: Toshiba 46HMX85, 52HMX85, 62HMX85 in FS
Duffs 2005-10-24, 07:51 AM Judy,
I had my 62HMX85 delivered around 4pm on a Saturday and by 5pm, it was unpacked, up on the stand, hooked up to BEV 3100 and we were watching it! I had to hook it ASAP so my husband and I could watch the hockey game that night! The next day we fiddled around and hooked up the surround sound system and DVD player, and also installed our HD BEV 6100. It's not difficult! There are diagrams in your manual to follow, with different scenarios (ex: with a DVD and sat, with DVD, VCR and Sat etc...). Good luck!
vtompke 2005-10-24, 10:41 PM Well after reading this forum for months I think I am ready to take the plunge - unless I can get someone to change my mind. It has come down to two t.v.s - the toshiba 44HM85 and the Toshiba 46HMX 85. I think I am going to buy a toshiba 44HM85
- I have a smaller room - so I need to stay at 44-46 inches (50 is too big)
I don't like the side speakers - like the bottom speakers
- I havent heard anyone speak of there being a "significant" difference between the picture quality between the 44HM85 and the 46MX
- they both have the HD4 chip
- I can save between 600-800 dollars (assuming that I can get it for 1799 vs 2599)
- so somebody tell me why I would be making a mistake here
Thanks!!

44" is made by LG (rebranded as Toshiba) while 46" is Toshiba made.
Go for the 46" better build quality, however, I personally like the 52HMX (which you can find for around $2599 if you look out for sales) because of the gloss black bezel and side mounted speakers...
Riley 2005-10-25, 05:52 PM I bought the 44HM85 three weeks ago and I'm returning it for the 52HM85 but simply because it's too small (I have a 63" wall). The picture is lovely on the 44HM85 though I have no complaints. Hopefully the 52 is just as nice because I didn't get much of a deal on that .. but the 44 was $1799 at Best Buy at the time. Enjoy your tv!
Jackyl 2005-10-25, 07:38 PM - New Here -
They have a new deal at Future Shop right now. A Toshiba 52" DLP [ 52hm85 ] and a Yamaha Home Theatre System [ YHT1605 ] for $2799. I was debating on whether or not to pick this up. I havent been able to locate this Toshiba model on display at any store here so it's hard to tell since I havent seen the picture quality. Any lag on gaming? Anyone else think this is a good deal?
Thanks.
Thanks Dks, I was just saying to my husband that I wish we could go for the 52in., but we are concerned about the distance that we have to work with - about 7.5 ft. We measured the distance in the store and tried out the 46HMX85 and then the 52HM85. Our eyes were somewhat tired form the 52HM85, but the pic. quality was not nearly as good as on the 46HMX85. I wish they had a 52HMX85 in the store to see if that would make a difference. Leons also told us that if we purchased the 52in. and found it too big, that they would not let us return it because they don't sell used T.V's. The guy said, "what would we do with it." I told him they could put it on display since they don't have one. What a smart a- - ! Anyway, I was wondering what distance you are viewing your 52 at? I sure would rather get that one. Thanks again.
Hello Duffs, Wow, only an hour! It will probably take us that long just to get it out of the box! Ha, ha. Seriously, it will probably take us much, much longer and going between the instructions and this forum as a reference. Thanks for the support, sounds like your enjoying your T.V.
My TV is about 10 feet away from where I usually sit. However when company is over, the closest person to the TV is about 7 feet, and they can still see it clearly. Especially high def. With HD, you can sit 4 feet away and it is still remarkably clear. However, SD is another problem. Some SD stations are worse than others. When I'm watching the CTV news on channel 311 I find it horrible. At 20 to 25 feet it looks pretty good, but at 10 feet it looks like the news anchors are sitting behind rippled glass sometimes. I'm not worried about it though. I think within the next 5 years more and more stations will be switching to HD. I watch mostly HD anyhow. If you watch mostly HD, then you won't have a problem. If you watch mostly SD, then maybe an HDTV is not for you as SD does not look all that great on any HDTV. Keep in mind that the 52" Toshiba is only 3" wider than the 46". The screen size is measured diagonally. So it is not a big difference at all.
If you think you are mostly going to watch SD programs, you might be better off going with an EDTV plasma as they are awesome for showing clear SD and HD. Some details are missing with the HD, which is of course the trade off. I went with the HD because I have a notion that HD is going to be more and more prevalent and I hope to keep this TV for at least 15 years.
Good luck with your decision!
zeicht 2005-10-27, 04:07 AM hi everyone, i had a 52hmx84 (last year's model) but returned it due to ghosting via HDMI and buzzing sound from the fan. Im in the market again for an HDTV, im split between samsung n toshiba...
Can any of the new hm/hmx85 owners verify that those two problems i had with my set are no longer issues in this years' sets? anyone experiencing ghosting via HDMI and loud fan noise? thanks a lot!
Krazymo 2005-10-27, 09:46 AM Pretty much after hours of hangling @ A&Bsound, I got the 46HMX85 to $2,200.
I'm actually REALLY curious as to how many people talk the price down at these Electronic stores? I'm not sure if I really got a that great of deal as I'm not aware of their Mark Ups. But I was surprise the prices on the price tags were negotiable, I thought to give it a little nudge and the salesman went down $300 bucks after 15 minutes from $2,799. So, then I kept pushing until $2,200.
Anyways, good luck with your purchase. But I'm really interested to see other people's responses regarding their negotiating tactics, if any at all
Sorry to slightly one up you but I got my 46HMX85 including the $350 stand and free delivery all for a total of $2,200 from Best Buy! Hooah! The original price was $2,799 as well. I can't wait for it, I get it on Saturday. If you got your stand with that price you stated then we got pretty much the same deal.
What I did was I went to Future Shop and another local store and played them against each other. Best Buy won.
MediaRoomManiac 2005-10-27, 10:00 AM I just went on the FS site now and it no longer shows the 52HMX85. Is this an error, or do they not stock the 52HMX85 anymore?
I'm worried, as I will be purchasing the HMX85 within the coming months and hope that FS will have the set when I want it.
I know Leon's and Compusmart carries the set too.. but honestly as much as I dislike FS compared to BB, I'd rather buy it from them as I can return/exchange it in the first month and their warranty covers the lamp, etc.
Can anyone confirm that FS still sells the 52HMX85? And if so, what are the best prices people have been able to get for this set with set, stand, warranty and taxes in all?
Thanks.

You better double-check the warranty, because I'm pretty sure no one covers the replacement of the lamp. A salesman at FS told me this when I was looking at this set.
JK5000 2005-10-27, 04:25 PM Leon's will cover the lamp for up to 4 years. I was in there the other day and they sales guy said that it comes with one year of factory warranty and Leon's offers an extra 3 years for abour $270. He said this includes the bulb and that they can write that on the receipt if I wanted. I still haven't pulled the trigger but I'm getting closer. I didn't get a chance to really haggle with them yet but I did ask if they could reduce the price a little if I purchased a DVD home theater system with it and they said "No". Probably the same sales guy that Judy was dealing with in Edmonton. I think a guy should be able to get them down to about $2000 for the set alone, taxes, warranty and stand extra. Maybe closer to Christmas. :D
Thank you for all your info, Dks. We do want to get the HDTV, for sure. I do have one other question though, how do you know what are the HD channels? Thanks again.
Hi JK5000, We have dealt with Leon's for many years now, and that is their policy not to haggle on prices. Also, when we asked about the lamp being under warranty, we were told no. At first the guy wasn't sure and he looked it up and told us no. We shop at the north end Leon's. The sales guy I was referring to in the earlier post was a very tall guy named James. There is another James who works in that department as well, a young looking guy, and he is the one who told us there is no warranty on the lamp. The young James is the most knowledgable sales rep I have ever met and seems quite honest as well. He goes to all the seminars regarding all this tech stuff and had just finished going to a toshiba seminar. He is the one we purchased from and we highly recommend him. Who was the sales guy you talked to? If in fact it was at the same Leon's? That would be great if the lamp was under warranty. We also got the extended warranty and I'm sure it didn't include the lamp.
JK5000 2005-10-28, 11:20 AM I didn't get the sales reps name but it was at the Leon's on the south side on the Whitemud. Maybe the guy I was talking to was not informed about the lamp warranty. Oh well I guess $300 every 3-4 years isn't too bad. I will probably deal with the north end store anyway when the time comes... either there, futureshop or A&B sound.
hi everyone, i had a 52hmx84 (last year's model) but returned it due to ghosting via HDMI and buzzing sound from the fan. Im in the market again for an HDTV, im split between samsung n toshiba...Hi zeicht,
I don't see any ghosting through any input feed to my TV. The HDMI doesn't work very good with the StarChoice DSR530 receiver. It is not the TV, it is the receiver causing the problem where the video drops out every 30 seconds. Pretty much everyone with every brand of TV is experiencing problems with the DVI/HDMI connection from the DSR530.
My fan is not really loud, but I can hear it especially when I first turn the TV on. After it has been on for 5 minutes I notice the fan noise goes away. It has been like that since the day the TV came into my home. I will admit that the noise is not very loud. It's just a bit of a whirrrrr noise. It's not a buzz. With regular volume levels, they drown the sound of the fan out completely.
Thank you for all your info, Dks. We do want to get the HDTV, for sure. I do have one other question though, how do you know what are the HD channels? Thanks again.Hi Judy,
I'm with StarChoice. Their HD channels are 281 thru 291. All of the channels end with the letters HD. For instance, CBSEHD/CBSWHD/ABCEHD/NBCEHD/NBCWHD, etc. The "E" and "W" indicate eastern feed or western feed. Each company may do this slightly different, but regardless of whether you are with Bell, Rogers, Videotron, *C, most of the HD channels should be clumped together and they should be easy to find.

Bell Expressvu HD are channels the 800's and there are 27 of them available.
True, but most of what I watch is available in HD format. The only thing I wish I had was Smallville in HD. Everything else that I need is available. Plus Bell charges an extra $10.99 per month for HD.
Thanks once again for the info, dks. We are going with Shaw. How are they for HD? I did look in the T.V. guide for listings of HD, but I couldn't see any. I will look for the HD at the end. Thanks again.
