: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2009 & Previous
HDTV101 2006-08-22, 01:50 AM this list should be usefull tonight, does anybody have the detriot stations that are reachable too?
Oh yeah they were BOOMING it this morning! Even digital 41 was overtaking CFMT out of Toronto... something I never imagined could be possible...

Detroit DT 41... signal here overtakes CFMT analog in Toronto!

Yaamon 2006-08-22, 09:12 AM HDTV101 whoo that's great. Too bad I was not up at that time in the morning ;) and I was a bit lazy to turn my antenna west last night too.
Is that WJW from Cleveland? :)
026163 2006-08-22, 12:32 PM I was rotating my antenna back and right at like 10:00PM last night and couldnt pull in anything. I figured the weather guys on that website were off tonight.
can it really take that long into the night before the channels come through? I thought once it gets dark, thats what u have for the night.
HDTV101 2006-08-23, 05:37 AM While I was searching for Cleveland I was picking up a signal on digital channel 41. I fine tuned my antenna and in comes this new station I never heard of before. I looked up the station ID and what do you know it’s
WKBN-TV 41 DT CP YOUNGSTOWN OH US 700. kW
They’re still listed on the FCC's site as having a construction permit ‘CP’ so they are very new to the air on digital!
Youngstown shown on the map as YNG.

Main channel 27-1

Subchannel 27-2 has a LP Fox station.
WYFX-LP 62 - TX LIC YOUNGSTOWN OH US 25. kW

That's amazing with CIII 41 in Toronto. I've locked WFMJ 21-1 (20) but that was before CBLT went live.
Try for Pittsburgh tonight (25, 48), they have some very high power stations.
stampeder 2006-08-23, 01:46 PM Some of these DX results are excellent proof of the directionality of your antennas. The idea that an antenna in the GTA area could shut out a local station to get a tropo skipped distant low power station is not just about the atmosphere doing crazy things, it is a testament to the very small back door (rear lobe) of the aerial too! :)

Hey,
The reason he was able to pickup a channel on 41 was because last night, the antenna that is used to broadcast 41/47 on the cn tower, went off the air around 1:05am while I was watching Global, I don't think it came back until at least past 6am.

Well that’s interesting to know... and yes that would make it much easier not having Global's channel 41 on the air at that time... however were they off the air the night before as well? I picked up the Detroit channel WXYZ and it uses channel 41 as well.

HDTV101 2006-08-28, 05:10 AM This coming week looks good for more fun with Tropospheric Skips.
Tonight I was scanning and the usual high power million watt Detroit digitals are once again coming in... However tonight I caught a new one on digital 21. This one turned out to be only 500 Kw and was just breaking range. I managed to snag a photo of Detroit channel 20

alebowgm 2006-08-28, 12:41 PM Just too bad we cant pull these stations in on a constant, daily basis...
mr.eous 2006-08-28, 09:30 PM WNYO-DT must no longer be at their pip-squeak 650 watts, since I'm actually getting the signal in Kitchener, tonight.
Not perfect reception, and I know atmospheric conditions are uncharacteristically good, this evening, but I was quite surprised to see this station at all.
026163 2006-08-28, 09:59 PM i don't think they've increased power, your just picking it up via tonights trop ducts.
pnear 2006-08-29, 09:24 AM Atmosphoric conditions for skip tonight do not judge by tonights reception.
I'm a newbie, could you elaborate? Was that just fancy talk for "it's raining", or is there something else you take note of (sun activity, etc). Just curious.

Pete check out this site:

pnear 2006-08-29, 11:07 AM After my last post I thought to myself "I bet there's something already here about that" and found the tropo site. One remaining question though... that site talks mostly about atmospheric conditions enhancing signals. However what I experienced was degradation last night.
Is that because:
a. Atmospheric conditions may introduce more signals from other cities that cloud the signal I'm trying to get?
b. I misread, and high tropo activity can cause either enhanced or degraded signals depending on several factors that can't really be nailed down.
c. Something else completely.
I'd appreciate the layman's wording on that, I'm still a bit confused as to what to expect when that tropo map shows high activity in my area.
026163 2006-08-29, 11:35 AM ya basically, you'll find certain channels you normally get, degraded, because other far away channels (you usually don't get at all) are on the same frequencies, and therefore, when the weather boosts them, it's like your getting two channels at once on the same frequency, which = messed up reception.
stampeder 2006-08-29, 11:49 AM Hi pnear, have a look at post #4 in this thread for links to a synopsis of the phenomena of Tropospheric Skip and Ducting.
DXing is such a great payoff to OTA - personally I don't usually care what programming is actually on when I first catch a new station - its the catch that I enjoy! Actually I can say that I've watched entire programs in the past just to wait and see the station ID. Now with digital the PSIP data makes that an almost instant thing.
026163 2006-08-29, 11:38 PM rochester, erie coming in for me tonight, no cleveland or detroit though.
the cool part about Rochester is 'The Tube' on the fox channel. i'm 100% Antenna only, so music videos are cool to see for a change.
edit: 12:28 AM
I've pulled in WKBN-HD and WYFX (FOX) on channel 41, out of Youngstown at 60%. This made me lookup the other youngstown digital stations, but NBC is on 20, but CBCHD is much too strong where I am, and ABC is on 36, which interferes with nearby CTS 36 analogue
The PBS station was on 46, but i couldn't get a lock, so i figure its low powered.
