skram 2005-07-21, 12:30 PM Thanks joedoe. I guess that kills that idea for me as neither TV has component video (I know, I'm still in the dark ages - pretty bad for an IT guy, but new house - hard to justify $$ for new TV as well).
I was hoping that TV1 on the 9200 would have those jacks/outputs as well. As well, I don't like paying $600 for the 5200 when I can get the 9200 for less.
Westcoaster 2005-07-21, 12:50 PM Which problem would be short lived if they do come out with a external USB drive?
The short term problem of running out of space on the internal harddrive to store programs on.
For example, if the "external USB storage feature" becomes an option, you could actually maintain a library of disks with programming, the only caveat would likely be that they have to be played back though the 9200.
I agree that burning them to a DVD would be nice, but besides the obvious copyright issues, current DVD's do not store HD images anyway, you are limited to 720x480 video.

One feature I like on my Rogers 8000HD PVR is the ability to stretch upconverted SD broadcasts on HD channels. Does the 9200 have this ability? My first HD receiver didn't it I hate watching 4:3 on a 16:9 TV..
Thanks.
ringmaster_2000 2005-07-22, 04:54 AM can you use the Composite Video jacks (http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://www.vpi.us/vpi/images/items/rrcvext-3-mm.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.vpi.us/cgi-bin/vpi/rrcvext-3-mm.html&h=209&w=300&sz=8&tbnid=zkdOf4wXsr0J:&tbnh=77&tbnw=111&hl=en&start=3&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwhat%2Bis%2BComposite%2BVideo%2Bjacks%253F%26sv num%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26sa%3DN) for the 9200?
grider 2005-07-22, 07:28 AM A few ways but the easiest is missing the S-video output on the receiver.
You can buy a recorder with component inputs
You may have a A/Vreceiver which will downconvert the signal to S-video
You can probably buy some type of separate componets to s-video switch.
Thanks... so analog... in real time. Better than nothing.
Be nice if there was a high speed digital stream via USB for direct xfer to digital media.

Not sure if this in response to my question of using the 9200 with older TVs or to another part of this thread.
My understanding now is that you can use composite for TV2 but not for TV1.
TV2 - composite or coax
TV1 - component or HDMI
I was hoping I could use composite on TV1 in the short term as I want a dual tuner PVR now and will most likely upgrade to HDTV within a year. Thus I'm not keen on getting a 5200 now when a 9200 costs less, has more features, you get the extra equipment - would rather get the 9200 and be ready for when I get the new TV. Maybe there's a converter that will take component in and put composite out?

Quickly......no.
But a few workarounds have been discussed.
MrGrinch 2005-07-22, 09:39 AM And thank goodness for the 4x3-2 setting in HDTV setup!
My Toshiba 57HX83 RPTV is the ONLY year (83 series) that they made the set without the capability to use their built-in TW stretch modes for HDTV component and DVI inputs. Arrrgh!
Let hope for the sake of not having to work through the menus that Bell upgrades the software ASAP so the tuner stretches work... DISH Network down south has already done so...
fastfall 2005-07-22, 10:26 AM I upgraded from a 5100 to a 9200, and I was blown away at how much faster the GUI works. It is much snappier than my old ones!
Navigating the guide, setup pages, everything is just quick. It's not lightening fast, but it is now what I would deem prefectly acceptable. My 5100, 3100 and 2700 were all pathetically slow by comparison.

Why not just use it in single mode until you get a new HDTV? In single mode, all of the outputs, including composite send the exact same signal.
I know that it would be a disadvantage for you not being able to use dual mode, but I would figure that a 9200 restricted to single mode (really due to your TV restriction of composite only) would be better than a 5200 given the great price of the 9200 right now.

Great idea! :D - did not think of that as I was stuck on the dual mode idea so I had not read any of the threads talking about the modes. I could live with that restriction for now. I could use the TV2 composite to the TV and the TV1 digital optical audio to my surround sound receiver (I'm assuming in single mode you can mix the TV1 and TV2 outputs for video and sound).
I better go to FS today to pick that up!
skram 2005-07-23, 12:55 PM Well - that was disappointing. :(
I went to FS to get the 9200. Had checked their website first to see if stock - showed yes for both stores in my area (Halifax/Dartmouth). Talked to the manager of the TV department - he had one that was on layaway, so he checked the other store - they had 2 listed on the computer, while on the phone, he checked with me if I was a new or existing sub. Told him existing - then said that they only had the 9220s and they could not seel them to existing subs and that the 9200s were on order, supposedly being fedexed, but no timeframe of when they would arrive.
What a pain - they are listed as 9200 on the website, but the sku that it shows is for the 9220.
Nothing like finally having the price drop into the range you like and making the final decision only to no be able to get it! There goes the F&F discount!
However, he was nice and seemed to know what he was talking about. He apologized for my inconvenience and gave me his card.

There's been several suggestions on how to buy a 9220 as a existing sub. Easist is to have friend buy it under their name and activate it say it was a gift. REad more and you wont leave empty handed next time!
Altaman 2005-07-23, 01:03 PM skram:
Apparently they can sell the 9220's to existing subs. Have the store call BEV and they can manually authorize the sale.
Alt
To compound the issue, Bell had 9200 on the outside graphics of their huge carton, and my immediate reaction was, despite the yellow label saying it was to be sold to existing subscribers only, that there was not going to be any dish nor SW44 switch included. They were both packaged inside together with a LNB, even though I don't need them !
skram 2005-07-23, 01:18 PM vanrobson - I have read quite a bit, but have had less time in the last few days - so have been skimming more than fully reading (plus I thought I was not going to get one), thus I missed the "gift" thread - I'll have to go look for it.
Altaman - I'll have to give that a try. Hopefully I can get them to play ball.
Thanks.

Exactly! That should work perfectly for you. The only advantage the 5200 would give you right now would be dual mode. Given the prices, the HDD size, and the HD capability of the 9200, it should definitely be the way to do.
Good luck fighting to purchase a 9220 as an exisiting sub. Use the "gift from friend" strategy or whatever you need to - it will be well worth your efforts in the end!
skram 2005-07-23, 04:27 PM Well - that did not work. The second store that had one, sold it before I got there. They did tell me that they can't override it in their system. That is, even if Bell authorized it, the FS system won't allow it - the way it was entered in the system forces them to go through the new subscriber method.
The store manager told me she'd call their head office on Monday and see what can be done and once it's worked out she would give me the same deal on it that I would have gotten today.
At least they seem to know what they are talking about and seem to be trying to help me out, but I'm still peeved that I could not get it today. Once I made up my mind I was going to get it and that there should be a way I could, I wanted it now!
NoCarrier 2005-07-23, 05:06 PM They did tell me that they can't override it in their system.
I know they can't, they need to scan the number from the PRISM (new activation software from Bell) to complete the sale.
But like we said, just bring a friend, mom, girlfriend with you.. Sign her up and when you are ready to activate the receiver, just tell Bell that your (friend, mom, girlfriend..) can't keep the receiver, or that it was a gift.
The CSR never said anything, he just activated and in 15 mins I received my channels.
dbart 2005-07-23, 05:52 PM I would like to know if the 9200 has the SW44 in the box?
Also I hear that the 9200 downconverts recorded HD content when played back?
