I am fine with members posting analogue DX results as it shows our new-to-DXing members how its done, such as in the case of Phil81's excellent job.

For me personally I am intrigued about how DXing in the digital age is/will be. I should have specified DTV but I didn't.

For that reason let's concentrate on DTV DXing and see who can come up with the record for this year. :)

cheers

I'm glad to report my FIRST DIGITAL DX! WEWS-DT has arrived with 65% signal strength on my Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600... i took a screenshot of 20/20, but i'm waiting for a station ident or newsbreak...

Further oddities:

WSYM-TV (Fox 47 Lansing) is somewhat viewable... CHCH-TV-2 (channel 51) has been replaced with ABC of some sort for a few minutes, though i don't know of any analog ABC affiliate on 51.... channel 40 is a battleground between WLMB-TV (Toledo) and CBLN-TV (London), picking up something on 53, got WVIZ 25 and WUPW 36, along with a brief glimpse of CFTV 34 (at only 280 watts, too!)

pictures of the stations i was able to get screen captures of will be shown on my website in a special directory, http://www.mobianlegends.com/dxing/

Wowsa.....I'm starting to wonder if we've hit the Summer tropo season, as for the last few days I've picked up Rochester off and on, Erie's WQLN, and today for the 2nd time Cleveland's WEWS!

@ RingtailedFox - I'm guessing WEWS must have a pretty powerful signal to be floating out to Windsor and then making its way to Markham later on. :)

I was getting all the Rochesters before going to work today (this was about 1pm-2pm.) Then when I got home at 11pm Erie's WQLN was in, but quickly disappeared. Then by 1am, the Rochesters all floated back in, WQLN came back in, and after 3:30, Cleveland's WEWS came in and lasted off and on till roughly 4:30. (They were showing a Canadian show called ReGenesis! Heh....and I got some great shots of their logo at a commercial break!)

Current Markham weather from Weather Network (Buttonville Airport): 8 °C, A few clouds, Wind: N 6km/h, Relative Humidity: 87%, Pressure: 101.18 kPa, Visibility: 24.0 km, Ceiling: unlimited

does this count, Have no pics but a friend around dundas and dixie 2-3 stories high with a phillips amplified mant940 UHF antenna mounted indoors pointing at Buffalo with obstructions, ( usually get's good buffalo reception) , a few weeks ago at night time picked
up 10 hd mostly dtv channels from rochester. They were PBS, Wroc, fox 31.1, NBC 10, abc and some other with no pixelation , but only lasted 2 hours. Is this a good record for a indoor DX, this has gotta be 110 miles away with a indoor antenna, I would put the phillips mant 940 in the antenna chart for indoor antennas. Just my 2 cents.

Is anyone else having trouble with CBC tonight?

It's the only channel I usually have absolutely no problems picking up. I was just watching Old School and it went from a solid 27snr to dead 0. Then it came back solid and went dead again. It just keeps completely cutting out.

Yep its churnin' good again on late Fri early Sat Jun 7 channels all over booming in again drowning out local channels...
picked up:

WGRZ-DT Buffalo (my current digital DX record) 210mi to their tower
WFUM-DT Pbs Flint/Lapeer crushed and replaced WUAB-DT (happens frequently) / 71mi
WICU 12 Erie analog was a bit ghosty and weak / 132mi
WBGU-DT Pbs Bowling Green OH / 93mi

took more pics on my digi dx (http://s730.photobucket.com/albums/ww305/dxandmore/TV_DXing/) log

I lost WDIV-dt ...again.. right on edge of their directional (http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=DT284246.html) antenna contour
WJBK-dt usually indestructible but very weak this time
WADL-dt (normally weak) gone again with slightest tropo
and a few digitals from Toledo were mia completely

even as I type WJRT 12 analog is crystal clear as it gets.
WAPQ-DT 49-1 TCT on the same tower is also booming in

Hm, yeah, I'm starting to think it may be the tuner (just bought a Hauppauge HVR-950Q).

There are newer drivers that may help reception. I have the same tuner

For the first time, I was able to receive WXXI-DT (PBS, Rochester) 21.1, 21.2, 21.3 (channel 16 actual) last night. Signal was moderately strong. Weather was about 13c, light rain, cloudy. Total distance 237km.

Count me in...I'll be trying to better my best of last year which was WVIA Pittston, PA from here in Oshawa. approx 395 KMs or 244 Miles.

I went up yesterday and check everything out and then did a resync of the rotor.

I'm thinking after the analog shutdown we will all be seeing further dx stations.

Cheers, Richard.

Just a question. What do you guys use, to guage distance from your location, in regards to the transmitter location? Do you use a program or website for measuring this?

I use TVFOOL.COM. It typically provides info in miles, which I convert to kilometres.

@PrinceLH
I use this site http://www.hdtvmagazine.com/programming/broadcast.php
Set up an account then in your profile set your home location. Pick a market, then pic a transmitter. Voila your distance to transmitter.

WOW!!!! I finally got to see Syracuse's WSTM in my own home in Markham!!! :) (I had previously gotten it a couple of times at a friend's apartment in downtown Toronto, but never from my own home until now!) And the antenna had to be in a really odd position too! Normally my "sweet spot" for reception is in my sunroom, but I experimented and found that I could only get WSTM with my antenna in my living room pointed out towards the window! And this also the day that they're supposed to shut off their Channel 54 digital frequency to prepare for the move to digital channel 24 on June 12th (which I fear means that most of us in or near the GTA will have no shot at it, since there's CBLFT on digital 24 already.) So that makes me even more flabbergasted at receiving it just before they change over! I consider myself very lucky and am still jazzed about it! Heh......also picked up Erie's WQLN, but it was very sporadic - as were the Rochesters. (They were coming in pretty nicely when I got WSTM, but they're going in and out a lot.....maybe because Kitchener was borrowing them for the evening ;) ) Great tropo!

Current Markham weather (via the Weather Network from Buttonville Airport): 12 °C Partly cloudy, Wind: E 7km/h, Relative Humidity: 82%, Pressure: 101.77 kPa, Visibility: 24.0 km, Ceiling: 7500 ft

@Jase, I picked up 8-1 WROC-DT and 10-1, 10-2 WHEC-DT on Sunday morning from my home in north London. I moved my third antenna more towards Buffalo as I had it between Erie and Buffalo. I added a pre amp and on Saturday night I got,
2-1 WGRZ
4-1 WVIB
7-1 WKBW
17-1 WNED
23-1 WNLO
26-1 WNYB

49 analog was super clear but I think the digital channel is on 34 and I get WQHS-DT from Cleveland which is interfering with it. Putting the antenna more towards Buffalo cost me my Erie's though.
24-1 WJET-DT
54-1 WQLN-DT
66-1 WFXB-DT
are gone.
oh on Friday night I got 35.1 WSEE and the two other 35-2 and 35-3 from Erie to download and a signal for like 5 mins

@GarthJ
once again, sweet catch on Syracuse's WSTM. You really need to get that puppy up on the roof man. Your passion calls you. Come to the dark side.....mmmmhhaaaaaa, lol keep up the cool Dxing up there in Markham

I got the following with pics and all:
KY3 KYTV-TV NBC Springfield_MO on RF3
WDAF-TV FOX4 Kansas City on RF4
KSNW-TV NBC 3 Wichita, KS on RF3
KOTA-TV 3 Territory ABC Rapid City, SD on RF3
KYUS-TV 3 / KULR-TV 8 News Miles City, MT on RF3
KTVQ-TV Q2 CBS Billings, MT on RF2

Unknown CH on RF5
Unknown CH from Nebraska /w added map of same area *note Jansen and Fairbury"Phil: That was some great DX you got there.

I was in on the same opening, and got several of the unusually close (not a typo - for E-skip) stations you saw, including KIMT, KYTV and WDAF, but no sign of any of those Montana stations.

Your channel 5 was not from Nebraska itself. The only full power channel 5 in Nebraska is KHAS in Hastings, and they have already gone digital, with an impressive 45kW on channel 5. Your station was probably one in a neighbouring state. Note that the map is not a state map, but a map for a very small area (Plymouth, Jansen and Fairbury are all on the same [Jefferson] county), this station was tracking one particular thunderstorm.

Note as in previous posts that E-skip is not known to be influenced by local weather.

Also note: a few US stations will be operating digital TV on channels 2 through 6, with many of them being in the Plains region (the states South of Canada's Prairie Provinces), where reaching a large area at minimal expense is important.
E-Skip reception of lowband VHF digital stations is more difficult than analog - a DTV signal has to be reasonably strong, with little interference, and very little multipath (and E-skip often causes multipath). But several DXers have, nonetheless, received DTV by skip.

Last night around 9pm EDT I did a bit of hunting around and was able to receive channel 42 (CKCO repeater in Oil Springs) and channel 29 (CIII repeater in Oil Springs). The picture wasn't very good but I was able to make out the programming and confirmed it was the same on my local CTV (9) and Global (41) channels.

Interestingly the picture improved as planes flew over to/from Pearson International Airport. :)

Weather conditions: cloudy, 16°C, dewpoint 9°C, RH 70%, pressure 1014 mbar (rising).
