JohnnyCanuck7 2005-09-21, 01:09 AM Hi JC LOL :)
Too bad nobody knows the answer to your question.... it's a good one.
I'm a bit disappointed that the manual says NOT to hook up a computer to the TV..... is there a possibility that the computer input could damage the TV ? ...
Is this Frosty "the drunk guy who can still shoot a bullseye" Beerman?
Hi Ken in Delta:
I have seen the 52HM85, but not the 52HMX85. The FS in Coquitlam has the 62HMX85 and the sales people say the 52 is the same, but smaller. If you have seen both the 52s, is there any difference in picture quality between them? Also, do you have any info as to when the 56HM195 may be out?
heybirder 2005-09-21, 08:46 AM The smaller TV 46HMX85 is using the HD2+ chip, but the 52" and 62" both use the newer HD4 chip in Canada.
Where did you get this information? It's been very hard to get accurate information for months even from Toshiba but they have finally updated their site with all the Canadian models and it looks reasonable. They state the 46hmx85 uses the HD4 same with all their 85 series and this is the first I've heard someone claim otherwise. It has 1 hdmi input and 1 set of audio in where as the other hmx line have 2 each . It's also lacking virtual dolby surround.
All the hm line has 1 hdmi input.
Michael TLV 2005-09-21, 09:27 AM Greetings
Doesn't matter what he says about the 46" ... just look at it and you know it has the HD4. Diamonds ....
Regards
Just got email from Toshiba stating that 56HM195 will be available late Sept/Oct.
I saw the Hitachi 50V525 at FS the other day and it looked really good. Has anyone bought it or compared it to the Tosh 52HM85 or Sony 50A10? I am now trying to decide between the three, although I am leaning away from the Sony because it does not have Picture-in-Picture.
By the way, can anyone tell me the difference between PIP and POP (Tosh has 9-window POP)?
PiP (picture in picture) usually means that the entire screen is full of one image, while a small "picture" is displayed in a corner. Sometimes the small picture can be moved or resized, depending on the TV.
PoP (picture outside of picture) usually means that two images are on the screen side-by-side.
Some TVs allow you to resize these side by side ones too.
Some TVs display a number of images at a time (say 4 or 9).
Remember though that PiP/PoP are often useless when you feed the TV from a STB, since the PiP functions are related mostly to the internal tuner. Sure some TVs allow you to see another input (like component video), but you'll then still need another input or the internal tuner for the other image.
emichon 2005-09-21, 03:02 PM Just wanted to let you know that Toshiba.ca just posted the specs for the 56HM195. There's an $800 CAD premium over the 720p sets. I wonder if it would really be worth paying that to get 1080p.

Nope....I've only seen the 52HMX85 and the 46HMX85. Both had an amazing
picture....that FS did not have a 62" left.
I have to get up to A&B Sound....look at the sets....talk to the
salesmen....start the buying process a month early....work on 'em....see if I
can get them foaming at the mouth to close the deal :D

There is a ton of confusion surrounding the HD2+ and HD4 chips in the Toshiba TVs. The reason for this is because Toshiba sells sets with different parts in Canada than they do in the US. Why they do this? I cannot tell you. I only know that IN CANADA, the 46HMX85 has the HD2+ chip, and in the US it has the HD4 chip. IN CANADA, the 52HMX85 and 62HMX85 has the HD4 chip. If you want to talk to some experts on this contact Stereo Plus in Orleans, Ontario. These guys really know what they are talking about. I asked them if the 46" Toshiba for 2005 had the HD4 chip and they said absolutely not in Canada. They had booklets from Toshiba Canada and information on what is really inside the Canadian models. These guys specialize in selling Toshiba, Panasonic, Pioneer and Sony sets. They make it their business to know what is what and how it all works. As well, it made so much sense to me because I can still see the rainbow effect quite easily on the 46", but I can barely see it on the 52" and 62". The guys at the other stores could not even tell me what chips were in those or even what the chips were.

Im not sure what the rainbow effect is, and i dont think i;ve seen it on the 52hmx84 yet.No, it is not bars traveling across the screen. It could be considered a splash of color, with green and red being the most prevalent colors.
The rainbow effect can be easily seen if you sweep your eyes back and forth from left to right - right to left without blinking on a dark scene. If the movie is dark, or if you are watching the ending credits in white and the background is black, you'll see the rainbows. The rainbow of colors appear to surround the letters or the lighter objects on the screen when the background is black. If you just look at the screen without sweeping it with your eyes, you won't see it. You can only see it with your peripheral vision. Some people claim to not notice it at all, but if you know how to find it I'll bet almost anyone could see it. The higher RPMs on the newer HD4 chip greatly reduces the rainbow effect on the DLPs. Sometimes I will see it when I blink, but it is very faint and I never see it on brightly lit scenes.

When they added the *****195 sets they seem to have rewritten the info on

FrostyTheBeerman 2005-09-22, 01:26 PM Hi guys :)
Do these new TVs need to have specially shielded speakers if the speakers
are tower ones that go on each side of these rear projection big screens ?
I'd like to take this into consideration before deciding on what route.
I like the Toshiba DLP 52" but don't know if I can use that TV with my current tower speakers, they are old ( about 8 years old ) but still work, but I'm worried about the magnets in them with these rear projection DLP TVs.
thanks for any info.
Duffs 2005-09-22, 02:06 PM I am new to this forum, but have been reading it for about a month now. All the info I have read has helped my husband and I decide on our first big screen. We just signed on the dotted line for a 62HMX85. :p Delivery of this set is scheduled for Friday the 30th. We purchased it at FS for $3,349 (plus taxes) incl. stand. Once I get it all hooked up, I will definitely give you my feedback. Thanks to all for the helpful info!
kared 2005-09-22, 04:32 PM It's been over 2 days now with my 52HMX85, and I still think it's just brilliant. I watched bits of so many different movies, along with Garden State (average video transfer) and Attack of the Clones (THE video transfer) in full, and everything looks astounding. Haven't been able to take my HD for a spin yet as my second DVI-HDMI cable is currently in the mail. Games, whether in 480p or 720p astound me also. Great unit, I gotta say.
I agree with you 100 percent. I've had my 52HMX85 for 4 weeks now and its the best thing I ever bought for my home theatre setup! It continues to blow me away with HDTV programming and DVD's.
My only annoyances (very minor)are:
1). I ordered the black Toshiba matching stand with the TV but its still not in stock yet (using a generic TV stand as a loaner until it arrives).
2). Ive noticed 2 VERY small pieces of what appear to be dust behind the screen when up close to it. You can't see them at all from 6+ feet away and they havent moved (nor are their any more of them) so I'm fine with it. One is at the bottom right of the screen (very bottom), and the other is about 10" up in toward the bottom centre. Again they are so small its impossible to see them on the screen (even on solid white) from my couch 9feet away from the TV. Have you seen anything like this?
Kared
Do these new TVs need to have specially shielded speakers if the speakers are tower ones that go on each side of these rear projection big screens ? These TVs are unaffected by the magnetic fields from speakers.
So why would anyone want a TV that shows rainbows all the time? It's always was there? but as I read... it is not as bad now... Sounds like buying a car that stalls once in awhile but everyone says it's normal... wait till the new car comes out.. it will stall less???
As mentioned previously the TV DOES NOT show rainbows ALL of the time. You may see them if you are sweeping the screen with your eyes on a dark scene with light foreground objects. This is why most people don't even see the rainbows. They don't know how to look for them. Plus the HD4 chip reduces this to the point where it is almost not noticeable at all. I rarely see them. Last night I watched the season premiere of Lost in high definition. There were several dark scenes in the episode, but I never saw any rainbow of colors. There are pros and cons to all of the high definition TVs. Here are some reasons some may like DLP:
- The brightness of the picture and the clarity is excellent.
- DLP uses less electricity to operate than plasma.
- DLP TVs do not have any screen burn-in problem like the plasma.
- Although still expensive, they are much less expensive than a plasma to repair.
- Pixel burnout is much less common.
- DLP technology was invented in 1987 by Texas Instruments and has been integrated into many screen projectors. It is only recently that they are building DLP projection TVs. In other words, the technology is not something new.
- You can purchase a 52" TV for $3000 or less. Try buying a HDTV 52" plasma for $3000 or less. For a 52" plasma you would be looking at $8,000 to $10,000.
- Changing the lamp almost renews the DLP TV to brand new condition again.
If you like to pause your TV while you run out to the kitchen or bathroom, you don't want to be worrying that the image is going to burn in. I don't know how many times I paused a movie at night to take a rest and then fell to sleep on the sofa. Leaving a TV on pause for hours could cause big problems if you own a plasma.
I am not saying plasma is a bad choice, I'm just saying there are some pros to buying a DLP over plasma, and this might be why people would choose a DLP television. It's the reason I did. I didn't just walk into the store and go eeny, meeny, miny, moe. I did a lot of research before I forked out such a large amount of $$$. I hope you do the same.
FaxCap 2005-09-22, 06:11 PM Do these new TVs need to have specially shielded speakers if the speakers are tower ones that go on each side of these rear projection big screens ?
Nope....regular CRT tubes swing a beam of electrons across the front
phosphour coated screen....that beam can be bend by stray magnetic fields
like those from strong speaker magnets.
(MMD) Projection TVs swing a beam of light...uneffected by a speaker magnet.

JohnnyCanuck7 2005-09-23, 12:33 AM If anyone spots the 62MX195 in stores in Vancouver anywhere let me know, I want to compare it to the 62HMX85.
If anyone sees the 62MX195 anywhere please share your comments!
DigitalCanadian 2005-09-23, 10:24 PM Yes! I am in Vancouver too and I am desperately looking for a 56MX195, or 62MX195, but it seems like Toshiba WON'T be selling the 56" model, only the 62" and above in MX195 cinema series format. The 56HM195 1080p DLP set is seriously lacking so many interface/cinema series features.
kramer001 2005-09-24, 05:47 PM Regarding the HD2+ and HD4,
I was at FS today and I was talking with a knowledgable guy, or so he seemed. Anyway, he said all the hmx85 series are with HD2+, except for the 72" that is due soon. He said the boxes and website are all wrong and the data they get from toshiba says they are still sending HD2+ to canada.
Anyone buy this?
While I was there, I picked up a new dvd player to see if that was part of my problem. DVD's still look grainy, mainly the older ones. Does anyone have Scarface? It is terrible to watch, the colours are aweful. Yet, I put in Shrek or Sin City and you admire the awesome pq.
On a side note, FS is now pushing edtv as they must be hearing complaints when people watch SD and not seeing the nice picture like you do in the store.
