I recorded some test patterns when CBC-HD was "off-line" during the lockout. I didn't really pay much attention, but were these HD or SD?

Was it the HD channel? Were the images 16:9? If they were 4:3 on the HD channel, then that's likely to be upconverted SD.

The usual test signal after sign off is upconverted SD.

Right now, it looks like the early morning of Tuesday November 1st will be the next opportunity to roll some HD test patterns. I can't tell you the exact time until we get closer to the date. The sequence runs for about 15 minutes. You will see 30 seconds of each pattern. They will air on both the Montreal CBMT-DT and Toronto CBLT-DT English HD stations.

All patterns are 1080i 59.94

If you can use them, that's great. If you don't know how to use them or want more time I suggest you buy/rent one of those calibration DVDs tailored for home use. Yes they're SD, but they come with detailed instructions.

I won't be doing this on a regular basis.

Marc, thanks for the information. No "resolution" test like there is on the SD DVDs?

I believe the resolution test on the DVDs goes to about 500 lines only... You can actually see it fade at 400 lines if you use a composite connection...

This is terrific - a big thanks to Marc and everyone at CBC that is making this possible. Unfortunately I'm on Shaw but maybe I can borrow a BEV pvr and work out some comparison to my Shaw box.

Don't want to hijack the thread but is CBC planning OTA HD for Calgary any time soon?

Thanks again Marc. I think this must be a first for Canada. HD Test signals that is. The only other source I know of is the DVHS version of Digital Video Essentials. Excellent job CBC.

One of the multiburst signals may be useful. I was a bit pressed for time so I didn't have a hard look at each pattern while building the sequence. In any case, that list contains every test pattern I have available.

Maybe at least once more when Shaw starts carrying CBC HD?

Anything in that regiment that might be useful as an overscan / geometry check?

I'd love to be able to calibrate my set for a 3-4% overscan (there is absolutely NO way for me to calibrate this for HD with an SD source).

True, but if you had an upconverting DVD player, you could.

But wouldn't upconverted NTSC test patterns give wrong results? I guess 16:9 geometry is 16:9 geometry, but I doubt that some of the other patterns would be trustworthy. Opinions?

Since we know through Marc that the original signal will be 1080i, any chance that those with suitable equipment can confirm how BEV, *C or their local cable company handle the signal, i.e pass through as 1080i or transcode as BEV is suspected of doing to 720p.

As I think about this, perhaps Marc has some knowledge of what the major carriers do with his 1080i signal??

Marc

CBC transmits 1080i and expects the carriers to deliver 1080i.

I didn't see anthing suitable.
