After months of research and reviewing the Digital Forum - finally purchased the Toshiba 46HMX85. I had narrowed it down to either the Sony KDFE50A10 or the 52HMX85. The 2 were side by side in the store - the overall Toshiba picture looked better then the Sony to my eyes. Many times in this forum, members have said that the big screen tvs look big on the sales floor but when getting them home - they look huge! Since our room measures approx 14 ft. wide and my viewing distance is 8 ft. - decided to go with the 46 in. screen size. Also the manager at Visions gave me a crazy deal that I couldn't refuse. $2400 for the 46HMX85 and three in the Toshiba stand for free.

Judy from what I read in your posts, I think you will enjoy the 46HMX. The stand was easy to build and took 2 people to put the tv on it. It's not as heavy as it looks. I've already hooked up my Kenwood home theatre system and Toshiba DVD player - sound and picture look great! My son and I can't wait till Tuesday when the Starwars Revenge of the Sith goes on sale so we can watch it on the new HD system. Judy if you decide to go with the 46 in. make sure you purchase component video cables to hook your DVD player to your tv. I'm using digital coaxial cables for the audio hookup.

I'm also using the Shaw Digital cable service - I have their digital cable box model 2500 for now. Since Shaw currently only has 4 HD channels, I'm going to wait until they get more HD channels or there is a dramatic drop in their price for their High Definition cable receivers. Rumurs have it that sometime in the new year they should be adding 6 more HD channels to compete with the satellite providers?

I would have to agree you can get some damn good deals at Visions and Shaw has 7 hd channels
just a little up date, I was seeing the rainbow effect alot when we first got this 52hmx85 tv I hardly see it now ,happy that I didn't take it back and make a big scene when it was a personal thing and not the tv

Greeting all

I am new to this forum and must convey that I have received a tremendous amount of helpful information here that has help me finalize my decision to purchase the 52HMX85.

I would appreciate it very much if others who have purchased this size model would be kind enough to provide me with some price deals that they got - I am looking for prices that include TV, Stand, taxes included. I have a couple prices so far with the best one being $ 3150 which includes TV, Stand, setup & delivery including taxes from a local Toronto dealer.

Please let me know if I can get a better price so that I can haggle some more with this dealer. He states that I won't be able to do better than his pricing.

Thanks for your time and appreciate any responses

- they both have the HD4 chip

I wonder if anyone can describe to me what this HD4 chip is. Texas Instruments refuse to acknowledge that a HD4 chip even exist and say that the HD4 acronym is a "manufacturer" name not something they have ever produced.

TI says that all their DLP chips are designed around screen resolution now (720P, 1080P) and they've dropped the HDx naming mechanism.

It's true TI never coined the name HD4. It's being described as HD4 since it's the 4th in a series of upgrades for their DLP processors. You have to differentiate somehow because TI will release another chip soon enough and it being the 720 model chip won't go far to tell it from its previous breathen.

Welcome aboard netvision,

That's a great price. FS's price would work out to about $4000 taxes in for the same deal.. too much IMO. I too live in Ajax and planning to purchase the same set you got.
Do they offer warranty for the unit (that covers lamp replacement) and how much?

If you don't mind sayin on here, which store are you getting this deal from? It's the best price I've heard yet for that set. Looking to purchase this set in about 2 months time.

Thanks!:D

Thanks once again for the info, dks. We are going with Shaw. How are they for HD? I did look in the T.V. guide for listings of HD, but I couldn't see any. I will look for the HD at the end. Thanks again.

Hi Judy,

The Ottawa/Gatineau region has Rogers/Videotron for their cable TV suppliers. I know that Shaw is out west, and they used to be in Eastern Canada too until Eastlink bought what was left of Shaw out there. I have no idea what they offer for HD. They may have a website with that information though.

I discovered something about my setup the other day that I thought I would share with the rest of you. See this thread:

Read back through this thread it's been thoroughly discussed already.

The HD4 chip is the latest 720p native TI DMD. It has 640 x 720 micro-mirrors and is wobbulated to give a full 1280 x 720 resolution. Wobbulated means each horizontal micro-mirror wobbles to produce two horizontal pixels. Up close this gives it the characteristic diamond shaped pixels. The effect of wobbulation IMO produces a softer more natural image versus it's predecessor the HD2+. There are many fans of the HD2+ over the HD4 who prefer the sharp crisp picture of the HD2+.

The so called xHD4 is the 1080p wobbulated chip with 960 x 1080 micromirrors producing 1920 x 1080 pixels.

How do all of you who have expressvu find your hd quality?
I know bell may not always be broadcasting true HD but when you do find something that is sharp, do you think the pq is still not that smooth?
If I look closely at the screen and the pixels, it looks a tad rough still.
My set is the 46hmx85.
If I go to stores who are showing HD via ota or cable and look at other sets like sony or pani, their pictures look much sharper when I look at it up close.
Right now I am watching Denver/Philly and the difference between the SD and HD channels is huge, I still dont think the PQ is as sharp as I thought it would be. I am also picking up the game via OTA with rabbit ears and the pq is a bit better than expressvu but still dont see the sharp picture like I see on other sets. I guess I am just having a hard time justifying a set that is only good on rare occasions and based upon the mood of expressvu that day.

The store is HD TV in Scarborough (Warden/Steeles). There are an authorized Toshiba Dealer and offer extended warranty. Not sure what the cost is for this.

Hi there. I paid $2700.00 for the 52HMX85 & matching black stand with delivery at A&B here in in Edmonton last month. I went for the full 5yr warranty (an extra $300 at A&B for it - much better than the 560+ that Besbuy and Fshop charge).

If your going to be buying this TV in BC or Alberta definately go somewhere like A&B over Futureshop or Bestbuy Canada.

As a side note, my Toshiba stand was on order back in late Aug and is STILL on back order (A&B gave me a generic loaner stand while I'm waiting for it to arrive). I'm a bit miffed because they said 1-2 weeks, but the stand is still on backorder directly from Toshiba and has been almost 5 weeks now. I checked around other locations in Edmonton and sure enough - they are all on backorder for the Toshiba black stand too. Strange thats its easy to get the TV all over the city, but not the black stand atm.

Kared

So kared and I were both able to get a pretty good deal on the 52HMX85 from A&B Sound (seems to just be a Western Canada company). Paid $2,599 for the set and $173 for the stand (finally got it in after waiting since September) for a grand total of $2,772 before tax or $2,966 with GST (no PST in Alberta). From looking at the posts, this is a pretty good price. Note that I got this price by haggling off of their posted sale price at the time ($2,799 for the set). I did not get the extended warranty - call me a gambler.

In another post, a FS employee stated that the cost on the set was $2,165 and $145 for the stand. Not sure if this is valid or not but you can use these figures as your starting point.

I've only just recently had my BEV installed but the HD stuff I've seen so far looks incredible on my 46HMX85. Easily as good as anything I've seen in a store, but tweaked to my liking. I've got the Bell Receiver set to 1080i, that looks the best to me.

I have been browsing this site for about a month now. I have to say the information has been absolutely terrific.

I just made my decision and went with the 52HMX85 w/ matching black stand from Future Shop in Whitby. I like the size, the two HDMI ports, and the colour. Not to mention the picture quality seen in several different stores feeding different signals.

I used prices from this site as reference and got the package for 2,700 + tax = $3,105.00. I'm picking up the TV tomorrow from the shop (I drive a van)and expect delivery of the stand within two weeks. (Might get lucky. They had one listed in stock but couldn't locate it today, maybe they'll find it.)

Easiest negotiation I ever made. I mentioned the prices quoted on this site, the price I wanted to pay and he got instant approval from the manager.

Thanks to you all, and I'll be sure to let you know how it goes.

I now have to negotiate the HD upgrade with BEV. (Hhmmm, rent or buy, install myself or get them to do it..?) They seem to love NEW customers and hold their current customers with disdain.

I'm VERY close to purchasing the 46HMX85.. I'm probably going to buy from Visions in NE Calgary, where on my last visit, I got the price down to $2165 for the TV, and then just as I said I have to talk to my gf about it first, he said what if we drop it further. While I never got the exact final number, I imagine I can get the TV+Matching stand for $2500 taxes in... and going to try for delivery included in that as well...now just to convince the girlfriend on this sucker.....
