Looks like a great way to use HD PPV rather than looping same movie over and over.

The CRTC refuses to approve HDNET. The channel's application has been sitting before the CRTC for approximately three years. BEV has instead decided to charge its subscribers a fee to sample handpicked HDNET programming on PPV. It would be far more preferable and ideal for Canadians to gain access to the actual HDNET channel. The CRTC seems to be against this idea though.

The CRTC feels that HDNET should stay banned in Canada and considers the channel a threat to broadcasters. The CRTC is denying Canadians the chance to watch the real HDNET and would rather provide them with this underwhelming and unimpressive substitute.

I do think BEV has done a good job of providing hdnet programing to those who want it without circumventing the crtc regulations, so everyone stays a little happier.
Perhaps the crtc or Bev are testing the water to see what kind of viewership response might be had from this?

The CRTC should approve the HDNET application that's been sitting around for several years collecting dust. Canadians should be allowed to subscribe to the actual channel instead of being charged a fee to watch individual programming. Charging individuals for handpicked HDNET programming selected by BEV is a scheme that benefits BEV more than its subscribers.

Canadians who invested in expensive home theater systems and HDTVs likely would prefer the opportunity to subscribe to HDNET if it was available to them. This seems more like a substitute devised by BEV to prevent HDNET from acquiring legal carriage in Canada.

BEV should lobby the CRTC to hurry up and approve HDNET. Of course, this won't happen because Bell Globemedia opposes HDNET and hopes the channel stays banned in this country.

Well this is just another way to suck more $ out of the consumer. I will subscribe to the actual channel, but PPV just like HBO boxing is not gonna happen!

Once the CRTC approves HDNET Canadian citizens would then be able to subscribe to it and watch the programming that is broadcast on the channel.

This sounds simple enough yet it's too complicated for the CRTC to comprehend.

Yup - these guys are pros at playing the game - gotta hand it to them. Get BGM to oppose at CRTC so Expressvu can select a few programs @$5.99 for PPV.

All PPV is overpriced. 90 minute movie for $4 or $5. Boxing for 50 to 100. Going by that standard $6 for what 3-5 hours of HD Programming isn't outrageous.

As for a cash grab .. let's say 1000 people a week order it and that would be on the very high side going by %'s. Normally, the provider's cut is about half of the price, so Bell is pulling in a cool $3K a week. Yippee

I wonder if that means that they think the full channel is worth $1000 a month. I sure hope they don't think this is going to keep people from going grey market. I have to say this move leaves a real bad taste in my mouth.

Funny on how people complain about the tactics used by BEV and parent BCE and yet every month they continue to cough up money to them.
So basically you are complaining for something that you are helping by paying them!!!!

We in Canada get what we deserve. As in politics, we know what they are capable of, we know what they are doing, but we keep putting them there... Same analogy with Bev and as long BCE and Bev are around to manipulate the industry things will be stalled as long as they can... it's simple.

I can't imagine too many folks paying for this. HDNET is not a PPV channel, so don't make it into one.

After several years in limbo it would be quite unfortunate if the CRTC rejects HDNET's application and announces that HDNET will remain banned in Canada exclusively on PPV as a programming block for a few hours every week from BEV.

It's certainly possible that BEV has inside knowledge regarding the status of HDNET since Bell Globemedia does have significant influence over the CRTC. Maybe someone at the CRTC leaked the decision to BEV before it was released to the public.

BEV's compromise seems to be at the expense of Canadians. This benefits BEV more than anyone else.
