I purchased a Toshiba 52HMX85 with the matching black stand for $2,999 + taxes = $3,448. I got it at Stereo Plus in Orleans, ON (next to Ottawa).

I ordered a 52hmx85 (not delivered yet). My personal computer is equipped with a Dvi interface. It stores many digital photos that I wanted to hook it to the tv and display these pictures on the tv using a Dvi to Hdmi cable.
I used a dvd in the past but the resolutuion was not good so I expected to get a better resolution this way.
I downloaded a manual for the 52hmx85 and it says that the tv should not
be hooked up to a computer. I looked at some other Toshiba models and
they say the same thing.
Any suggestions?

Greetings

The computer will work with the set all right, but you will have some overscan issues that cannot be resolved from the TV end. By stating this computer thing ... they effectively are saying that they will not entertain any computer related inquiries wrt the TV performance.

Are other manufacturers also saying that they will not handle any Hdmi related problems.
Is the Hdmi on Samsung or Panasonic having less problems compared to Toshiba.

Hi ... I just bought a 62HMX85 ... and have a couple questions. I have connected an Ilico receptor model Explorer 2200, this should be digital but when I whatch TV I can see the pixels in the screen, The quality of the image is not very good . I' m connected through S-cable directly to the TV. DVD's are excellent as long as their in wide screen. Also since I'm connected through Ilico, I can't use Ch Scan, is there any way to bypass this.
Thanks in advanced to all who respond.
Joel

I hate to tell you but only HD content is going to look decent on your TV. Think of how much bigger this TV is compared to a 27". The picture is stretched way beyond its intention. Try blowing up a JPG photo that someone sends you, and even blowing it up a little bit causes the photo to distort and pixelate. The other thing is the Illico Explorer 2200 is not high definition is it? I did not think it was. Even on digital stations with a digital box you will get distortion when the HD channel happens to play a movie or a program that was not filmed with an HD camera.

hi thanks for answering. I still can't beleive that there,s no way I'll get a descent image on this TV... is there anything that can be done. I mean these sets are not just for watching DVD's ... or are they??

Buy a BellExpressVu PVR 9200... high definition 2 tuner pvr. 180 hrs SD recording or 30 hr HD. Plus a built in OTA HD tuner.

Thanks for following up, I currently have Illico with videotron, but only the base model. Do you think another receiver with them would give me something as descent as the one you mentioned who by the way sells for over 500$. ouch!!!

Videotron does offer High Definition channels and a High Definition receiver. You can find it on their website, or at the FutureShop or Martin and Breau in Quebec. This will greatly improve your picture quality on the high definition channels, but the standard definition (SD) channels will still look poor. Especially with Videotron. I was with them originally and switched to satellite because of the poor quality of their channels. CityTV was bad, ShowCase was bad, WGN, KTLA, and several other channels were bad. I read somewhere that Videotron is cramming too many channels into the same bandwidth. The maximum number of channels should be 3 and Videotron is stuffing up to 13 channels into 1 QAM. This means they are over-compressing their channels. The channels that seemed the clearest were the Movie Network channels. I left them specifically because of this. I went with StarChoice because Bell has ripped me off once too many. StarChoice has problems too, their DSR530 is buggy. It works, but it is not working as it should. They claim to be fixing it. No date as to when it will be fully fixed. The Bell 9200 does offer more features and seems to be much more reliable. If you don't have a thing against Bell you may want to go to them. I may even switch to them next May if StarChoice doesn't fix their 530.

Well I couldn't resist... went to the soundsaround sale in Cgy saturday to see the prices, never bought because it was a GONG show there. had a chance to talk to a toshiba rep there he was quite helpful and could easily list off the differences between the Tosh sets. I would have taken at least 2 hours to get one there so I called my Visions dealer and he matched the price plus more.

52HMX85 + matching stand + 6120 bev, $2825. Not sure how long this will be deal seeing how fast the prices are dropping?

The picture on this tv looks fantastic, thanks to this forum as a great resource to help out on the purchase

That's an excellent deal! I paid $2999 for my 52HMX85 + matching stand. Both are in black and they make my living room look so good.

The only thing I don't like about DLPs is that I can see the rainbow colors sometimes, but it is usually only in dark scenes, and the 2005 models have improved upon this. It is not as bad as the rainbows I saw with the 2004 models. When they delivered my new set, they delivered the wrong model (2004). I had that for 2 days until they came back with the correct model. I REALLY noticed the rainbows in almost everything on the 2004 model, but they did something to really fix this in the 2005s.

Good luck with your set. I absolutely love mine. I can't stop going to the living room to check out how nice it looks.

Hmm, is the Futureshop website telling lies ? ... I was looking at the
Toshiba model just now ( 9:18 am September 12, 2005 )
: 52HM85 on the FS website,
link here:
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0770HDS0010062402&catid=11299

It clearly says:
"At the heart of Toshiba's 52HMX85 52" Widescreen DLP HDTV is the HD4 chip. Combined with TALEN: Toshiba Advanced Light Engine and the Toshiba Radiance quick start lamp system, the 52HMX85 gives you amazing viewing quality"

Are you guys saying that Futureshop is misleading us ? .... they say this TV uses the HD4 chip, but below I see that somebody says all Canadian TVs are using older HD2 chips....

Ok I'm totally confused....

This is a great debate.... the Toshiba Rep I spoke to at Calgary said HD4 in 52hmx85. either way it has a great picture, which is what really matters.

There is NO debate. Toshiba's website used to incorrectly say it had the HD2 + chip, which caused confusion. Toshiba's website has been updated, and now says the 52HM85 has the HD4 Chip.

To add to the confusion...
My 52HMX85 came in the box said... HD2+ technology!!

But I am sure it has HD4...
I think still there are no official specs on XXHMX85 series on Toshiba website!

I believe the confusion is coming from something else. From what I understand, the new 2005 models are black. I purchased the 52HMX85 after lots of research. Both the 52HMX85 and 62HMX85 have the HD4 chip. The 46HMX85 however, does not! The 46" TV (in Canada) still has the HD2+ chip. If you are toggling back and forth between 52", 46", 62", it can be very confusing because they all look the same on the outside. I wanted to puchase the 46" as it would fit into my living room better, but after finding out that none of the 46" sets in Canada have the HD4 chip, I changed my mind. They only have HD4 in the US on the 46". Hopefully this will clear up some of the confusion. I bought the 52" because it had the new chip. Also, it is only 3" wider than the 46" - not much of a difference, and the price was not very different either.

while we are on this topic, can somebody clarify for me what the HD4 chip is ? .... is this an actual chip ( computer) that is inside the TV ? I'm assuming so,....

I'm a total newbie to this stuff but am learning with all of your help.

Ok so if this is a chip, then this HD4 is a totally new computer chip inside the TV which does what exactly ? like in our case we are talking about HD4 and HD2 chips....

what would the HD4 chip do better / faster than the HD2 chip ?

thanks in advance guys.. :D
