: Toshiba 46HMX85, 52HMX85, 62HMX85 in FS
I don't like the idea of a receiver being so close to the floor with dust and my 2yr old daughter
Never mind about the dust & your 2 year old daughter messing with the reciever, I would be more worried that my girl might thinks its a giant chalk board or a huge etch a sketch LOL
W.O.T. 2005-12-13, 03:37 PM Picked up my 52hmx85 this morning. I ended up getting the TV, stand, warranty, all the upgraded cables, HD sat, and delivery for 3400 and change.
kilgar3 2005-12-13, 11:57 PM Looking at picking up the 52hmx85, but I am wondering if people are still having troubles with using the TV as a PC monitor. Or are there still issues with 1:1 mapping, have new drivers been released, or any workarounds?
WilJP 2005-12-14, 01:32 AM Can't speak for the 52HMX but I do have the 46HMX and the mapping is not 1:1 on 1280x720 in my case (ATI 9700P via DVI>HDMI, Cats 5.11/12). My actual overscan-free res seems to be around 1232x692 and looks fantastic.
The only issue I have is the HDCP handshake timeout when I change inputs or channels on the TV. Suspending and re-waking the PC is one way of getting around this problem though.

This is one of the reasons my gut feeling told me to go with the 34" XBR and wait with the bigscreen until I move into a house. But my heart wanted a bigscreen and usually with audio/video equipment my heart wins.:D
netvision 2005-12-16, 02:48 PM Has anyone had problems with the shelves of the 52HMX85 stand not being big enough to mount your receiver? The shelves seem quite shallow, I don't think the Denon receiver I've been looking at will fit.
...or do most people have a seperate stand for their components?
Thanks
Will
I had originally opted for the matching stand but cancelled the order and when with that could accomodate the tv (52HMX85) and of AV equipment especially the Pioneer TSX-1015 which is one large monster. I did some searching around and came across the Studio Tech HF-33 (comes all black or black & Silver) here is a link to what it looks like http://www.studiotech.com/products/plasma_tv_stands/high_fidelity_hf-33/index.html
inder19 2005-12-17, 02:59 AM Hi Im looking to purchase a tv and out of all the sites i have visited this one seems the most reliable. I am looking for a 50"-60"tv. I was ready to buy the Samsung 5064 but then i saw a toshiba 52hmx85 and liked the picture better. I still like the slim design of the samsung but then the salesperson was like "are you going to be watching the picture more or the sleekness of your tv" and i suppose its true, but size is some what of an issue. Now i can not decide between the 52hmx85 and the 62hmx85. The 52hmx85 would be about $2250can 62hmx85 would be $2945can. Is it worth the extra $700 for the extra 10". Currently the tv can be put in 1 of 2 rooms so viewing distance isnt an issue. Also I would be using it for xbox-360 does anyone have any experience with that?
In order of use i would use the tv for
Movies
Sports
Video Games
If anyone for any reason thinks i should look into a different tv please let me know.
Also is the stand worth it, i have heard of size of shelf issue but i like the look.

I say, the bigger the better. If money and viewing distance isn't an issue you'll really love the 'big screen' effect of the 62". My parents recently purchased the 62HM95 and man is it a beast. But where they have it placed, it works well and viewing distance is appropriate. However, for us 52" is just right and 62" would have been too big for our family room.
For SD programming however, you will notice more imperfections on the 62" as it brings them out more clearly. If you can sit back approximately 10' or more then that shouldn't be a problem IMO.

CalgaryCowboy 2005-12-18, 05:12 PM I was going to buy the 62 but now have decided on the 52. From the same distance the 62 is bigger but if you have to get farther away the size is the same (it is relative). As stated sd will look better from the same disance on the 52 and we will still have sd for a while. What really convinced me was seeing the 62 1080 x195. At the same distance it looked better than the 52 but not much but much better than the 62. It is out of my price range but if you are going that big 1080 is the way to go. I was going to go 10-12 ft out but now think on going 8ish or where ever it looks good and still have the theater experience.
kramer001 2005-12-19, 08:32 PM Has any bought a upconverting dvd player along with the hmx85 series?
I have the 46hmx and while newer movies like star wars and shrek are awesome, some of my old movies made in the 80's are not very good. Just wondering how much of a difference a upconverting dvd player makes.
I was going to hold out for the new blue ray or HD players but how will they play the older movies unless they are upconverting as well.
Thanks

Upconverting players can only do so much for poor quality transfers. I'm using ffdshow to denoise, sharpen and resize my DVDs and it looks better than my upconverting LG DVD player. However, it still can't do anything for poor quality transfers, so I would expect the same from a standalone player.

I have purchased the Panasonic S77 with my set and it does do a better job of upconverting... smoother.. cleaner image. However, there is an issue of macroblocking that I have to deal with the Faroudja chipset. (As utilized by this unit and the Oppo).
I would also take a look at the Sony upconverting model to see how it handles macroblocking, but in PQ I don't think it will hang with the Panny or Oppo.
No point in waiting for HD or BluRay players just yet, unless you want to pay an arm and a leg for them and deal with the bugs that first models of new technologies have. Which I'm sure they will have, like being backward compatible with old DVD's and not working correctly on some HD sets via HDMI/DVI, etc. I've heard that BluRay players won't be backward compatible due to the technology behind it.. but HD DVD players will be backward compatible. Not sure if this is still true, but that's what I've heard.

That looks like a great stand, could you email me a pic of what it looks like with your TV on it? I like that there's three "bays" for equipment per shelf cuz I really don't have room for a seperate rack, plus I'd need all lomger cables.
Got it all home Saturday, wired ip up and watched "The Island", it was awesome! :p
Unfortunately, Bell won't be out till the 27th to do the 9220 install! :(

Where do you think you can get the pricing? BB has the 62hm85 no "x" for $2999 this week. I live in Calgary but maybe I can get price match.
inder19 2005-12-21, 02:26 AM I decided to get the 62mx195 over the 62hmx85. When i saw the picture difference i couldnt resist, and also the slimmer design really helps because im planning on getting the klipsch r-35 surround package or something similar perhaps infinity. I went over budget by $1000 but im using the 3 months 0% interest and $0 adminstration fees from london drugs. including the stand and taxes it was about 4500. I should recieve it first week of january or second week. I was looking for a dvd player does anyone have any ideas. I was thinking the Panasonic s77. Also does anyone know if shaw offers any good deals with the HD DCT 6200.
Fisherguy 2005-12-22, 12:47 AM Has anyone tried the shelf ontop of the Toshiba for the center speaker?
MediaRoomManiac 2005-12-22, 04:42 PM Has anyone tried the shelf ontop of the Toshiba for the center speaker?
I wouldn't suggest it unless you have one of those skinny center channels like the ones you get with HTIBs or something like that. The top of the TV is just too thin and not strong enough to place anything with reasonable size and weight to them.
I've seen some people build center channel stands ie. wall brackets that can support heavy center channels. Easy DIY materials can be purchased from Home Depot like the brackets used to put up wood for making shelves.
Fisherguy 2005-12-22, 05:02 PM Yah, I'm thinking if I want to have room for the Denon, the C370, 2 DVD players and the BEV9200 I'll be looking at a 60" stand, don't have room for a seperate rack.
Was thinking of this one:
http://www.racksandstands.com/Wood-Technology-MGV-63-and-TR-63-C-WT0126.html
Don't really want to wall mount the speaker, I think that would be good for a wall mounted plasma but would look kinda weird being behind the DLP...

That's a real nice stand. I like the fact it has an integrated cable plate to help conceal the wires. Otherwise with the components exposed like that it would look like hell.
Fisherguy 2005-12-22, 07:02 PM That's not a good picture, the one at the Wood Technology website shows the plate on the back.
