: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2009 & Previous
CamDAB 2009-08-14, 09:09 AM @ CamDAB - I've always wondered if WSTM on RF 24 could stomp over CBLFT, since here in Markham I notice that when WSYR is strong, the reception on CBLFT gets destroyed! Great catch!
What I tried valiantly to get a pic of the initial reception... The TV displayed the info of CBLFT but the picture and sound were an NBC station in English.... Spooked me at first then realized I had a doozie of a stomp-over. :) Hit "Info" a couple of times and the re-map took hold.
(it didn't help camera batteries kept dying.... Grrrr)

PanaMark 2009-08-14, 04:58 PM as mentioned in an earlier post some of the Pittsburgh channels moved into London for a brief 2 hr stint. Here pictured is channel 11-1 WPXI-HD. I watched the news for a bit.

also it was nice to see a Hi VHF channel show up from Detroit. good old WJBK-DT
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/picture.php?albumid=120&pictureid=1350
As of around 7pm, I still don't have any Detroit DTV channels, but the Cleveland area channels are coming in pretty good:
3-1, 3-2 WKYC
5-1 WEWS always the most reliable
23-1, 2, 3, 4 ION
25-1, 2, 3, 4, 9 WVIZ
27-1 CBS, 27-2 FOX from Youngstown are back! ;)
55-1 WBNX
All at decent signal strengths (30% or more) that there are no dropouts.
Kinda strange that 43-1 WUAB, 43-2 THIS from Akron haven't visited London for awhile.
http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html updated Tropo forecasts indicate the Tropo weather to continue in South Western Ontario towards the end of the week next week. Happy DXing for the next few days!
PanaMark 2009-08-14, 10:01 PM @BCF
WUAB-DT 43-1 THIS 43-2 on RF 28 have been rock solid ever since I put up the antenna and preamp.
other Cleveland area channels I am picking up that I usually don't are 17-1 WDLI-D1 and four of its sub channels.
Youngstown 33-1, 33-2, 33-3 on RF 36 are coming in tonight too
49-1 WEAO PBS RF 50 too
24-1 WJET RF 24, 66-1 WFXP-DT on RF22 from Erie.
Heck even the finiky 55-1 WBNX-HD CW has been solid for a few days now.
Indeed the Detroit's are not visiting as of yet. WDIV was on when I went to work there this morning though and 62-1 WWJ.
edit: Detroit are coming in as of 11:00 PM just a heads up<
You know its a great tropo night when a LP analog station from Cleveland WXOX channel 65 is coming as clear as a DTV station.
HDTV101 2009-08-15, 03:53 AM Tonight I went looking for the smaller and more unusual channels to catch. I wanted to find something no one else has reported on that I’m aware of. First I found the PBS station out of Bowling Green, Ohio. I found this one 2 years ago when they were using channel 56.
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=26789&page=24
They have now moved to their old analog channel 27. This station is over 400 Km away from me in Mississauga.

HDTV101 2009-08-15, 03:58 AM Next I found WGGN-TV channel 52 (digital 42) out of Castalia, Ohio a religious station.

HDTV101 2009-08-15, 04:07 AM Then I swung my antenna around a bit and started to pick up a signal on 30… It was WEYI-TV (branded as NBC 25), is the NBC affiliate for the Flint-Saginaw-Bay City Michigan television market.

http://akn-systems.com/0000/weyi2.jpg
Google Earth took me right to WEYI's location... you can clearly see their Tower!

PanaMark 2009-08-15, 06:30 AM I remember your set up...
very nice pulls! looks like we have a leader in the Dxing contest.
thenewdc 2009-08-15, 08:01 AM I've been getting pretty much consistent reception from WSYR Syracuse here in Stouffville. There tower is 178 miles and they are only at 100 KW. They must be quite high. Its been coming in stronger than WROC Rochester and has been "ON" more than "OFF" in the last week.
Yaamon 2009-08-15, 08:34 AM You are right Garth, I still have my antenna position towards Buffalo and was flipping through and noticed 2-1 paused for a second and poped in.

We are sure having a hot dxing weekend and next week.
Think I might use the rotor and swing the antenna east and scan again today.
HDTV101, that's nice you always seems to get the west distance stations. :)
Garth J 2009-08-15, 02:16 PM Hey everybody!
Friday after midnight began another wild night of amazing tropo here in Markham! Utica started booming in again, with WKTV rolling in first, and soon WUTR came again (amazed I picked this up, as it's only a 50 kw signal!) Syracuse's WSYR also rolled in (and I should add, it also came in the day before almost immediately after I wrote that it was weak!)
Then Erie, PA started coming in strong with WQLN, WICU (and subchannels WBEP & WSEE). I love WICU and its subchannels, but man is the sound messed up on 12-3 WSEE. (I saw a Law & Order episode, and the audio sounded like a warped tape being played on a walkman with weak batteries. Very garbled at times.) WFXP was fighting hard against analog interference and only came through for a few min.
The biggest surprise was getting a brief wave of Detroit's WDIV on RF 45. The crazy thing was that, aimed at Detroit I would get WDIV. Then aimed the other way, I would get Rochester's WROC! That's the first time I can say I've gotten two different digital stations on the same channel in one night!
Saw flickering from (I think) Cleveland, but it was too weak. Same with Watertown. I actually think I may have gotten two different stations trying to come in on RF 7 - possibly WWNY from Watertown, and possibly WJBK from Detroit. But, alas, neither was strong enough to come in. (Though I did finally get a brief look at Watertown's WWTI on Friday morning near 7am - it decoded for less than a minute, but long enough to get the PSIP info into my Panasonic TV.) I also had RF 21 lighting up in both directions, but ultimately they cancelled each other out.
@ Yaamon - Glad you caught WKTV! Utica's been really strong in Markham for the last couple of days! It lasted for nearly 7 hours late Thursday night. And even yesterday was in for hours. I was also really surprised about the weaker WUTR coming in.
@ HDTV101 - Man, those are some great catches. Amazed you could get anything to come in on RF 27, as Global Peterborough has become a real pest to me. (Utica's WFXV would have probably come in for me, but kept getting hampered by Global, though it was still lighting up the signal meter.)
Great DXing everybody :)
PrinceLH 2009-08-15, 11:05 PM What a crazy 24 hours of reception. Many analogs and digitals out of the Toronto/Hamilton corridor. Picked up many analog and digital signals from the Ottawa area, including CJOH channel 8 and CBOFT digital, among others. Channel 54(50.1) from Erie, PA, was a new one at this end. Elmira, NY also made an appearance, with 18.1 and 30.1, here in Belleville, Ontario. Still trying to pick up a signal out of Binghamton, NY, but no luck as of yet. Be doing some more DXing tonight.

hsplrguy 2009-08-15, 11:10 PM Got the Rochester channels again last night while aimed at Toronto/Buffalo. Thought I would swing over and see since Erie's channel switches if I could get them got everything but WJET 24 dunno why but I do like WICU 12 and there sub channel setup.Always got Erie before the digital switch anyhow.
Phil81 2009-08-16, 03:20 AM Wow, this thread is exploding over the last 2 days! It's been insane with tropo for the last 2 nights especially... picking up a dozen or more analog and some digital channels from all over the map. At one point every channel except WJBK were gone from Detroit because of strong tropo late Fri into Sat morning
In the last 3 hrs or so (Sun):
*all these digitals already seen before
WIVB-DT 4-1 Buffalo RF39 -> Took out WADL-DT
WGRZ-DT 2-1 Buffalo RF33
WKBW-DT 7-1 Buffalo RF38

CIII-TV Owen Sound CH4 (heavy grain)
CBLN-TV London CH40 (almost mint)

CBFLT-TV Sarnia CH68 (ext poor) no pic taken channel lost
CBFLT-TV Penetanguishene CH34 (fair to poor) WIPED OUT local CFTV 34!
CBFLT-TV Toronto!!! CH25 (very clear)
CICO-TV TVO London CH18 no pic taken faded away fast
CFTO CTV 9 in Toronto also destroyed reception of local CBET 9 but not quite enough to take it out.
was near getting even Global digital in Toronto on ch 65 but another weak analog stopped it.
I put the analogs and couple digitals in a DH album http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/album.php?albumid=300&pictureid=1365
any other past dx can be seen on my homepage link by clicking my usr name.
Happy dx'ing all!
rajugsw 2009-08-17, 07:57 AM Me too. Trop Scat is awesome. For the last 3 days I've been enjoying news & weather (plus other programming) from I-90 cities except Buffalo.
:p
Here a some channels I picked up Sunday morning around 9am. Hazy sunshine with temperatures in the mid 20's and high humidity.
RF15 5-1; WEWS Cleveland, Signal 8/10, 409 km
RF34 61-1; WQHS-DT Cleveland, Signal 7/10, 407 km
RF17 3-1, 3-2; WKYC-DT, WXPLUS Cleveland, Signal 2/10, 406 km
RF28 43-1, 43-2; WUAB-DT, THIS Cleveland, Signal 6/10, 408 km
RF30 55-1; WBNX Akron, Signal 1/10, 407 km
Also, this morning (Monday) I was picking up CHCH analogue on Ch 2. Does anyone know where they have a repeater on Ch 2? Normally Ch 2 isn't a strong one on my CM4228.
My digital record still stands when last year on September 2, I was able to get RF22 5-1 5-2; WNEM, My5 Bad Axe MI, Signal 1/10, 432 km.
stampeder 2009-08-17, 03:47 PM Are you sure it was CHCH? If you look here at all the CHCH listings there isn't one on channel 2.
http://www.user.dccnet.com/jonleblanc/Canada_TV_Stations/ON.html
Global is on Channel 2 in Bancroft, so maybe they were running the CH news?
I wondered the same thing myself. I thought it was definitely an odd thing to see. I also wondered if CHCH had recently oped a new repeater or taken over some elses like CKCO Ch2 out of Owen Sound. It was definitely CHCH news on the morning show just before 9am on Analogue Ch 2.
cm023 2009-08-17, 07:48 PM CKCO Ch2
Channel 2 is still CKCO. Global runs CHCH Morning news weekdays, likely that Global Repeater.
