Thank you very much, grider.
Probably, I need to consider to by a 46 one and save some $ for a surround sound system. Who has any suggestions for this TV? I am a layman. Thanks.

anyone having problems with this TV? I purchased a 46HMX85 back in Sept and the first one died on me after one month. The screen kept getting dimmer and dimmer then eventually no image. I got a replacement and the same thing happened after 2 months. I'm so pissed.

Howdie ShyGuy,

I had the same problem.Bought the 46 in September, after 2 months after noticing the screen get a little dimmer, the bulb popped (died). I have been down for a week, and I got the call from A&B and was told they talked to Toshiba and told me to drop off the old tv and pick up a new one. I just did that today.. your post makes me worry... can I ask what happened??? Did you get a third replacement?? Anyone else have this happen???

Well it's basically as you explained. It got dimmer and dimmer, then made a pop sound and it died. I purchased it from futureshop and they are just gonna let me refund the TV. I'm not gonna get another replacement Toshiba as it seems to be pretty unreliable. Instead, I'll probably go with a Samsung 42" HDTV Plasma.

I did talk to Toshiba on the phone and they mentioned that early batches of the TV's might have problems with the bulb and assured me that the replacement bulb would be fine, however I'm not going to risk it.

Hmmm that really sucks you had that problem. I can relate for sure. I am hoping this replacement works..one big pain in the ass to deal with this. I don;t find too many other people having this problem.. oh well good luck with the new TV.

I like to throw my 2 cents in, one night, the bulb just went during a lightning storm, is it my surge protector or just the bulb.?.the TV did came back on, but grew dimmer and dimmer as each night go by until it is unwatchable, call Toshiba and they refer me to a Vancouver authorized dealer, yada yada and you know what, he came by the same night(house call) and bring along the replacement bulb and in one trip, everything is DONE, I was so impressed about his service, he told me some bulbs was trucked from Mexico , some shaking and rolling may contribute to the problem, I may never know the reason but the problem was solved in a jiffy. I've brought the 46HMX85 since Aug, and I have nothing but praise about this TV, I know is frustrated about the bulb, but hey it could be worst if somebody give you the run around,
I lived in Vancouver area, if someone having the same problem with the bulb, or any matter with Toshiba, let me know, I'll refer this service center..now just in time to watch TSNHD from Shaw, I've brought a new surge protector just the same.

Not sure what kind of suggestions you are looking for? You need to be more specific.

When buying your TV, one of the first decisions is how big should the screen be. A screen size of 52 has a diagonal screen size of 52" from top left of screen to bottom right of screen. You will choose your screen size based on how far back you are. My rule of thumb is 2 x screen size. So for a 50" screen your viewing distance should be about 100" away. If you sit to close you will start to see some of the pixels that make up the picture (called SDE) and reduce the image quality.

Best way to decide is to go look at a few different TV's from the distance you will watch them at home. Make sure to crouch down so your eyes are at mid screen height (try it, this makes a huge difference). Pick the TV your eyes tell you is the best.

These Toshiba DLP TV's are very good. You should also look at the Sony A10 series LCD rear projection TV's which are on sale now. Look in the Sony forum on this site.

Is the rule of thumb for HD or SD??

I'm trying to decide on whether to go 56HM195, 62MX195, 62HMX85 or look at LCD projection in 62". I read somewhere that DLP is better than LCD for sports....is that true?

I'm looking at the 44HM85 for my room as I don't have a lot of room and my viewing distance is less than 8". Is this a rebadged LG? From the LG site, it states that it uses the HD3 chip, where as info from this thread and the toshiba site indicates it uses the HD4 chip.

I looked at LondonDrugs website where it says HD4, as I spoke with one of the Electronics managers there and he said it was LG, instead he steered me to the 52 and 62 hmx85 as being Toshiba.

BTW, he is a Toshiba DLP owner waiting to see the 195 series at store level. He went to the vendor show LD had in Whistler and said the SXRD Sony was amazing, but he was impressed by the Toshiba and Samsung DLP.

I am not certain what to purchase of the two 52hmx95 or the 46hmx.. Why doesnt the 46hmx not show up on toshiba's website on their product list? Whats the real difference between the two. The bulbs the same? I know the 46 only has one hdmi anything else different. I guess it comes down to size difference if they are both going to give the same pic qualty. Anyone advice or wisdom?

Stay away from the 44", it is a LG model just like last years model (The 44hm84). Don't know why Toshiba relies on LG for the 44" models...

I concur with that LD manager, the 52/62 HMX85 are the best choice among the Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, etc. rear-projections in that price range.

And while the Sony SXRD are the best rear projections (under 7k) right now, for the money I am picking me up a 1080P Toshiba 62MX195.

However, I told my friends if you are looking for best "Bang for the buck" pickup a Tosh 52/62 HMX series (yes the cinema series is worth the extra $300 for the extra HDMI connection as well as the sleek looking case. Really, it's the best looking DLP/LCD projection out there and even looks MUCH slicker than the TV I Am buying).

I've spent DAYS reading up and seeing all these TV's in person, and among the rear projections Toshiba has the best models (although if you are willing to pay the hundreds of dollars to get your TV ICSF calibrated I'd say the Samsung DLP's are a little better but ONLY if you get it ICSF calibrated. Plus, Samsungs have other little niggling issues I don't like...).

Yeesh, someone I know spend 4K on the Sony XBR LCD Bravia. I mean even the 46HMX85 ($2500) just BLOWS it away on DVD And HD in terms of picture quality but some people gotta have flat I geuss...

So I just picked up a 46HMX at Visons in Langely for $2250 without a stand and a 36 month payment plan - I figured its a good deal.

I was trying to setup the sound and it wouldn't switch from Mono.

I know the 46HMX doesn't come with Dolby Digital but I figured I should be able to at least switch it to stereo?

2 x diagonal is a reasonable compromise for most people who watch a mix of SD and HD. If you watch all HD you could go to 1.5 x and if you watch all SD you may want to go 2.5 x

With HD don't sit too close because you're eyes will tire as you move them back and forth to see the whole image (eg. imagine how much your eyes would move if you were only 12" away). With SD, sitting a little further back shows fewer imperfections.

I read somewhere that DLP is better than LCD for sports....is that true?
With LCD screens you will get something called lag where it takes a few milliseconds for each individual pixel to respond. In a fast moving sport this can cause a blur. DLP technology minimizes lag.

Thanks!! I was getting scared that 62" was too big as I expect to be anywhere from 10' to12' away from the set and was thinking 56" was the way to go, but I think I'll be OK with a 62". Thanks for the lag info as well, expect to watch tons of football and hockey.

I think I'm narrowing down to 62HMX85 or 62mx195. The 56hm195 looks nice but with the 62 right next to it on the floor it's hard to resist the larger set.

So the 44HM85 is HD4 and the LG equivalent is HD3? The reason I like that model is due to its size, the speakers at the bottom save me some space, plus its cheaper than the hmx series.

62" should work well from that distance.

One difference you may not have thought about between the 62HMX85 and the 62MX195 is where the speakers are mounted. They'e on the side on the HMX85 and on the bottom on the MX195. This makes the HMX85 overall cabinet about 10" to 12" wider than the MX195 for the same 62" screen size.

One other point... these TV's look MUCH bigger in your home than they do in the store. You'll see what I mean when you get it home. Good luck.

Thanks again.!! I took the speaker location into account and it will fit like a glove into my basement rec room wall unit with 2-3 " on either side and 10" on top for some shelves. The 195 will leave a bit more of a gap on the sides.

I'll wait to see them both, but read an article that was posted on this site that described the differences to the average video enthusiast as slight between 720P and 1080P. This will be my first Big Screen and I am leaning towards the 62HMX85 for combo of price, size and inputs.

I never like buying new models in the first year of production, cars appliances, etc. I normally like to wait until something is proven for a couple years, so this might also suit my buying behaviours....I can wait a few years for 1080P.........maybe.

you can't go wrong with the HMX series, I also have been waiting a while for my first big (wide) screen and I'm glad I take the plunge, 720p is perfect for now, remember there is not much 1080p broadcast out there, my thumb of rules is when the time is right, do it. case in point, I have wait for a long time for enough HD broadcast before I plunge into the HDTV arena. one final note: I personally really like the 'wingtip' speaker on the hmx, with just a small ambient light in the background in a darkened room, really give the illusion of wide screen theater. To each his own, I guess, ENJOY.

Hey folks,

Quick question ... I have the 62HMX85 and I recently purchased an HDMI to DVI-D cable. I hooked it up on the weekend to HDMI 1 and to my BEV 6100. I get a picture, but no sound? Anyone experience this problem? I checked my set up menu to see if there was something I had to change, but can't seem to find anything.

That is because DVI only carries video and no audio. A true HDMI to HDMI will do both.
