My dealer already changed my set once as they said they had some problems with the first batch the received. Even some dvd's do not play very well. Anyone having similar problems?

kramer001
Do you know which batch or date on the set(?) had problems?
i have the same set here and i am seeing lots of grains on the DVD. Does any one does not have this problem?

Thanks
Raj

Sorry, the set is gone so don't know what date it would be.
I think you, I and the previous poster can all agree on the graniness of these sets. Even my dealer thinks it is too much grain but it is only on std def stuff.
If I use a dvd that was made THX and play on my panasonic with colour comp. The pic is beautiful. I just bought Sin City and it is so clear.
I know its b/w pic, but you don't see any grain on the black.
I was playing Seinfeld dvd's and the show broadcast from 12 years ago is not too good but the commentaries which are recent are very clear.
I believe these sets are made for only a good quality digital broadcast, any thing less will be inferior to a 27" CRT.
Keep in mind, I was at Sony store looking at the new A10 and looks great with HD but when I had him put on cable tv, it was very grainy as well.
I will make my final call when I upgrade my TV signal

see my post earlier in this thread

something is not right with these sets

i think either they are defective or need some kind of perfect choice of components and/or tweaking to look right

sd is one thing (although sd on my 51 hitachi crt looks pretty good...it's the strecth mode that i hate) but i watched 4 different dvd's at fs and they all looked really bad

seinfeld episodes look really good by the way, the episodes were all remastered..well...i guess i better try one on my hitachi because they all looked really good on the sony wega 27

maybe they are only designed to look good with hdtv and nothing else

i've just purchase a 46hmx85, i hook up the colorstream hd-1 for dvd using component cable and watch" the last sumurai" and the color was great, are u using hdmi cable? i've hook up my main cable right to the shaw hd box, and from there go to my tosh, colorstream -1 for my dvd, and colorstream 2 for my hdtv, all using component cable, sounds for both are coming from the recever, so far so good, also with this new DLP, do they still has a burn-in issue? it is still best for me to watch the 4:3 program in stretched mode(theaterwide 1 )?

Hey guys, here is my first post.

I've been reading all of your posts and they have been great. Very helpful and full of insight. I have been doing alot of research for HDTV's for a while and it really comes down to DLP for me. The price point to quality ratio cannot be beat IMHO. That said, I have read people getting the 46" HMX85 for as low as $2200 before tax. Is this a reality, and where should I go for such a deal? My options are between FS, Visions, and A&B Sound. Thanks for all your help in advance, I will have a lot more questions in the future.

Hi BuddyPenny, welcome, we, the consumers always have the power, there are deals out there, but at the same time, some guys do have to make their living, being fair i think if u can get this tv w/ the stand for about $2500, is a good deals, you'll love this tv,remember the tv does seems small inthe showroom, i'm so glad i settle on a 46 instead of the 52's. go for it and enjoy.note: the regular cable broadcast is better then expect. I've waited so many years for the HDTV dust to settle, now I'm glad i've switched.

Jamal - Did you try changing your default setting on your DVD player to component Cable, rather than S-Video. I had poor quality prior to switching this setting on my DVD player.

Hi there. I just purchased a 52HMX85 from A&B sound on the weekend (got it delivered yesterday). I would highly recommend them, they gave the best price (before and after haggling) over FShop and Bestbuy, and in fact their reg. pricing is better for warranties (FShop and BB charge ~570 for 5yr warranty onsite, A&B is $300 for 5yr).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

I see alot of what I think is grain on DVD's (although my wife thinks differently). I'm using HDMI to DVI cable to my new upconverting DVD player (LG LDA-531). I see the grain on all the modes I've tried. I've yet to do any color calibration however, so I think this will dramatically improve things.

On HDTV its awesome though, as well as SD (its alot better at SD shows than the Samsung DLP's).

After using the set for about 4 to 5 days I have found the grains are DVD specific.
‘Troy’ looked very good; ‘Last Samurai’ was also good. The one of the older DVD I had was’ Citizen X’, had grains in the background areas (under light areas)
Picture quality improved a lot with the preset setting ‘Movie’, so currently I am using that setting with light temperature set at ‘Cool’. I am using component cables from DVD player.
SD looks good on some channels (specifically in the night time)
I have not yet tried the HD. (not sure to get DSR500 or DSR505 for *Choice  )

I totally agree with Henryhenry. Here's the skinny: at A&Bsound (the best to deal with) I was able to get the TV down to $2,200 and the TV stand at $140. This is the lowest price I was able to find in Vancouver, if you are in Ontario, my research shows that it is possible to get the TV down to around $2,150. Best of luck.

Hi, everyone,

It is so interesting to read all your posts concerning the subjects which I have so much interest in.

I have almost decided to go for the XXHM85 at FS or BB, until I found out that it does not have VGA/SVGA input. I like to watch the programs I have downloaded to my laptop on the TV and I'd like to simply connect the laptop to the TV with a cable through a VGA/SVGA input. At the present time, I have to go through a slews of steps on my Windows XP and control panel to be able to use the TV as another monitor.

Because of this necessity, I have not gone ahead yet to get the Toshiba. On the otherhand, Samsung TVs have this input. I wonder if I am making a right decision?

I just bought a Toshiba 52hmx85 for $2999 including the stand. I was originally looking to buy the Toshiba 46hmx85 TV, but found out that this TV contains the HD2+ chip, while the 52hmx85 and 62hmx85 TVs contain the newer HD4 chip along with some other improvements. The new US version of the Toshiba 46" DLP does have the HD4 chip, but in Canada, they don't have it. None of the guys at Future Shop seemed to know this. I settled for the 52" as it is only about 3" bigger in size and doesn't cost much more, plus you get the better chip.

As far as grainy picture goes for SD, that would be normal. Most SD recordings were made for smaller TV screens. If you were to take a 480x360 size JPG photo on your computer and blow it up to 800x600, it would look grainy and pixelly too. This is what happens once you start stretching video. All of the HD TVs have a problem with SD because of this situation. The good news is that HD is becoming more and more prevalent, and the HD broadcasts look awesome. I can't wait for Smallville to start in a couple of weeks. I'll be watching the new season in HD. :-) I don't expect a clear picture when I'm watching "I Love Lucy".

I also had this tough decision last week before buying my DLPTV.

The samsung DLPs have have bad lag playing xbox games etc (Ive seen this first hand - mostly on games that are 480i - although many 480p ones do it on their models too). Most people recommend the Toshibas if you like to game or have an amplifier (which most of us do who buy these large TV's).

On the Toshiba 52HMX85 I just purchased, there are zero lag issues for audio or the xbox. Its absolutely a fantastic TV for both HD content (using Bell Express HD receiver), DVD, or game playing! I have it hooked up to my 2 year old Yahama amp with DD5.1/DTS/THX sound and 5.1 speakers/sub.

I'd take another look at the Toshiba 52HMX85 model if I were you (their also brighter than the samsungs, and their fan in the unit is quieter, after seeing them side by side i also prefer the Toshiba HMX picture quality too, etc). Sure it costs a bit more retail than the Samsung 5064, but you can easily haggle it down in price and the Toshiba stand is cheaper than the samsung (and looks better IMHO).

If you have any additional questions feel free to ask. Hope this helps, I wouldn't trade my 52HMX85 for anything!

Thank you, Kared, for your advice.
I am not a gamer, so I am not too concerned with the lag in gaming. The connectivity to PC/laptop, however is a bigger concern to me. From reading the manual of the Toshiba HM85 someone posted here, it even has a warning not to connect to a PC. I am really disappointed because I did think of getting the HM85. Now, it seems I have a very narrow selection.

Regarding the laptop connection…
If you want to watch video's form the laptop you should be able to do it using the audio video connection or the S-video connection (if your pc/laptop has one) I am currently doing the same to connect my Toshiba laptop to 52HMX85.
Even I wanted to have the VGA input on the TV, but finally I did not want to buy the old technology (HD3 or HD2+). If you really wanted to use the pc to browse then may be VGA to HDMI (or component) adapter is the way to go (that is what my plan is)
Panasonic has a 50 inch dlp(2+) model which has VGA port, but it does not let you stretch the image to fill the screen, so not much use for browsing the computer.

What about when you are watching a TV show that was recorded in the 4:3 format. Does the 52hmx85 allow you to stretch the screen then? I read somewhere that the satellite box would need to do that, but mine does not appear to have that functionality. I'm hoping the TV has an adjustment that would do that.

You can use theaterwide 1 to watch the 4:3 program, actually not that bad. While I'm on the subject, did anybody know whether I can change and PROGRAM each individual Picture setting ( Sports, Movie etc.) to my liking? (Contrast Brightness etc.)? They're all factory setting. 46hmx85

Thanks HenryHenry. I just finished reading that in a Toshiba manual that I downloaded from the net. They also mentioned that you can select TheatreWide 2 which will chop off some of the left and right/top and bottom, but it will maintain the aspect ratio of the screen. That's very cool!

Here is the link to the manual:

I kind of pulled a miracle at Future Shop. We got the 62HMX85 for ~$3700. This price includes tax and the stand.

Please re-confirm your purchase details.
Did you really pay $3,700.00 for the Toshiba 62HMX85, tax, and black stand at FUTURE SHOP?

Are you an employee at FS?

Which FS location was it, and the salespersons
first name and store phone number, if you can supply it as I would like to duplicate this package price. Thx.
