I took my 505 back today to the Source, got my money back and went to Futures Shop to pick up the 505 for $129. This is my second 505 and a DVI cable was included with both.

I talked to customer service today when I was activating my second 505 and I was told that the software update is scheduled for October 6. He said that it will hopefully solve most of the DVI problems and it will definately get rid of the annoying pop-ups.

Is the DVI cable include ?

Yes, there is both a DVI-DVI cable and component cables included with the DSR505.

I only have an HDMI ouput on my display. Will an HDMI-DVI cable works as the same to an DVI-DVI cable?

THANKS

An HDMI-DVI cable will work. Your other option is to buy a DVI-HDMI adaptor which slips on the end of the DVI cable and allows you to plug it into the HDMI input on the TV. This is the setup that I have. The adaptor is usually a lot cheaper that a DVI-HDMI cable.

Good find. It's nice to see you didn't spend the $189 on the Monster cable.

You only get a dish if you're a new customer. The installer brings it and installs it professionally, no charge. If you're already a subscriber, you just get whats in the box - the receiver, remote, and cables.

If you tell the guy you want to install the dish by your own?

Good point. I should have clarified the price is $129.99 for new and existing customers. I doubt that existing customers get the PPV credit though.

Unless things have changed over the last few weeks, the $50 PPV should be applied for all customers activating a HD unit, new or existing.

You do tend to have to remind the CSR/TSR activating the unit sometimes though...

Same here, but make sure you look at the the HDMI connection (gender) that's on your TV before buying. MY Sony has an HDMI male end. The DVI cable that comes with the 505 also has male ends. The Sony store was the only place that had the right DVI-HDMI (FxF) adapter for my situation and cost $50. The Source and FS also had adapters but they only came with MxF or FxM ends which didn't work for me. Adapter is way cheaper than buying the DVI-HDMI cable.

Good find. It's nice to see you didn't spend the $189 on the Monster cable.

Let this be a lesson to all who contemplate buying Monster cables. You're paying over $150 for the word "Monster" and the fancy packaging! The cables aren't crap by any stretch, but they are not worth the tremendous markup over generic cables.

:-)))))))))))))))))))
There are only a few ways to do that:
1) Buy the 505 from an installer who also has a store front. Therefore, he will stock dishes. However, he can charge you whatever he wants for that dish.
2) Buy the 505 and call Star Choice to mail you a dish. If you're a new customer, this will be free of charge (except maybe shipping). This is a hassle and will probably involve 2+ weeks to mail the dish.
Keep in mind that you loose out on the 2 year warranty on install and exterior components when you install it yourself. Unless you're in one of the really really rural areas with no installer, I wouldn't bother doing it yourself. Let the pro do it, it doesn't cost you anything extra.

P.S. If you're looking to have the installer come out with a dish and then tell him you'll do it yourself, that probably won't work. In order for him to get paid by Star Choice, he needs to go back to them and say he's installed the dish for you, adhering to the strict regulations. If 2 weeks from now the dish blows off your roof and through the neighbours front window (because you've installed it), he/Star Choice would still be technically liable for it. No installer wants to subject himself to that.

P.P.S. I'm not saying you don't have the skills to install it, I'm sure you do!! There is just always the "unforseen" that has to be considered...

My dish is installed. I'm a client still 1997 with Star Choice. By saying tell the guy you want to install it yourself I meant: pay 129$ for the receiver and get a new dish that you can sell back to lowered your 129$.

The issue becomes finding somewhere that carries Star Choice dishes. Because retailers don't anymore, you need to find an installer or a specifically satellite store and buy one there. Price is not guaranteed because recievers aren't sold as a "package" with dish anymore.

If you've got an old round dish and want one of the new e-dishes, call Star Choice and ask for the upgrade program. Its super cheap and they'll come out and install a new dish for you. You get 2 years warranty on top of that too.
