Last night my new dsr505 froze up on me and has died! everything seemed to work, guide changing channels with the remote but all I had was a frozen image on the screen. I tried unplugging it for a few minutes and replugging it but all I get are the orange lights on the front of the receiver moving upward. It will not power on. There was a 45 minute wait for *c cs so I went to bed hoping it would be ok this morning but it was the same. I will be trying *c this afternoon when I get home but in the meantime does anyone else have this problem or know about it? Thanks

I just spoke to CSR today and I was told that "the firmware release has been delayed". I couldn't have figured this one out on my own!?% When I asked when they were expecting the firmware to be released they just said that they have no target date.

Bummer.....that pop up message is getting really annoying.

When I was activating my 505, I had what sounds like a very similar problem. Had menu frozen on the screen and receiver was non-responsive. Had to do a manual reset, done by pushing and holding down the power button for about 10 seconds. I think the unit takes about a minute or less to reset, and the scrolling of the orange lights is part of the reset process.

The freezing happened a couple of times, and seemed to be related to rapid succession of pushing numbers on the remote while in the menu screens. Since activation I have not had the problem however, though I have been cautious about how quickly I enter number choices in the menu.

Good luck...
J

Especially if your unit is connected to an HTPC. My issue is that BeyondTV will tune to the proper channel, but if the pop-up happens, then you end up having it on during the recording (unless you manually get rid of it after the recording has started). If it isn't fixed soon, I may try getting *C to reactivate my 405 and ask to have the multi-receiver fee waived until they fix this problem.

I inadvertently pulled the plug while the 505 was on. When I plugged it back in, I had the same symptoms described here. When I unplugged it again, waited maybe a minute or less, and plugged it back in, all was well.

Hi guys,

How many of you are using the 505 with the DVI port ?

A friend of mine who just got his, was told by SC that the DVI is having problems at the moment but future firmware in near future will fix this.

He hooked up his plasma tv to the DVI port of his brand new 505 last week and after some 10 mins or so the picture just went off. He called SC and that's what they told him ( read up at the top )

Strange stuff. Anyway he's switched to component cables and doing it tht way now and has no problems. Kind of depressing that the DVI port is NOT working properly on the 505s.

Anyone else experiencing this problem ?

Check out this article (http://www.digitalconnection.com/FAQ/HDTV_12.asp).

I'll post the relevant paragraph for instant gratification:

It is important to note that many manufacturers are producing products on the infancy of the format, and proper implementation often takes many tries. This is an inconvenience to the consumer in that like computers, many of their new video devices will require "upgrades", often in the form of firmware to fix or correct improper operation, which can be done via transmission (i.e. cable and satellite) or by a disk upgrade (DVD players).

I was also made aware of a situation where the tech. from the TV manufactured was called in and identified that the display also had old firmwware and either replaced a chip or re-flashed it and corrected the problem.

I think it may have been either LG or Samsung on a large flat screen type.
Kudo's to the TV manufacturer for 'doing the right thing' rather than pointing fingers at the set top manufacture.

Knowing that Starchoice is taking the high road and is attempting to make their firmware 'more' compatabile with some display, I hope the TV guys will do the same.
It wouldn't be the first time somebody else's problem (TV) was fixed easier by another party (set top).

I guess that's just life in the fast lane...

Hi guys,

Has anyone experience a very LOW audio level on their 505, when it you had hooked up to your TV using the COAX cable input ?

I bought a 505 for one of my TVs, and since it was not a HD television, I just hooked it up using the coax cable as I it was with my older 305.

Weird stuff - the audio coming from the 505 receiver is so so much lower than the audio that was coming from the 305.

I had to turn the TV way up to hear it properly. Now, the TV I have also has component cables, so I decided to try it that way, and hook up rca cables for the audio, and now it's fine.

However, I still have the coax cable coming from the 505 going to my ATI All In Wonder TV card, and now recording anything from TV is basically useless because the audio level is so low.

Has anyone else experienced this ? .... for a new 505 box, this is very depressing, and I wonder if they are all like this

I hadn't noticed. I have the 505 hooked up using pretty much every input and haven't noticed any audio issues, just the known issue of HD channels having lower audio than the other ones. And the commercials on HD channels being twice as loud as the program itsself.

Have you checked the audio setting in your 505 setup menu? If it is set to Hi Fi, or no compression it will drop the audio coming out of your TV signifigantly.

At $129 I could use one or two but I only see the $199.99 price as well.

00.14 is the lastest Ver. software. The target ver. or next ver. is presently 00.00. This means there is no scheduled version update at this time. The target ver. number will change when a new ver. is scheduled for update.

I must then reset the unit by pressing the power button for 10 seconds and lose my settings. *C suggested leaving the 505 on continually or using component cables until the problem is rectified.

Looking on page 11 of their weekly flyer ads for edmonton there is a receiver for $129.99 - a $50 programming credit for a price of 79.99.

talking to a local store they said that the offer is for the package (ie includes dish) and is available only to new customers.

they did say that existing customers could buy the 505 only (no dish) for $129.99 and that you would not get any programming credits

Just got a dialogue zone reply stating that the firmware upgrade "has been postponed until further notice" and that it won't happen until possibly "the 1st quarter of 2006", but that this is "not definite". Too bad, as I was quite hopeful that the glitches would be soon fixed. Guess they have some work to do yet before it results in the improvement we are hoping for.
