
