cellarboy 2006-01-02, 11:07 PM I got a 505 for $129 last Wednesday after 20 minutes of the sales person trying every excuse under the sun to convince me the price on the web couldn't be honoured (the $70 is a Starchoice rebate, it's below cost, they don't have any in stock, it's a web-only price, it's limited stock....you name it). Spoke to the manager and he ok'd it in a second.
Had so much fun I took my mother-in-law to buy one the next day. Had to go through round two of the same thing. Fortunately her mentioning she'd bought a $1700 TV from them the day before sealed the deal!! :)
Anyone in Calgary who wants one, the Coventry Hills location had about 9 after my mother-in-law got hers!
PrimeBane 2006-01-02, 11:53 PM LOL... that's where I got my new one tonight... sales girl wasn't going to let me have it until I asked to talk to the manager. He okay'd it. :D
I think I'll definately get another one down the road... since this sale seems to be on until March, I should have LOTS of time. :)
I believe they have 2 or 3 left now at Coventry Hills FS.
bonkerz 2006-01-03, 04:19 AM I just got the 505 and I have a Toshiba 52HM85. I tried hooking it up via DVI to HDMI but it doens't seem to want to give me any picture. It all works fine with component cables however. Anyone have this problem or any suggestions?
thewatcher 2006-01-03, 11:31 AM I have a Sony, and I find I have to reboot the starchoice 505 whenever I want to watch HD with the dvi to hdmi connection. I press and hold the power button on the receiver for about 10 seconds, it reboots, and I get a picture. This might work for you.
dpiedra 2006-01-03, 01:26 PM I have a Toshiba TV as well and I gave up on the DVI-HDMI connection since I had to reboot it every time and even then it wouldn't hold. Every time you turned off the receiver the TV would lose the signal and the whole thing had to start over. The helpdesk at SC said that they are still having problems with the connection for the 505.
I've hooked it up with component video and my reg audio and it looks and sounds exactly the same without the hassle.
It wouold be nice if SC and its retailers told the buyer of these limitations or technical difficulties.
...I do wish there was a dimmer for the face of the 505, that thing is bright.
Yes, I like that feature in my 530, can't wait for it to be ported into my 500 and 505. Sometime soon I hear. Plus 12 hour clock as well!

Don't expect most retailers to ever know much about Star Choice. I'm just happy if they let me walk out the store with the box - I've had Future Shop sales guys refuse to sell me receivers because "we don't have any dishes in stock to go with it".
All the TSRs and any CSRs familiar with the 505 know about the DVI limiation - because component works so well, maybe its not always high on their list to mention.
buritto 2006-01-04, 03:25 PM Well I called SC on Boxing Day to order my DSR505 for $228.85 total and was told that it would take about 7 days to get to my house. Today, day 8 it's still not here so I called SC and asked if I could cancel that order and get one at a local store, no problem they said. Needless to say after seeing here it was at the FS for $129.99 I picked one up and saved a bunch and now have an instal date for this Saturday...just in time HNIC-HD!!!
SchneiderIS 2006-01-04, 05:22 PM Shaw owns SC so that really doesn't wash.

What doesn't wash?
Nakai 2006-01-05, 03:14 PM Damn , I saw the sale at FS a couple days ago and it said it was going till January 27th so I figured I'd hold off a bit and pick one up soon. Now the website is back to $199
Is there anyway to go into the store and still get the $129 price? They have them in stock at my stores nearby but I didn't print out the page when it had $129 up there.
PrimeBane 2006-01-05, 05:30 PM I think you may be out of luck Nakai. Sorry :(
Odds are they will go on sale again for at least $149.99... keep watching the FS and BB websites. :)
buritto 2006-01-05, 08:55 PM My local FS yesterday still had all thier floor stock at $149.50 ;)
scrooloose 2006-01-07, 01:35 PM Can someone refresh my memory as to what hidden menu options take you to the factory reset option for both the 505 and 530 please? I've been searching this forum for about 20 minutes and can't find them, yet I know they've been posted many times!

Hold the power button down for a loooooong ten "mississipi steamboats". This should reset your units.
scrooloose 2006-01-07, 09:36 PM No, that's just a reboot, not a factory reset, which clears everything as I understand it. I'm looking at selling my unit so I want it back to default.

thewatcher 2006-01-13, 06:58 PM I'm thinking of getting an optical cable to connect the 505 to my Sony DAVFX100W. I'm kind of at a loss as to what cable to get - I looked at monoprice and found this one - is this what I want?
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10229&cs_id=1022901&p_id=1419&seq=1&format=2
That will do the trick.
Optical TOSLINK is the companion to 75 Ohm Coaxial SPDIF cables.
BOTH deliver the identical bitstream, just 1 is over Copper and the other Glass.
The signal can be either PCM or AC-3 depending upon the set top settings and virtually all modern a/v amps will accept the cable and signal types.
Good price on it BTW!
