: Toshiba 46HMX85, 52HMX85, 62HMX85 in FS
I saw a 52HM84 at Future Shop going for $2999. What is the difference between the HM84 and the HM85?
I also saw a Sony 55 A20 and the picture was gorgeous. It was just beside the Tosh 52HM84 and I liked the Sony picture better. Mind you, the Tosh picture was pretty good, as was a Hitachi 60V500 next to the Tosh. The Sony was selling for $3999. They expect the 50" A10s in about 2 weeks' time. So I'll be waiting to see it then.
Shieze 2005-08-22, 11:46 AM The 84 model is last years model, and use a different chip then the 85 model. I would try and compare the Sony with the 85.
I kind of pulled a miracle at Future Shop. We got the 62HMX85 for ~$3700. This price includes tax and the stand.
Just bought the 52HMX85 from FS after long search and re-searches
Details
52HMX85 + Stand + Shipping + PSP 5Yrs + tax = 38000
Shipment expected tomorrow.

IPPI - that's a great deal! Is your stand an original Toshiba stand or someone else's? Also, did you try to price out a 52HMX85? Which FS did you go to?
Hope you enjoy your TV!
quentin0 2005-08-25, 05:10 PM I got the 52HM85 with matching stand for $2599+txs at FS. Futureshops cost on the 52HMX85 was ~$120 more.
henryhenry 2005-08-26, 10:29 AM well, now FINALLY after all these years, i can experience HD in my room instead of the show room, just brought a Tosh 46hmx85, still in the box, no picture yet, ha, gonna pick up a HD terminal from shaw later..i want to do this right, so pls help, i'm planning to use component cable (for the time being) to run both dvd player and the digital box, do i plug it to both colorstream HD 1 and 2 inputs? or should i experience to use HDMI-to-DVI cable to the shaw digital box? i've heard DVI is only for video..do i need another cable for so sound? i'm a newbee for all these tech stuff, any information will be greatly appreciated..and pls try not to convince me to get a new dvd player with the HDMI output in the near future.
daz-man 2005-08-26, 10:36 AM Check FS first for the HD box because they are down to $238.00 and last I heard Shaw was asking $399.99. Not sure if Shaw dropped their price as well.
henryhenry 2005-08-26, 11:06 AM is there any differences of where i get the box? shaw said they will give me credit for $100.00 if i bring back the old one dct2000, but shaw still need to activate?
Perchie 2005-08-26, 11:17 AM I purchased the 52hm85 for $2700 which includes the stand and free delivery at Future Shop - so they are negotiable. Also, Toshiba's website has been updated, saying the 52hm85 model has the HD4 chip.

i just went through a process of looking at boxes at shaw and they told me that they will NOT honor the fs promos
the fs low price on the hd box is basically 398 minus programming credits for what looks like a low price...but shaw told me very clearly that fs is offerring credits that shaw won't give you when you go to plug the box in...if shaw won't credit your bill you end up paying the same as if you bought from shaw
shaw gives only 1 promo on any digital box...they will give you programming credit on your very first box, whether hd or sd digital...after that no more credits
they will give you a $100 credit for any digital box that's part of their system, no matter where you bought it
all activations take place through shawi've heard DVI is only for video..do i need another cable for so sound? i'm a newbee for all these tech stuff, any information will be greatly appreciated..and pls try not to convince me to get a new dvd player with the HDMI output in the near future.
hdmi only matters if you are running your sound through your tv because it carries audio as well as video..a dvi to hdmi cable should work fine if you are plugging your audio from the shaw box into a receiver (ie. you would run a coax or optical audio cable from your shaw box to your receiver..obviously your sound for your tv would be controlled by your receiver) since there is only a dvi out on the shaw box if you don't want to use a receiver you can run standard red/white audio from your shaw box to your tv
hope this makes sense
let us know how the 52 looks with dvd's...i tried several dvd's on one at fs and they looked terrible, i think you need to use either 480i/p or upconvert to 720p which we didn't do (we used a sammy 850 upconverting to 1080i)
enjoy it!
:D I just purchased a 46HMX85 for $ 2,599.00 icluding tax and the macthing stand at Golden Electronics in Richmond Hill Ontario. They aran authorized dealer.
And just to let you no that the HM vs HMX yes it's the the X stands for cinema series and black colour but it boasts the new chip HD4 not HD2+ and had an additional HDMI input. There will be two additional models in Septmeber that will have display capabilities of 1080i. The HM and the HMX are similar but with respect to lamp life the HD4 has longer life span and various higher quality internal components plus added menu features.
Thank you very much for your tip, OShap.
I just paid $2,620 for my 46HMX85 at Golden Electronics. That included
TV+matching stand (assembled)+delivery to my basement+GST+PST.
JohnnyG 2005-08-26, 02:14 PM I just paid $2,620 for my 46HMX85...
I think that's about what I paid for my 46H83 CRT set not 2 years ago! Amazing, isn't it?!
Is the 52HM95 the same as the 52HM84 or the 52HM85? There are reviews of the HM95 in the May issues of Ultimate AV and Sound & Vision. Will the HM95 be coming to Canada? Maybe that's why FS is discounting the HM85s.

Have you considered the new Bell ExpressVu HD 9200 PVR? It has HDMI out.
The PVR 9200 does HD from satellite. Has a built in OTA HD tuner. Can record 2 satelitte programs plus an OTA broadcast all at the same time. Records 25 hours of HD or 180 hours of SD. Can feed two TV's. Comes with two remotes.
henryhenry 2005-08-27, 02:28 PM thanks for the infor, since i'm in the apartment, i won't be able to hook up the dish, oh well, i'll just have to deal with shaw , i've just been waiting too long for a widescreen tv and hdtv..i'm planning to hook up 2 component cable for my dvd and shaw hd box, and ran 2 optical cable for sound from my receiver. am i doing the right things?
kramer001 2005-08-27, 04:19 PM Does anyone run dishnet on the new hmx85 series?
I find my pq rather poor and was just watching a soccer game and the grass was very bright and one team had a purple sweater and you would see the colour bleed. My dealer already changed my set once as they said they had some problems with the first batch the received. Even some dvd's do not play very well. Anyone having similar problems?
Also, what is better for HD, EV or starchoice? I have been flip-flopping as which on to get.
Thanks

the 95 is the US model number
the 85 is the canadian
i am too lazy to check but i believe the 95 has the cable card technology which is required in the us plus it has a built in hdtv tuner
cable card is sort of being crapped on in the us and the built in tuner has limited usefulness (ie. if you live in a big city and have good line of sight to different broadcast signals)
other than that and maybe a few very small differences, they are basically the same set

jamal 2005-08-28, 12:55 AM I just bought a toshiba 52HMX85. I I hooked up my DVD player to the HD1 terminal using $80 cables that were recommended to be by the sales man.
My issue is that I am getting a bad picture - very blured and pixily. I hooked it up with a brand new toshiba DVD player and got lots of pixels and a red screen no colour. SO I switched it with my Panasonic DVD player (which is 3 months old) and I got colour but very pixily. I am feeling frustrated. I was looking for a crisp clean picture. I am sitting pretty close 7 feet but when I sit even further I still see the pixels. What should I do ???. Should I return it or keep at it. I have not got my HDTV box that is going to be sent to me in a couple of days.
