: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2009 & Previous
99gecko 2009-06-25, 07:19 AM Rochestor was coming good too. I picked up the VHF signals for the first time.
8.1 - WROC
10.1,10.2 WHEC
13.1,13.2 WHAM
31.1 WUHF
(didn't pick up WXXI)
I was also getting action on my CM4221 last night from rochester VHF, but no locks.
Anyone know what is on RF 29 now? Getting a signal on my Zeinth 900 set top box, but no lock.
check this:
http://rabbitears.info/statistics.php?request=channel_list&channel=29&list=DT
I had 5 channels flickering on scans using 2 different gen 4 tuners, but no locks. My reception of CIII-DT (Global Toronto) was suffering as a result of this tropo.
cheers.
RingtailedFox 2009-06-25, 07:32 AM it's a great day for DXing, guys! I managed to snag my first LPTV DX... i'm watching CJMT-TV-2 on 20 in London... it's the Cantonese news...nevermind the strong adjacent-channel interference from WMYD-DT on 21... CHCH-TV-2 on 51 and CFMT-TV-2 on 69 are BOOMING in to the point where my Samsung is locking with stereo and SAP. also getting CBLN on 40 and CFPL on 10 barely, but able to make out their logos on the bottom right corner.
current conditions at Windsor Airport (CYQG):
Haze, 24 °C / 75 °F, Haze. Feels Like: 33 C. Wind: 0km/h, Relative Humidity: 83%, Pressure: 100.96 kPa (29.81 inches of mercury), Visibility: 9.7 km, Ceiling: 24000 ft
Also getting severe co-channel interference on 31 (WPXD-DT Ann Arbor) from CITY-TV's Woodstock repeater (also on 31), enough to destroy the already-fragile signal from WPXD....
dsspredator 2009-06-25, 07:57 AM - WSYR was coming in on RF17 since WNED's analog vacated it.
I watched WKYC for over 2 hours last night on channel 17.
I actually lost WGRZ so it was nice to have WKYC.
dsspredator 2009-06-25, 08:02 AM Anyone know what is on RF 29 now? Getting a signal on my Zeinth 900 set top box, but no lock. Having some fun with this
This is my guess: WWCP-DT JOHNSTOWN, PA.
peano 2009-06-25, 08:29 AM I lost all my Buffalos last night except WNED. But I was and still am getting WFXP Erie PA.
addp009 2009-06-25, 09:06 AM I've only been using OTA for about 5 days, so my knowledge is limited.
I was getting all the buffalo stations except ION and other reglious stations for the first few days, but last night starting at around 9pm most buffalo stations faded out. Checked again this morning, and some stations are coming in again like NBC and PBS. But for example, WIVB is still gone.
Is this normal for hot summer days? Or what can explain this?
goforit 2009-06-25, 09:17 AM Yes, all BUF stations were terrible last night. I'm thinking there is something wrong with my amp. What is going on? The weather was clear and warm. Funny thing though, I picked up ION for a little bit.
stampeder 2009-06-25, 09:29 AM addp009, it was a massive case of tropospheric activity last night that caused the problems. Tropo is weather-related and can sometimes create bizarre situations in the high summer.
We have many veteran and newcomer DXers here who live for this kind of event. A great resource for predicting these events is William Hepburn's Tropospheric Skip Forecasts: http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html
What the DX gods giveth, they also taketh away! :D
Yep,same thing here,I lost all Buffalo stations last night for a while. Did a rescan and ended up getting ION and the PBS stations out of Erie with a very strong signal. Very weird indeed last night.
Bob
goforit 2009-06-25, 09:36 AM So this dxing can go either way? Far far away stations come in, and local/regular stations flake? Surprisingly, I got ION last night but no WIVB. Does it matter if it's analog or digital? Analog seems less sensitive.
tlamothe 2009-06-25, 09:44 AM Eerie is approx 375km. The transmitter in Erie is on Sesame St. There is also a google street level view where you can see the transmitter tower. Pretty neat.
I had the signal momentarily, went to adjust the antenna and then it was gone. All I have is the black channel where it and its 2 subs should be.
FYI - the antenna I have used to be listed on the antenna chart as a second choice to the terk (It was the radio shack antenna, the source still sells it.) Great UHF, terrible VHF.
I'll be excited to move tomorrow and see what I can do with the outdoor antenna.
stampeder 2009-06-25, 09:53 AM Really strong tropo can do that, causing TV signals to skip through the atmosphere over long distances and suddenly overwhelm a local signal for awhile.
There is also the phenomenon of ducting, which is like TV signals being carried inside a fire hose!
For night owls on a hot summer evening DXing is full of suprises, but now that DXing has gone digital its a fresh start for the veterans. :)
stampeder 2009-06-25, 09:55 AM I'll be excited to move tomorrowYou know you're hooked on OTA when a move is considered with reception in mind! :D Good luck with your move, and I hope the back spasms go away real soon!
addp009 2009-06-25, 09:57 AM Thanks stampeder! Had I known it was great conditions for DXing, I would have scanned the tuner! Time to read up on DXing!
stampeder 2009-06-25, 10:02 AM Some people try NOT to scan during tropo events - the kids get up in the morning and all they're favourite channels are changed! Guess who they go wake up! :D Likewise if you are using a PVR it can reset a whole bunch of recordings to channels that might never show up again so you miss your favourite stuff.
If you have more than one ATSC tuner you might want to dedicate one as your DXing box. Given the low price of a DTV Converter box (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=42186) you might want to buy the best of those (I think that would be the Zenith these days) and DX with it so that your "normal" ATSC tuner(s) stay scanned on your expected stations.
goforit 2009-06-25, 10:07 AM Can someone send a note to my wife, and tell her why we lost WKBW and missed that crazy Japanese game show?
She saw a little bit on CITY 57-0, but I thought I could trouble-shoot and fix things- Mr. Antenna to the rescue. Lo and behold the dx gods were working against me, no WKBW in whatever I did, no game show and one royally upset wife that cursed the antenna and is ready to get cable. Oh the woes of OTA.
stampeder 2009-06-25, 10:08 AM Tell her she just starred in "I Survived A Crazy Southern Ontario Tropo Evening!" :D
Hepburn is predicting some really strong Tropo for the days ahead in Southern Ontario (http://www.dxinfocentre.com/tropo.html). Like what Yaamon was saying, this is a good time for OTA installers to take their vacations rather than deal with all the service calls from confused viewers.
addp009 2009-06-25, 10:16 AM Good point! Right now I just have my 4228HD connected to my Vista Media Center machine which does all the PVR stuff, so I won't be rescanning on that. I'm going to get a pre-amp and a splitter, so I can use my TV's built in tuner for DXing while the PVR does it's thing. No one uses the TV tuner anyway.
kooguy 2009-06-25, 11:18 AM Goforit,
Strange that you are losing some Buffalo channels due o Dxing...For me, I gain a few from Rochester but no missing channels.
Porky 2009-06-25, 02:02 PM Same as 'Goforit' , I'm @ 9th & Britannia and at 9:00pm lost ALL my Buffalo stations with the exception of 23.1 CW.
Now that was a 1st for me !
As expected....they returned in the morning. (damn this DX'ing) :)
