: Toshiba 46HMX85, 52HMX85, 62HMX85 in FS
Kdog044 2006-01-22, 11:03 AM [QUOTE=Kdog044]
Thanks for the clarification Kdog044. I have since read more information on the replacement bulb warranty and I kept meaning to amend my post!
I assume then that you had a bulb go within your 1 year original warranty. When did you purchase your set and when did the bulb blow on you?
Sorry I am late responding but I didn't see your post. Yes, my lamp went after 9 months but I had 3000 hours on it (got to love having kids). I used my AMEX to purchase my set so I actually have a two year warranty. I ended up buying a lamp because Toshiba couldn't give me a ship date on the replacement. Two weeks later I received my replacement and now it sits on a shelf as a spare. I know some people don't understand purchasing a spare due to potentially losing the warranty period but with the use I get on my TV I think the warranty would expire before I would be able to use it anyway and in five minutes my TV is back and running.
pbeckman 2006-01-24, 08:35 PM I've spent months researching different RP TVs, and finally am prepared to go out buy the 52HMX85. Low and behold, FS is backordered with no ETA on replacement stock, the 46 model has been discontinued...
Leads me to wonder if something new is coming down the pipe from Toshiba, to replace the Cinema models.... any ideas?

I am wondering the same thing.
I spent a significant amout of time researching and deciding on my TV of choice (and this site has been more than helpful).
I made a "Layaway Deposit" at FS today for the 52HMX85. There are 10 more units coming to the GTA, and here's hoping it doesn't take forever to come in, as I would love to get this TV in my living room ASAP.
I plan on taking my Layaway reciept to Best Buy to see if they will beat the price FS gave me, and perhaps they have some in stock somewhere.
I "deposited" $3818 including tax for the 52HMX85, stand, delivery, 3 year product plan. Also got some free 12 month HD Rogers hookup bonus (current freebie bonus at FS with all HDTVs).
Fisherguy 2006-01-24, 10:48 PM I have noticed the video seems to lag a little at times when watching a DVD. My receiver has the ability to delay the sound I think, but haven't tried fiddling with it yet, it is kind of annoying though...

well is your video lagging or is the sound lagging (caused by the receiver)?,It can't be both. I have found certain tv stations cause a lag in sound, and the occasional time, while watching a movie, the sound will go slightly out of sync. I think the lag while watching tv will be corrected when I (finally) get connected to digital cable/satellite and the DVD sound sync problem will be corrected when I can get a better HDMI cable or different sound hook up.
I have the DVD player hooked up to the TV by a cheap HDMI cable that came with my DVD player. Then to hook up my home theater, I connected the receiver to the tv by means of an optical cable to give me sound throught the surround speakers. (Maybe I should connect the reciever directly to the receiver, but how?...humm). That means I have 2 sound hook ups in my system, any other suggestions on how to connect the sound. BTW, i have a Harmon Kardon AVR 230, a Samsung up converting DVD player and the 62HMX85.

Like I said, my video is a little behind my audio at times. With my Denon receiver I can delay the audio to be in sync with the video but haven't tried it yet, no one else in our house seems to notice it. I've read others complaining of this, especially with Samsung TV's, something to do with the amount of video signal processing with the DLP system¿
My 9200 is connected to the TV by the HDMI cable it came with, looks to be a good heavy one, the audio from the dish goes from the TV to the receiver using RCA plugs for now, (it will go direct by fibre to the receiver once I get my stand figured out).
My DVD is also hooked up by a good quality HDMI cable to the TV, the audio is a fibre direct to the receiver. I've got good quality cables to go from the 5.1 output of the DVD to the receiver and will hook them up once I find a stand.
The TV's about 6 weeks old, from what I'm reading I wonder if I should order a spare bulb? :o

i thought of the same but then thought i would have to pay for it. It I wait until the bulb blows (while it is covered under warranty) then I will get a new one for free. However, once my warranty is over, I will then buy a spare bulb and wait for the inevitable.

First let me say thanks to all for the great info on this site. It helped me make my final decision, (beleive me that's not easy for me) I also spent 6 months researching, discussing moving from DLP to plasma to LCOS back to DLP and once I saw the Tosh I made my mind up. Likewise I bought the 46HMX85 @ FS (for a wicked price I thought) on Layaway only because they said they had to order more, that was Jan 2nd. When I came back from mexico a week later they tell me it's discontinued. So far no resolve. I don't want my money back, I want the Tosh. Now it looks like the 52" isn't even avail. What should I do?

Depends on where you live. I see the 52HMX85 all over Calgary at FS, Visions, Soundsaround, London Drugs and the 52HM85 at Bestbuy. I'm guessing you are in GTA, but they should be around.
My guess is the MX195 series will be all over in the next few months to replace the HMX85. I was thinking this was my fall back set if cost became an issue and I dont need 1080P, but I hear a lot of guys on this site having lamp replacement issues and I dont want to be spending $600 a year on lamps.
I'm waiting to see a JVC Lcos set and save some $$ up for one of those.
pbeckman 2006-01-29, 08:27 PM I was browsing the Toshiba US website, and on Jan. 4, they posted a Product announcement for the 50HM66 (due April 2006); 56HM66 (due May 2006). I wonder when they'll make it to Canada.

Jimberfly 2006-02-01, 01:56 AM Try A&B Sound. I hammered them down to $2400 for the TV. (52HMX85)
I skipped the stand, and with a 6 year warranty (that you get if you pay by American Express for some reason), an HDMI cable and taxes came to $2950.
Even visions was willing to go $2400.
Chinigla 2006-02-03, 05:39 PM Just a question. I have been looking at purchasing the 52HMX85. I have read the postings and have to say the bulb issue worries me. How difficult is it to change the bulb yourself? Is it something that can be done or do you have to take the TV in or have a service person come out?
Fisherguy 2006-02-04, 02:19 AM I haven't had to do it yet but from what I'm reading in the manual, you open a little door on the side of the TV and pull a handle, the bulb is in like a cage that slides out, the new one slides in, seems pretty simple.
g011um 2006-02-05, 11:07 AM Went into FutureShop to have a look at the Sony SXRD -- just to see what all the fuss was about :) They didn't have any on display (dude said they were a bit pricey for our market; hard to disagree) but they did have a very nice looking 52HM85 that my wife and I were quite impressed with. And it's on sale for $2299, so that's right in line with what we were thinking about spending.
The guy we spoke to was very nice, reasonably knowledgeable, and seemed like he was willing to deal a bit. I think I'll try and get him to give me the HMX for that price, although it's not on sale so I don't know if he'll do it.
I have a question about the extended warranty. If it doesn't cover the bulb (like many here have said) is it worth it? I know alot of people here have bought it (yes, I did read ALL 29 pages of this thread!) and some of you must have had your TVs for at least 4 or 5 months now. Any problems (other than perhaps short bulb life)?
Any thought on the Hitachi VF820 models? That was the other one we say that looked pretty good. Haven't done much research on them yet.
Many thanks!

If you like the 52HM85, maybe look at the HMX85. That is what I was thinking of for the extra HDMI input and I like the black cabinet. I am personally a bit scared of all the lamp replacement problems I am hearing with this Toshiba DLP and am going to stay away.
I saw a hitachi 50vg825 and thought it looked great, except for the screen door effect which I cant stand from LCDRP, but otherwise would go for it. A friend of mine has had the 50" hitachi he got last year and loves it.
I like Lcos and think the SDRD is a great looking pic, still waiting to see a JVC 1080P Dila because I like black over silver.
NickL 2006-02-06, 03:12 PM I was fairly close to choosing the HM85 over a plasma due to price but wasn't sold on the pic/technology. I loved the HMX85 but of course it's closer to $3000 + accessories. Then I see the 195 with 1080p and think it's prob the way to go but then it's closer to $4000+......and now I'm virtually back into Panasonic plasma territory. And when you add in bulb replacements, I'm probably right in plasma price range shortly.
Any opinions ot thoughts......or plain old HELP!!!

I saw the Panny plasma in FS and if I wanted 50", that is what I would buy. Great depth of picture and colour...it was setup across from the Sony sxrd and hands down I liked the pic better.
I want to get 61", so am going for projection of some form and seriously looking at LCOS but was thinking 60" lcos is similar price to 50" plasma.
NickL 2006-02-06, 11:11 PM It seems like the following are consistent problems with these Toshiba sets and prob DLPs in general:
1. bulbs blowing and getting replacements
2. warranty coverage or lack thereof for the bulbs
3. SD programs are the best PQ (prob the same with most HD sets?)
4. viewing angles are limited
5. actual chip being used confusion
6. 1080p prices approaching plasmas

Just remember it will be years before most of all the tv stations are broadcast in 1080p. Think of how few (compared to the hundreds of channels that are currently availabe) are currently broadcast in High Def. Plus, most times the picture in 720i is better than 1080p because of the difference in 'interlace' and 'progressive'. It is all a big price trade off. If you whant a TV now, go buy it, if you want to wait, well....wait. The good thing about waiting is not to get the new product but to get the 'old' product, for a big discount, when the new one comes out.
It is all personal preference..I think my 62hmx85 will do fine until the new 1080's prove themselves (5-7 years) and the programming gets easier/cheaper to obtain. Then I will sell it for what I can and upgrade.
I have had mine since October and it has spent more time 'on' than 'off'! Still the PQ is just as bright as the day I plugged it in. I also have no complaints on viewing angles or fan noise. However the noise from the remote when the light is on, I will admit, is a bit annoying :(

my thoughts regarding the above:
1. I have not had to do it yet but a reputable home theater store should be better than a FS type of store.
2. I agree, the warranty here should be at lease 2-3 years.
3. ???? not sure if I agree that standard def are the best on this set but remember, it is designed for HD signals and not the average SD signal. If you only have SD and want a big screen, CRTs are so much better (and cheaper) than these LCDs for displaying non HD content.
4. I have no complaits at all regarding viewing angles.
5. who cares about what chip is in it. If you like the picture quality, does it matter what chip it has?
6. Plasmas, Shasmas!. I am not too inpressed with the price/value/ non renewable life of a plasma. Once the color starts to fade, there is no renewing it! Only soultion will be buying a new set!
