Around 1AM, his morning, signals from the west were carrying all the way down to Belleville, from Hamilton and Toronto. I noticed CHCH, on 18.1(11.1) coming in, off the side lobe of my array, when it was facing down toward Rocherster. I also received a number of others, CBC on 20 and another on 35(CTS). Also noticed all of my Buffalo channels were in strong, even 14.1,(WUTV 29) Still no luck with Erie PA, however.

I tuned in again just after 5pm, and despite the overcast skies and looking like it's gonna pour soon here in London, I was able to pickup some of the Cleveland channels! Interesting that 5-1 WEWS (ABC) is coming stronger than ever before - between 80% and 90% signal strength. :p

I did a few quick searches, and I found the William Hepburn's Tropospheric Ducting Forecasts link @ http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html..... now it's clear when the Cleveland channels will be available. Watch for tropospheric condition forecasts on the maps. OTA US DTV is definitely not reliable for everyday tv viewing in London.

Maybe this weekend, I'll reposition my 4-bay bowtie antenna by pointing towards Detroit. I was able to tune into just 4.1 WDIV & 4.2 THIS about 3 weeks ago. I'll see what happens over several days... 2-1 WJBK (FOX) will probably not come in (due to low ERP), but 7-1 WXYZ (ABC), 7-2 RTV would be nice. :)

@Pana
Yes they use the same tower.
WVIZ has a HAAT of 337m
WKYC has a HAAT of 307m
My point was that WKYC would be making adjustments until the winter.

@BCF
Link looks interesting. Now i need to figure out if its any good.

that's right BCF,
I went on the roof and turned my one antenna towards Erie, as I am doing some tests and BOOM some of the Buffalo stations are coming in. 2-1 WGRZ and it's sub channel's RF 33 and 23-1 WNLO or whatever on RF 32.

Cool! Reception of Buffalo stations without having to be 50+ feet high. :)

Emerald_Boar, I think the link is good, although I only found it today. Perhaps we can test to see if it is all accurate over the coming days. :)

I haven't quite figured out all of the broadcast antenna terms yet, but hopefully whatever adjustments WKYC from Cleveland makes later on, they'll be easier to pickup here north of the border.

In Thornhill, getting great reception on most other channels with my 4221 including other Buffalo ones, however 2.1/2/3 are black screen, pixelation, 25-65% reception. And its been happening off and on for some days now. I've tried positioning changes but the signal strength bounces around so much its hard to tell what's best. Is their tower about in the same position as the others down there, in terms of my location?

Is there a problem with that station, or something else going on in the atmosphere that would affect just them?
2.1/2/3 are OK now, very strong signal in fact. Must have been the station i guess.

@BCF
use the rabbitears database. rabbitears.info

Quick list of terms found in database
ERP (Effective Radiated Power) is the power which the TV channel is broadcast at.

HAAT(Height average above terrain) How high the antenna broadcast from above the ground. Higher the tower is the Longer the Line of Sight will be. If you can see the antenna the easier it will be to pick up the signal without need of deflection. I believe the HAAT on satellites is 38000ft about 12km.
(BTW. Due to Lake Erie you can add 50m+ to tower height. As London is on the other side of Lake Erie. Also channels from Cleveland cross less land mass then do channels from Erie.)

The is a Area cover in the database. I wonder if this includes area receivable in canada.

About that dxinfo site.
If I read the map correctly. This Sunday@noon should be a good day for receiving DTV from Buffalo, Erie or Cleveland.
Then Tuesday should also be real good.

During today's monsoon type rain, I expected nothing from Buffalo. Lo and behold, 4.1 was coming through, normally it's a touch & go station here. 17-1 and 23 continued their rock solid strengths. 2-1 and 7 were MIA, but that's normal here. Now that's it's clearing up 4-1 is fading...

Really strange.

In the last few weeks channel 9 seems to be weaker. Anyone else having a problem? I am wondering if the high winds and that hail storm did damage to the antenna or something. I can't see anything wrong but the signal is dropping alot more than it was.

Camdab: What is your OTA set-up?

Toshiba 19AV600U LCD Panel

Truly horrid, very old Radio Shack set of VHF/UHF rabbit ears (large dial in the plastic base to "remove the ghosting") with a square UHF loop, in the window. Due to our height (10th floor facing east) it's amazing just what comes in. 5-1, 17-x, 23-x are rock solid all the time. 9-1 is there most of the time. Everything else varies either due to severe multipath or ERE (enhance reception event(s)) as I call them. :-)

During tropo or inversion events, I've had Watertown, Rochester, etc. including ION. In analogue, I usually can get 12, 27, (Peterborough I think), sometimes without snow, and some Global repeaters from eastern Ontario. I've been compiling a comprehensive list of received stations with their mappings. Because of the shape of our apartment building being a massive L, I'm at the base of the L and top part of the L is as long as a city block. If I go out into the street, I can see the CHCH tower without obstructions. However, it's signal has to pass through that total length of the "L" coming in from the west side. Thus everything from the CHCH tower is totally destroyed by the time it reaches me. 11-1, choppy, 44-1, never, 36-1 rare, and I seem to remember there's also one on physical 15 that I've never had either. So, yes this location provides bizarre reception. I'm thinking of a CM4221 on an indoor support in the window that I can aim for whatever I want that's "in view", or a VHF/UHF combo. That's planned for late August. The CN tower can be seen from here, so Toronto is covered, lake effects notwithstanding... :-)

I expect the CN tower broadcasts, like DAB radio, to improve greatly once Winter sets in.

Rain isn't nearly the enemy of OTA (particularly UHF) as fog and mist are.

Even a heavy snow won't affect the signal too much.

Must be getting reflection or something in my favor

I was initially frustrated today, since the weird off and on rainstorms and weather seemed to dampen the tropo. I didn't see anything but slight flickers on my usual tropo cities. Yet, around 4am I decided to do one last check and saw something lighting up on RF 21. I thought "Wow....maybe it's Watertown!" When I adjusted the antenna, and the picture came in my jaw dropped when I saw it was WMYD MyTV Detroit! Then I clicked over to RF 45, and for once I was thankful for no Rochester tropo as it allowed Detroit's WDIV to come through. They have "This TV" on their subchannel (which was my first time seeing "This" since they were dropped from WKBW's subchannel) but I was a little disappointed to find that they don't have a weather subchannel anymore. But that's a minor disappointment compared to the amazing jazzy feeling of picking up Detroit for the first time digitally from Markham! :) Detroit doesn't quite beat my personal DTV record (which is currently Utica's WKTV at 222 miles away from me.) But it comes close, as both WMYD and WDIV are 221.18 miles away according to HDTV Magazine's website!

And now I see what people mean when they say Detroit news is scary.....I stayed up and caught a good chunk of the WDIV 5am news before the signal faded out, and man, in the first five minutes there were disturbing crimes, criminals, and car crashes. Eeeks.

On a sidenote, I haven't written in about my reception from the last few weeks, but like bigcam406 wrote earlier in the thread, WSYR from Syracuse has been popping up a lot, and I've also been seeing lots of Erie's WICU.

Current weather (though the tropo is gone now) from Weather Network via Buttonville airport: 21 °C Overcast, Feels Like: 29, Wind: S 7km/h, Relative Humidity: 94%, Pressure: 100.75 kPa, Visibility: 13.0 km, Ceiling: 12000 ft

Erie stations booming in tonight: 35.x, 54.x, 66.x.

WNYO came in once, ION more frequent tonight.

I'm watching FOX News 66 (RF 22.1)

July 29- Munro Airport - 19C, Partly Cloudy, Wind 5W, 91% Humd.

This morning I was on at 6:20am and found that ION was at 85% signal strength, so.... I figured I would run a scan and OMG!!!

I got everything from Rochester and stuff from Detroit and some stuff I've never even heard of.

In all, over 30 digital channels.

Mind you, all the extra channels were at about 40 - 45 %.

So cool, It would be great if these came in from time to time and not just when the stars are in alignment.

A man can dream, can't he?

I'll get the channels on here later tonight.

Where are you located?

Using what equipment?

Located near the corner of Kennedy & Sandalwood Parkway. (Heart Lake area)
I have a 4221HD at about 35 to 40 feet up, but I am on a hill, which helps. Running just about 35 - 40 feet of coax and a $10 no name amp. RCA TV. Nothing expensive.

I have the antenna pointed just about pointed at the ION tower. So kind of in between Toronto and Buffalo.

Just in a good location I or lucky I guess.
