Is there a major difference between the 46HMX85 and the Samsung HLR4664?

Some reps tell me to go with Samsung...Others to go with Toshiba...

Thanks

Just picked up a 52HMX85 plus stand from A&B (NE location) in Calgary. Pricing was $2,599 for the tv and $173 for the stand. I find A&B more willing to work with you on pricing then Futureshop and they know the product better.

Wish I had an A&B here.

I would never thinking of investing $15,000 or even $6,000 into a 1080p television until there is more HD content. About half of the stuff I'm watching on my 1080i tv right now is SD. The resolution is terrible. I would hate to see SD on a 1080p set. It must be unwatchable. Maybe in 10 years time I will decide to get a 1080p, but for now, with so few HD channels, I'm sticking with 1080i. It already has excellent resolution for HD content where available.

That's why I'm having trouble in deciding what I want to get. Pay $3000 for a 720p dlp or $4000 for a 1080p. The signal might not be available for several years, but if it happens sooner than we think, then I would need to do another upgrade.

But I wonder how regular DVD's and game consoles would look on a 1080p set.

It depends on if you are talking about HD-DVD or SD-DVD like we have now. I have never seen an HD-DVD so I don't know. I do know that my HDTV which is 1080i shows everything so remarkably crisp and clear when it is playing an HD formatted show that I cannot see how they could make it better. I'm satisfied with the quality and resolution with the 1080i HDTV. In 10+ years when I replace this TV, I would buy the 1080p or whatever the going resolution is and by that time I'll bet we will have many more HD channels.

Ya I'm talking about the SD-DVD we have now. I wondering if it could make them look a little better since it should upconvert to 1080p.

I know HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will look good since they at least support up to 1080i, and maybe 1080p if they decide to add it.

And I wonder if a 1080p set would cause alot of lag while playing video games, because of the upconversion.

Upconverting a DVD or any other signal for that matter can not 'create' picture information that is not in the original signal. A few tricks can be played to clean up the signal but if you start out with 480p and upconvert to 1080p your essentially taking each original line and duplicating to fill approximately two lines. This is why SD looks so bad blown up on an HD TV.

I agree to a large extent with your comment on going 720p for now. You will save $1K to $2K, enjoy a terrific 720p picture knowing that for many years there will not be much in the way of a better signal available. Sure the next game systems will be 1080p but today's 1080p sets can't accept a 1080p input... so what's the point. Well I guess there's the HP set but I'd be nervous of buying a first gen TV from a printer manufacturer.

Yeah... 720p now and wait a few years for HD DVD, BluRay and 1080p broadcasts to arrive.

Ya I guess that would probably be the smart thing to do.

I'll probably wait until the 1080p TV's get in the store later next month, hopefully that way the 720p sets will go down a bit.

$2,599 for the new 52"? That's really cheap... it was $3,199 last week! Is that an advertised price or did you haggle the price down from $3,199? I bought mine at FS last week and can still get price protection if it was advertised. Not sure if they'll give it to me if it's unadvertised. The price of the matching Toshiba stand at FS was also much more at $250 or so.

On another note, did you pick up the extended warranty? Do you guys think it's worth it on DLP TVs?

For the pricing on extended warranties I don't think I will ever buy one, but that is just my opinion.

Well I just got a reply from Toshiba, and they told me that the 56hm195, 62mx195... Would accept 1080p signal if they ever become available. I wonder if they really know what they're talking about.

Hi there. I paid $2700.00 for the 52HMX85 & matching black stand with delivery at A&B here in in Edmonton last month. I went for the full 5yr warranty (an extra $300 at A&B for it - much better than the 560+ that Besbuy and Fshop charge).

If your going to be buying this TV in BC or Alberta definately go somewhere like A&B over Futureshop or Bestbuy Canada.

As a side note, my Toshiba stand was on order back in late Aug and is STILL on back order (A&B gave me a generic loaner stand while I'm waiting for it to arrive). I'm a bit miffed because they said 1-2 weeks, but the stand is still on backorder directly from Toshiba and has been almost 5 weeks now. I checked around other locations in Edmonton and sure enough - they are all on backorder for the Toshiba black stand too. Strange thats its easy to get the TV all over the city, but not the black stand atm.

Well, I managed to find a 46hmx85 on display at CFA. It does indeed have the HD4 chip as far as I can tell(diamond pixels). So I guess Toshiba's site is right. Wow.http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Hi Guys!

This is my first post on this forum. I have been lurking for a couple of weeks, as I have been searching hard for my HDTV purchase and a very good friend of mine recommended I check out this site.

I am the proud owner of a 52hmx84
I paid 2200 plus tax (I live in AB, so I pay less tax!!!!):D
Stand for $228.
Me and my good friend who helped me out figured we got it very close to cost. I also had the good fortune of getting a Bell Ex 9220 HDTV PVR at the same time (they are almost impossible to find.)

I was actually looking for LAST years model and not this years with the HD4 chip. Of course, this years chip does have a few improvements over the
HD2+, but I don't think some of you realize that the HD4 contain half of the mircomirrors that the HD2+ has. It is not a "wobulated" chip like the HD4 and this chip is considered to have a softer picture as a result, whereas the the HD2+ is a sharper picture becuase you have all the mirrors. I don't see the color wheel effect, so in my opinion, I think I got the better deal! (Don't buy any Samsung with the HD3 chip, as that would truly be a bad decision.)

Regardless, I hope all you guys enjoy your new sets, for they all look great! The Bell HDTV looks fantastic, and I am very please with the purchase.
What have some of you done to calibrate yours sets?

The HD4 has already been discussed in detail earlier in this thread as a wobulated chip. In the end it's the overall image that matters rather than the chip.

Some stated opinions are the HD4 produces a softer, more natural, film like image while the HD2+ produces a sharper more computer generated looking image. However, these are opinions and to each thier own. I'm glad you found a TV you like for a good price.

Get a setup DVD to calibrate you TV such as "Sound & Vision Magazine Home Theatre Tune-Up" (it's reasonably priced and fairly complete for most users. I heard some Future Shops have in store). There are a number of other setup DVD's out there depending on how much you want to spend and how detailed you want to be.

Well, I just put in an order for the 46HMX85 with matching stand, 5 year service plan, and free delivery at Visions. I haven't paid yet but the total including taxes is $3500.

TV = $2500
Stand = $225
5 Year Service Plan = $380

+ Taxes = $3500

Is this an alright deal? Think I could get a better deal on either the TV or stand?

Can anyone confirm if there is any gaming lag or not while playing video games (GC,PS2,XBox) on the 52HM85 & 52HMX85?

I own a 52HMX85 and an xbox. I can confirm that there is no lag at all with the xbox. I have my xbox hooked up via component video cables to the TV and audio cables to my receiver. Works great!

Alright perfect then. That was one of my only concerns with buying a DLP, cause I heard the the Samsungs were bad for this. And I asked FS if they could hookup a XBox or PS2 to the TV, and they said they didn't have any to hookup, so I wasn't able to see that first hand. And I play lots of video games, so I didn't want to end buying a TV that would lag alot.
