: Toshiba 46HMX85, 52HMX85, 62HMX85 in FS
kbennett 2006-01-13, 11:08 AM I find sync problem can be traced to processing at the tv of video. On DVD try different up converts to see if that helps. Check your settings and turn off stuff that might be taking processing time. Everything needs to be changed to 720p digital at the tv so anything you can do to make that easier should help.
How can I ensure the TV is set to 720P? The DVD player is simple to set to 720P but the TV is another story.
morguester 2006-01-13, 12:21 PM By default everything is scaled to 720p. If you're using HDMI you just need to set your source (DVD player/STB) to 720p and you're good to go.
The same applies to component inputs.
morguester 2006-01-13, 12:25 PM I have noticed sync issues from time to time on the W Network (wife loves that station ;) )
It can happen if their repeaters get a lag or improper impedence. 75ohm coax going into 80ohm will cause mild reflections and the like.
I'm sure the issue is Rogers and not the set as I've seen this phenomenom with my Toshiba 20" CRT and my old JVC 32" CRT. Does it happen with the digital channels too or just the basic analogue cable?
kramer001 2006-01-15, 03:16 PM I was just in the middle of watching football when I heard a loud pop from the tv. I still get sound but no picture. The tv keeps going on and off. The red light comes on for about 10 seconds then a flashing green light for a few seconds then tv goes off and this cycle continues. TV is no more than 5 months old. Is this a blown bulb? Or am I looking at something worse here?
Thanks
kramer001 2006-01-15, 03:48 PM Well I got curious and pulled out the lamp and it is blown.
Does standard warranty cover the lamps? Only 5 months old.

Yes, your bulb is under warranty for 1 year, through Toshiba.
kbennett 2006-01-16, 09:35 AM i don't think a blown bulb is covered after 3 months. I could be wrong but I would be suprised Toshiba would cover it. I was told that 3 months is the limit, even if an extended warrenty was purchased. However the reputable store that I bought mine would cover it for a year. Up to 3 months, Toshiba would foot the bill.
As for the sync problem, I have noticed it the most on the Weather Network too!. I can't try it on digital channels because I am only on standard cable until i get my house built, then goin HD all the way. Can we do anything about this? ie, better coax cable, etc?

kbennett and kramer,
Yes, your original bulb is covered for 1 full year by Toshiba, see your user manual, it is specifically stated there. If you get a replacement bulb, it is covered for 3 months by Toshiba. So, Kramer, as long as this is the original bulb, you are covered. Call them ASAP!!
pbyford 2006-01-16, 05:16 PM I have been looking for some time now and I am ready to buy the Toshiba 52HMX85. the best price I could find is at CompuSmart for $2499 ($500 rebate until January 31st.)
Anyone know of a better deal??
Cheers
03eunos 2006-01-18, 12:04 PM I just want to mention that while this is my first post on this forum, I've been lurking in the shadows for some time and have come across some very beneficial information from other forum users and I would like to say thanks!
I used that information to purchase the 46HMX85 from Future Shop during the Boxing week sale and the television arrived in Newfoundland today. I just accessed the FS website and I don't see the television listed anymore and am curious to know if it has been discontinued by Toshiba or just not available at FS anymore. I know there has been lots of discussion about the larger models in the series having 2 HDMI, a better remote, an upgraded sound system and a small price difference compared to the 46 inch model, but I really like the size and look of the 46 and think it would still be a viable option for many buyers based on its smaller size.
I see that the stand for the 46 inch model is still available at FS for $249.99 and was wondering if these might be cleared out at a good discount if FS will no longer be selling the television. Just wondering if any FS insiders or other users may have some comments or information.
Thanks again and I look forward to continued participation in this forum!

03eunos 2006-01-18, 12:29 PM I'm hoping to pick my 46HMX85 up tomorrow after work from Household Movers (contract carrier for Future Shop to Newfoundland). Does anyone have suggestions as to a checklist for shipping damage besides what can be physically seen? I'm going to let the unit stand overnight to eliminate condensation issues, but wondering if there are any hidden issues not covered in the owner's manual.
I've been reading as much as possible on calibration topics, but am still not sure what I should immediately do to improve PQ. While I plan to search this site for specifics, I was wondering if anyone has any quick or compulsory setup changes that I should make.
Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks for the clarification Kdog044. I have since read more information on the replacement bulb warranty and I kept meaning to amend my post!
I assume then that you had a bulb go within your 1 year original warranty. When did you purchase your set and when did the bulb blow on you?
profligate 2006-01-19, 03:17 AM I just received my new 52HMX85 today from FS. Got it in the door, hooked up the HD receiver, turned on the set and........
There are a series of black marks that almost look like fingerprints in a band across the middle of the screen. I tried wiping the screen down with a soft, damp, warm cloth....no avail. it almost looks like they are marks on the inside of the screen. Any suggestions besides calling FS...because I've already done that to complain about the delivery issues and I'm waiting for a call from the manager of the home theatre department.

Exactly why I would not trust FS for a purchase like this. I used them to get a good (great) price and then went straight to my local Home Theater store where they were happy to beat the price by a $100 AND give me a 5 year warranty instead of the 3 year that FS included in their price. Plus, I don't like the idea of a moving company bringing my new TV. If something goes wrong like it was dropped (but not damaged in the truck), how would you prove that the poor PQ was caused by the movers? The moving company will never come back to service your set, and FS is known for bad customer relations.
03eunos 2006-01-19, 10:51 AM I have the same concerns with movers. I was a little concerned about North American Van Lines bringing my television in from Ontario, but then got to thinking that these TV's are not Canadian made and probably have to be shipped 1-2 months across the rough Atlantic Ocean in a container to the nearest port and then trucked to a central warehouse... Every step of the way is a possible opportunity for damage to occur and I don't think it matters if the television ultimately ends up at a local dealer or a national chain store such as Future Shop. I do agree with you about getting better service from a "Mom and Pop" local dealer store.
I was curious if your television was a demo or a new unit unopened in its box? I'm going to have a real close look at mine this weekend and will let you know if I have the same issue.
Good luck!
profligate 2006-01-19, 03:45 PM Mine was a new unit, in the original box and packaging. And unless Future Shop manages to satisfy my complaints, both about the unit itself as well as the ordeal I had to go through to get it delivered, then this will be the last thing I purchase from them, except for movies and games.

while it is true that these TVs are shipped great distances, FS is not the last ones to 'touch' the TV while bringing it into your home. Whereas if you buy it from a local company that delivers it, they can not pass blame off to someone else for the damage caused in transit!
In my mind, if a company can not deliver the goods, only make a profit by selling it, why buy it from them? Go to a 'real' store that specializes in the item that you are buying and most times you will get it cheaper, sevice is better AND chances are you will not buy a $4000 TV from some 18 year old kid trying to finance his way through college!
Sorry if I offend anyone but I don't have much use for FS! As you can probably tell :-)
There seems to be some discrepancy with the terms of bulb warranty. To add some new information, I talked with Toshiba Canada two days ago, because my bulb had blown after only three months. Since I was hovering right around the warranty period for bulb replacement as told by my audio/video dealer, I decided to phone Toshiba. The customer service representative told me there is indeed a one year bulb replacement warranty by Toshiba. So, even if your store says they do not cover the bulb after whatever length of time, you will still be covered. Although, it took a week to get the bulb. Be forewarned, my 52HMX85 picture was quite noticeably dimmer for two days before it blew, as I've noticed other people experiencing in this forum.
Craig_P 2006-01-21, 11:20 PM Same thing just happened to me. Bulb blew. 52HM85. Bought the TV in August. I noticed the pic growing dimmer and feared this would happen. The Bulb had 1100 hours on it. I am not a happy camper. This is far less than the 6000-8000 hours promised, and I babied the TV with respect to on/off cycling, and always used it in low lamp mode. This seems to be quite a problem with either these TV's, or the type of bulbs they use. Either way, it is a problem that needs to be addressed.
