: Toshiba 46HMX85, 52HMX85, 62HMX85 in FS
Digital79 2005-07-29, 05:37 PM The HD4 and xHD4 models are the x95 models that are on the verge of shipping in the US.
The x85 models here in Canada are old HD2+ technology. This comes right from the Toshiba Canada website (http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en§ion=2&group=6&product=4772). There is no mention of x95 release in Canada on the website but I think it will happen eventually.
...
I just looked at the 46 and 52" x85 Toshiba sets.
The x85 is NOT using HD2+, the image has a clear diamond pattern from a wombled chip. It may be HD3 or HD4 but its not HD2+. HD2+ still looks better than any wombled chip to date, too bad Toshiba dropped it.
I thought the new Toshiba's (at least the CRT RPTVs) now offerred colour decoder parameters starting with the 84 series?
Is this not the case with the DLPs?

Michael TLV 2005-07-30, 12:10 AM Greetings
No color decoder parameters.

I received the following e-mail from Toshiba in response to my query on the 95's & 195's:
"Hello ,
Thank you for taking a moment to contact Toshiba customer support with
your inquiry.
If you are referring to the DLP TV's the 195 are not expected in until
Sept/Oct . You might want to check with us at that time
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to be of assistance.

They didn't mention anything about the 95s, but I guess they will be in about the same time. I guess I can wait 2-3 months before getting the new set.
MrC1ark 2005-07-30, 10:23 AM Anyone have the actual SCREEN dimensions(h/w) for the 46" and 52"? I was reading a few posts last night of people who were below 10 feet away from the Tv and regreted going too large with their TV(52"). I'm going back and forth on this--at 7-8 ft I'm thinking I may be too close for a 52", especially with SD/DVD. On the flip side I'm afraid that a 46" will be too close to my 32" 4:3 TV(it looks like they are about the same screen height) and won't have a big screen theater feel.
Decisions, decisions!

heybirder 2005-07-30, 01:29 PM A 46" widescreen should be about the same viewing size as a standard 36" TV in SD programming and almost 2x the viewing area on anamorphic video. So it's actually pretty big.
You can play with the numbers here: Compare TV Dimensions (http://www.cavecreations.com/tv2.cgi)

Height is 0.49 x diagonal
Width is 0.87 x diagonal
46" is 22.6" h by 40.0" w
52" is 25.5" h by 45.3" w
My rule of thumb for seating is 2 x screen diagonal so:
A 46" TV would be 92" i.e 7' 8"
A 52" TV would be 104" i.e. 8' 8"
It's personal choice in the end... Consider:
- Super large looks great for movies, but could be overwhelming for every day use.
- You can sit really close with HD (ie. larger screen), but SD tends to look worse the more you increase it's size.
I'd encourage you to go sit in the store at your actual viewing distance (take a tape measure) and watch the kind of programming you will watch at home. Then decide.

I disagree... the HD2+ image looks really sharp and crisp and well... digital !!
The world is not made up of 1280 x 720 dots... or any other comination of dots. We have to face it we live in a soft analog world... look around you... things are not sharp and crisp. The wobulated chips (or more accurately the diamond pattern) give a softer more natural image. Closer to the world we live in.

1. If Moderator is reading this, please let me know for my future references, why my previous thread from Persistent mofo was deleted. Thx
2. I BOUGHT MY 46HMX85 TODAY!!!!! so happy, should be getting it in a week. What a deal, I got it for $2,200!!!! and no, it is not the 44LG/Toshiba, its the real deal, brand new 46HMX85. My buddy who works at BB couldn't believe this deal and could not even come close to this price.
3. I haven't read many problems with the 46hmx85 on this site yet, but are there other owners of the 85 series having any problems with their TV's? Just want to check before my 30 days money back runs out.
THank you everyone for awesome info!!!!
VenomBrock 2005-07-31, 03:12 AM Can someone who has (at home) any of the HMX85 sets please verify for me that they still have 2 HDMI's? Someone on another forum had told me that they were stepped down to 1 HDMI from the HMX84's 2 HDMI's.
Also, I was looking at the box for a HMX85 in our warehouse today, and I could have sworn it listed the HM2+ chip. Perhaps I will have to triple check that one. But any verification on the HDMI situation is greatly appreciated.

I think it depends on which HMX85 set you are looking at. I know for the 46" it only has 1 HDMI whereas the other 2 bigger screens have 2 HDMI's.
VenomBrock 2005-07-31, 03:47 AM Yeah, I'm looking at the 52HMX85. Thanks for the response, I just wanted to really verify they hadn't downgraded to a single HDMI from last years model. Phew.

I have visually seen two HDMI on the 62HMX85. No visual on the 46 and 52 HMX, but it's my understanding one of the key differences between the HM and the HMX is that the latter has 2 HDMI. This includes the 46HMX85.
Once you have the 46HMX85 in your hands... perhaps you can confirm?

I cannot find the x85 sets outlined on the Toshiba web site. When will we see in writing that the HD2+ chip is not in those sets?

Wow what a deal where did you get it?
persistent mofo 2 2005-08-01, 01:22 AM Wow what a deal where did you get it?
Pretty much after hours of hangling @ A&Bsound, I got the 46HMX85 to $2,200.
I'm actually REALLY curious as to how many people talk the price down at these Electronic stores? I'm not sure if I really got a that great of deal as I'm not aware of their Mark Ups. But I was surprise the prices on the price tags were negotiable, I thought to give it a little nudge and the salesman went down $300 bucks after 15 minutes from $2,799. So, then I kept pushing until $2,200.
Anyways, good luck with your purchase. But I'm really interested to see other people's responses regarding their negotiating tactics, if any at all
VenomBrock 2005-08-01, 01:42 AM Woo, I can't wait to hear more impressions of the HMX85's. I'll be picking up my 52" very soon, with an awesome deal thanks to my staff discount:
- TV: Normal Price - $3399 CND, Staff Price - About $2650 CND
- Stand: Normal Price - $400 CND, Staff Price - About $5
- 5 Years PSP, Normal Price - $500 CND, Staff Price - Just Under $250 CND
I can't wait! As soon as I have 1/2 the money saved up (soon!), I'm pickin it up.

Toshiba CSR doesn't know when they will post HMX85's to the website. The only relevant link is this one for 62HM85. It shows a HD4+
The CSR assures me that the + is a typo since there's no such chip and it is infact a HD4. Yeah... I know... it doesn't fill me with confidence either.
