altaman true no Need to argue I I also figured it was stored on the Hdd myself, But found out today or confirmed today that there has to be built in memory in the system's them self.

My replacement 9200 was sealed in plastic etc, but had a number of dirt marks on the outside. It re-initialized as if it were new but the condition of the outside casing makes me think it was a refurb. I noticed the the plastic cover on the optical out port was a different colour on the new one and the front LEDs are much brighter. So at least there were good indications that the new one was from a different manufacturing run.

Since this is happening so frequently, I'm really starting to wonder if it is a physical failure with the HDD or the controller or whether it is a firmware glitch. It's possibly just corrupting the HDD (a bad write or something) and not a physical failure. HDDs and HDD controllers should be very reliable these days.

Here is a question for everyone: what time of day did you first see the 0551 error? Mine was first thing in the morning, after I was watching it late and as I was watching it go through the 3AM system update. I'm wondering if it is a self corrupting problem, possibly tied into the 3AM system updates? So has anyone watched during the day, and then later that same day received the 0551 error?? Or are we all seeing it the first time we start watching on that particular day?

Well for me it was first thing in the morning as a side note I have my update at 7 am and this was about 9 am when I turned it on. Is your new unit still made in Mexico?

The replacement unit they send me better be in good condition. I also agree that it could be a software issue or something corrupting the hdd.

Mine was first thing when I got home from work...seems to be be leading to the 3 am update!

I'm assuming you didn't watch it that morning before work then?

I watched the update process on Saturday night. It gives you a warning that it's about to happen for about a minute. Then does the HDD diagnostics and a reboot (with the subsequent guide download).

I am highly suspecious that it is a logical, not physical corruption and that the 3AM update has something to do with the 0551 error. And I would speculate that when they get these units back, they just re-flash them or re-initialize them and everything is fine. If DrewSat is still around, I would be interested to hear his thoughts on it?

Nope not till I came home and well things have now gotten worse, the video has now quit! If I leave the 9200 off for a couple minutes the video starts working but stops shortly thereafter...in short it is FUBAR! :(

I just went through this error 0551 last week. Being away for a week, 10-15 new recordings went down with the HDD. My replacement 9200 was scratched up on the side, leading me to believe that it's a refurb.

Now that I`ve gone thru the 551 error and received a replacement 9200 I have to wonder what happens after the first year warranty is up? Probably be SOL  I notice in other threads people have been buying extra hardrives and using them in the unit with good luck. Would this fix a 551 error by swapping in a new hardrive? Maybe a hardrive that has already been in good use with the unit? Has anyone tried this? Thanks.

Well I tell you what my plan is...I have ordered in a Maxtor 7Y250M0 SATA drive and am converting an external case to SATA. I am going to disconnect the internal drive and use the Maxtor. Note that the drive that is in the 9200 has a tamperproof sticker so you can not take the drive out without voiding the warranty. Also there are only certain drives you can use in the 9200 and they are:

WDC WD2500JD-57HBB1
WDC WD2500JD-55HBB1
WDC WD2500JD-57HBC0
Maxtor 7Y250M0
SEAGATE ST3250823SCE

These are all sata drives and there are apparently IDE drives that the firmware lists but I have not listed those.

some Excellent Info, I have read the same thing about the Hdd's and I found some more interesting Info, on the board that is in the unit.

Came home from work today to discover that I've had a hard drive failure on my 9200.."Serious Problem Detected With Your Hard Disk Drive Error Code 0551" was what greeted me when I turned on the receiver.

Well guys, welcome me to the club:mad:

Wow. This is not good!

With so many failures there must be a batch with a problem.

HD are usually pretty relible and find it hard to believe they would be failing so quickly.

Which is why I'm thinking it's a software corruption. The hardware should be more reliable than this.

I'm concerned about what's going to happen when the warrenty year is up.

Someone who knows how to do it, should add a poll to this forum so we can track how many members have a 9200 and how many have received the 0551 error.

This is Priceless What a Company, I get a refurb after 2 month's the box says New lol I open it up there are several scuffs on it, i call to get it up and running and the agent says it wont let him as it says it belongs to another customer, like i did not know that, anyway then tells to call back in 4 or 5 hours, and now been waiting for 15 min so far for a supervisor,

My 9200 died three weeks after install (Aug 29) and was immediately sent new receiver. No probs so far, except was affected by the glitch of Oct 12 that wiped out my smart card id.

I like the idea about a fan. I have an old fan from a cheapo air hockey game that I'm going to try for cooling. My concern is possible noise interference on my RPTV or my HT receiver.

rkh,

Maybe you could also try the non-volitle memory dump? I seriously doubt it will help fix the problem but I also believe that this is probably a software corruption and that the problem is likely fixable without a hardware replacement.

If we only knew what to reset with a JTag or something?
