Hey everyone... So ive had my Toshiba 42HD82 Rear projection TV for about a year and a half now and its been really great to me throughout that time. Until today...

I turned it on this morning and this strange gray color came on the screen and next thing i knew the screen went black. Now i can turn it on and off but there is absolutely positively no output from the TV, no video and no audio either.

I saw a thread on this site that had this problem before and was wondering if anybody had an idea why this could happen, what can be done to fix, and how much. I called a local service center and they wanted 150 just to come and look at the tv!

I dread the day when a friend advised me not to purchase the extended warranty on the TV.

Please help

Check to see if there are no reset button on the back of the set.
Un plug the set and plug it in. It may reset the electronics in thre set,
If you are located in Toronto area there is a company in Woodbridge called CINAVIEW
Excellent work,Toshiba authorized repair and reasonable priced.I used in the past

Good luck with your problem

Greetings

Impossible to trouble shoot over email. YOu need to get it fixed ...

Them coming out for that amount likely gets waived if they do the repair work. Time is money. A plumber charges $100/hr just to come and look too ...

Extended warranties are simply insurance. If you can't afford to pay out of pocket 2 or 3 years down the road ... then you get the insurance. Sometimes you guess wrong. Sometimes the insurance company guesses wrong.

one should note that it is possible to try to troubleshoot this yourself ... buy what you think is the right component to get things working ... but if you guess wrong and the set is still broken ... you have a dud component and are no better off. At least when the repair shop fixes it ... there is a warranty that comes with their work ... they screw up ... you don't pay any more.

good luck though

Thanks for the tip Michael... I think I will just call for repair. Although I read that a few sparse others have experienced this exact same problem, i am curious to hear how any of you have had it fixed...

Just a thought... but "funny gray colour then black"... is the bulb OK?

ooops... I see you said no audio either.

Hmmm... the only way it could be bulb if the TV is smart enough to check for a bad bulb and lock itself out if it's bad?

Folks... I have an update. Per a suggestion on another thread, I unplugged the TV from the power last night and left it out all night. When I awoke this morning I plugged it back in (this is supposed to 'reset' the electronics in the unit).

When I turned on the TV this morning, woila! I had audio but still no video! Well, the audio lasted for about 2 minutes and then it stopped and reverted to previous behavior of black screen without any audio OR video. So I have left the TV on for now and every once in a while I will hear white noise coming from the unit but that has also ceased...

Any thoughts?

See the Digital Home FAQ "Things to check first". Unplug/replug the TV. If nothing works, time to call service.
