I don't profess to be an expert on the subject....but the proof is in the pudding...On-site comparisons between the newly announced Samsung and the HMX85 Series proved to me that the picture on the Toshiba is brighter, sharper and crisper than the Samsung or any other LCD for that matter....the HMX85 comes with 2 HDMI connections whereas the new Samsung has 1....but I don<t know if the HMX comes with a PC connection,,,anybody?
Anways....signed on the dotted line today for a 52HMX85 Black including stand for under $3,000.....this after weeks of intense research and numerous visits to stores for the human eye test.....Will take delivery next week...will let you know....thanks for any replies....

everytime i go into a shop that has the toshiba dlp's they always jump out at me and catch my eye, this is a very good way to decide on a tv

but since i wanted to save money i bought a new hitachi crt-rp which produces beautiful dvd material

but being concerned about burn-in i went to fs to reconsider the tosh where a very helpful and knowledgable guy plugged in an hdmi dvd (sammy 850) to a 52hmx84 and we looked at 4 different dvd's i brought

we couldn't get the right remote to get inside and do sharpness and contrast adjustments at all and had to give up eventually but all 4 dvd's looked very poor, really poor

are you people that are using your tosh dlp for dvd's happy with what your'e getting?

Have you actually seen the new Samsung HLR series yet? The 6168W is suppose to be very nice!! I was sold on The Toshiba but then I saw an older Samsung next to a Toshiba 46HM85 and the pictures were very comparable. I did take some DVDs to a store and tried them on the Toshiba and it is very nice but I think the Samsung might just be better. I'll have to wait to see the new models before I decide.

Hey daz-man...I did see the Samy5064 in store....and like I say, the pq seemed as good, if not better than the Tosh 50HMX85...but I have been assured by the store the Tosh runs an HD4 chip...it has 2 HDMI connections and I personally likeed the form factor (the looks) better than the Samy....I will be taking delivery of the Tosh this week....and although I"m happy about having chosen the Tosh....I"m still reading a lot about both...the Samy and the Tosh....that<s how close they are....according to me , anyways.

The Samy x64 series are a bad joke. They are x63 series insides with
the new x67/x68 outside. They may be 'new' and may look 'new' but
they are old HD2+ technology.

The x68 series (1080p) should start showing up in the next week or two
in Canada. The brick website said end of August for 6168. Then you can
compare a really NEW Samy.

The buzz on the x68 is fantastic picture but bad video lag and some questionable quality issues in the first off run.

HD2+ is superior to HD3. One major difference is that the HD3 has smaller mirrors, so the image has to be zoomed more, which, I believe, shows the gaps between the mirrors better (which is a negative thing).

So far, from what I've heard, HD4 appears to be superior to both HD2+ and HD3 in terms of overall picture quality. I believe this is largely due to improvements in the on-chip image processing.

I'm not 100% sure, but I thought all the new HM85's had the HD4 chip?

Does anyone know what chip the new 52HM85 has? The HD3 or the HD4?
How about the 52HM95? (US Model)?

Thanks for the help, you guys are so knowledgeable!

George D.....The 52HM(X)85 definitely has an HD4 Chip. (X) is for Black
The HM(X)95 comes with HiDef integrated...
My view on integrated HD is.....go with your Cable or Satelite companies HD Box.

RKH....thanks for that incite on the 5064...I could rest easy with my decision on the 52HMX85....which I will get delivered this coming week.
Also re: Sammy the x67 and x68....at what price....probably another $1500-$2000 over my Tosh HMX85....no ?

DazMan...I guess the answer is yes....my set is going in my basement 17'x24' and found the Sammy looking a little too compact for my liking....I think the Toshiba will look great in one of my corners....

I just got my 46HMX185 and so far I am a bit disappointed. Perhaps it is my set up but I am having a hard time getting a good picture with regular satellite. I did notice improvement when I hooked up component cables and dvd picture was good. But only dvd's which were newer and made to run on proper equipment. I put in Shrek and it was stunning. Lord of the Rings was nice but not great. I put in God Father and the pq was better on my 29" 10 year old crt. Way to grainy with the DLP.
I am sitting about 8 feet away which is close but I thjink you should not see a grainy picture or heavy reds either way.
I had this one dvd which showed a mountain backdrop and the edges of the mountain were very pixelated, lick squares. I put the dvd in another tv and the mountain edges were much smoother.

I am not running HD yet so can't comment on that but watching dishnet has been a bit disappointing. The picture is too cloudy. Certain colours look great but others can just drag the whole thing down.

Does anyone have any similar experience? Always looking to compare notes and share ideas...
Thanks

For me it will be between the Samsung 6168W and the Toshiba 62MX195 as they don't have speakers on the side.

The 185 or 195 are out?
Anyway if you are using a small dish don't expect any good SD at all. small dish has the worst SD I ever have seen, the HD is not great on small dish I heard it got better now, when I had small dish, and yes I tried them all, they all sucked even the HD, your dvd's should look good though, a Dragonfly http://www.algolith.com/index.php?id=dragonfly&L=0 maybe able to sharpen up the picture, on you pizza dish and even improve you HD when you get it, though the price is on the high side.

I am sitting about 7-8 feet as well and the 46" is more than enough and I moved up from a 29" When in full 16:9 mode, I think it is more than adequate and I am thinking of moving my room around just to get back a bit farther. I find you notice the grain too much as well when sitting so close, even when pq is at its best.

Anyone have the actual SCREEN dimensions(h/w) for the 46" and 52"? I was reading a few posts last night of people who were below 10 feet away from the Tv and regreted going too large with their TV(52"). I'm going back and forth on this--at 7-8 ft I'm thinking I may be too close for a 52", especially with SD/DVD. On the flip side I'm afraid that a 46" will be too close to my 32" 4:3 TV(it looks like they are about the same screen height) and won't have a big screen theater feel.

Decisions, decisions!

JASON

like what kind of proper equipment?

dvd quality varies a lot with newer/recent generally being better but not always....some old ones like 5th element are considered excellent

i wonder if the tosh needs to be calibrated out with certain inputs/settings or could it be very sensitive to certain players and equipment?

i tried heat (very dark scenes), 5th element (reference dvd quality) , last of the mohicans (average run of the mill newer dvd) and ghost in the darkness (non-anamorphic) and all looked much, much worse than my hitachi crt-rp

According to the Toshiba site, the 52hm85 has the hd2+ chip.

This is an error on their website, from copying the old bio for last years model. The xxHM85's and HMX85's all have the HD4 chip. This has been confirmed by Toshiba.

here are the specs for the TVs as per the toshiba site:

Notice the 46" only has 1 HDMI and one set of Audio IN jacks.
*EDIT* Seems like the 46" doesn't come with the Virtual Dolby Surround (VDS) either

The manual applies to the 52 and the 62" versions as stated in the manual.

I just purchased a 46HMX85 for $ 2,599.00 icluding tax and the macthing stand at Golden Electronics in Richmond Hill Ontario. They aran authorized dealer.

And just to let you no that the HM vs HMX yes it's the the X stands for cinema series and black colour but it boasts the new chip HD4 not HD2+ and had an additional HDMI input. There will be two additional models in Septmeber that will have display capabilities of 1080i. The HM and the HMX are similar but with respect to lamp life the HD4 has longer life span and various higher quality internal components plus added menu features.

As stated above, the HM series (ie, non "cimema series") has the HD4 chip also. You can clearly see it is NOT the HD2+ by looking close up at the screen, and seeing the tiny diamond pattern, indicating a wobbulated chip.
The only thing seperating the HM vs the HMX series are a black cabinet, slightly different remote, and extra HDMI input (and only the 52 and 62 HMX series have two HDMI's, the 46HMX has one). There is not any difference with regards to "higher quality internal components".

Guys..guys....I just took delivery of my 52HMX85...and it is majestic!! I love it ...it is sitting there in basement 17'x 24' and it is saying.....TURN ME ON!!!.
Let me just say I forked over close to $200 for the Monster cables and $250 for a Videotron HD Cable Box.....same as Rogers (Scientific Atlantic)....Stunnning absolutely Stunning...I watched a pre-season NFL game last night Jets and Vikes...on ABC HD.....FANTASTIC.....caught the ball game on Rogers Sports Net HD....amazing......not only do you get a 16x 9 view....you see more of the playing field....you can actually see the defensive secondary when they are lined up for the hike....so to put you mids at rest.....HD is SUPER...very clear...Plazma like.
Popped in a DVD....Fight Club....was not as impressed as the HD feed. A little grainy....but I guess I will have to experiment with some newer DVD's or others that have a brighter picture....Fight Club is a rather 'moot' movie.
As for regular cable....well it depends on the broadcast....some come in very nice others not so nice....but not to the point where you can't watch...Oh and I also caught Jay Leno in HD.....just like you are sitting live in the audience.....amazing picture.
So far the only 'con' I found was the Remote Control....I find it to be NOT USER FRIENDLY....in other words....the buttons you may use more often are not well placed.....that is all for now....I highly recommend it so far....
And just to let you know....although the box my TV came in read.....52HMX85...HD2+.......the Chip is definitely HD4.
