I may have a problem with my 505, I'll ask here before calling *C.

On high definition programming the picture quality is great, of course. And we all know what SD programming looks like in comparison.

However, on ALL the SD stations I receive there's little horizontal lines running right up and down the middle of the screen. They're not always visible but if the background is red, for instance, they show up as black. This isn't a problem with the TV. This issue only shows up on the SD stations.

Has anyone else encountered this? I wouldn't even know how to begin to describe this to a CSR because it has to be seen to be believed.

What are your RED Button Settings? 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i, Native
What are your Video Settings? (Options 6-4-5) The 4:3 Overides settings?
What connection type between DSR505 & TV? Coax, Composite, S-VID, Component, DVI?

I wouldn't rule out the TV just becasue HD is OK.

Depending upon interactions with any and all of the above settings, the box may be sending a displayable, but incompatable signal to the TV.

Example: 480i is not spec'd over DVI but MAY work.
4:3 overide at 480p may not be supported on your TV inputs
NATIVE mode is 480i on SD and some TV's Component wants 480p or higher.

I'd play with some of the various settings first.

I have a Sony 51" with a HDMI input on it and my starchoice DSR505 w/ a DVI input. I purchased a DVI to HDMI cable for 50 bucks and hooked it up correctly, goto input 7 (w/ is the HDMI input) and i get a blank screen no audio. Starchoice says its b/c Sony didnt comply w/ proper HDMI standards and starchoice has to wait for a new software upgrade from sony in the next few days to fix this issue. Now this TV is from late 2004, and as working technical support ive heard that "software upgrade" lie a few times just to appease customers. Was this tech agent at *C lying or has anyone got any ideas why i get no pic/no sound with my HDMI interface ?

Many people are having issues with DVI, especially with HDMI.
Try connecting the cable, turning on your TV and the receiver, then holding the front power button for 10 seconds on the receiver. The receiver will reboot, and it may or may not "handshake" properly with the TV. If it doesn't, you'll just have to wait for the next update.

I have 00.34. Seems good, when you leave options the video flickers. but it has 12 hour time! Thank goodness. I have noticed that when I press info and exit, it doesn't work. I have to actually press go back or enter which is annoying, but livalbe.

Anyone else see anything? I wanna play with the new toy.

Still on 00.14 here with no target. Must be performing the usual incremental roll-out. As long as the 'not subscribed' error goes away and order-ahead pay-per-view are fixed, I'll be happy.

I'd really like an increase in font size in the IPG too, but I would say that's about as likely as something not very likely indeed!

still on 00.14 here also. I really really want to be able to order my PPV credits at any other time than the 1 minute window.

i have a 505...anyone try the caller ID option? Does the receiver need a reboot, or does *C send a download for it? Anyways, just hooking it up doesn't seem to do anything. And yes, i have Caller ID on my phone.

Thanks

I don't think it's the font size as much as the black is too black and the white is too white.

It looks like the graphics are way outside of the NTSC safe zones if you ask me.

Also the highlight on the top half of the little bubble bars cause havoc by tearing through the font's.

It's not too bad with a calibrated TV, but it sure looks bad on a pawn shop special.

I'm sure they'll fix it, but likely have bigger fish to fry right now.

I'm sure they'll fix it, but likely have bigger fish to fry right now.

If they haven't done it by now after 3 years (people have had issues with the readability of the IPG since the release of the DSR500), I'm certainly not going to hold my breath.

And for those of us with less than 20/20 vision, even on a non 'pawn shop special' TV, it's a pretty BIG issue and something that on the face of things, is quite insignificant to change.

... is quite insignificant to change.
You're right, it's quite trivial, that's probably why it got missed or lost in the noise of all the lockups and lost recording of the 530 unit.

I guess I just didn't see all that many complaining about it on the forums here. Some, but not a lot.

Now that they are aledgedly merging the code, when it's fixed in one of them, it'l be fixed in all of them.

With the 505 code on the way out to everyone, I'm hoping for a new 530 fix in March that will keep all the good things that 00.BC brought, but get rid of the slightly more frequent crashes.

Let's cross our fingers on some guide readability improvements as well.

As I'm getting older, they eyes aren't what they used to be either.

And the dimmable display as well. & Caller ID.

Now I can move the 505 into the bedroom were the 500 has the display turned off. It was too bright at night.

Looks like ARR was right again!

The not subscribed error is fixed. PPVs can be ordered in advance! Caller ID works. DVI now works for me too, but I'm not sure if thats a coincidence or actually something that has been fixed.

1.) I guess that *C Tech wasnt lying when he said they were going to be doing another update in a few days (that was yesterday)

2.) I still have version 00.14.......how do i get it to update ? the stupid "subscription" popup happens about 1/2 the time i change a channel and the 24hr clock is a pain also i want my darn DVI port to WORK

Anyone know if the new version fixed the DVI Issue ? 50 buck cable can be returned in 15 days do i wait ? How do you get "the update" or does it just randomly happen ?

This sounds like it might be a staggered download.
They've done that in the past to manage call volumes associated with a download.
Usually each day, a percentage gets targetted to receive the new code that night. You wil know a few hours in advance when you check option 6-4-7 and it has a non zero target version. In this case 00.34

Everybody should have been targetted by the end of next week if history holds true again.

If there's a problem for your receiver to get it that night, it will keep trying for a week. Then it WILL get it for sure. If you see a target, then place the unit into standby that night to increase your chances of getting it first try.

I can't test DVI here, but it sounds like maybe they have made some improvements. Mostly I like the new features and the pop-up is gone.

Good show Starchoice!

I called *C to ask why one of my 505s has 00.34 and one has 00.14 when they are both on the same account, and I was told this was going to be a BC type thing: a certain number are targetted and the rest will wait for later. The tech couldn't say how long as she said she was not told. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, I noticed that my off air antanae works now! Not real big as I almost never watch it, but its one more thing to throw onto the list.

A percentage is being targetted each weekday this week and next.
By the end of next week, ALL will have been targetted.

See my previous email as to why.

How it it's done I have no idea. Maybe by unit address or serial number or some other method. Maybe a random pick of the first 10% in some database, who knows.

I can see why they are being cautious, some recent donwloads caused problems and if something serious does show up (Unlikely given how long it's been since the last code d/l) they will be able to minimize the fall-out by not having the entire population go buggy.

There is a lot more 505's than 530's right now due to the lower cost.

Thread Unstuck.

If you are experiencing difficulties, I recommend you review the new thread with Feb 7th Update (http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37927) for the 505

I have the same issue on my Sony 42 in. A10.Line running right down the middle of the screen. It's not always visible, though.Only on certain scenes. And it seems to have only showed up recently(past week or so)
I haven't recieved the update yet, so I don't think that's it.
