: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2009 & Previous
rob50312 2009-05-17, 03:15 PM I am getting a repeative interference every 2 to 3 seconds to CKVR analog 3 when ever its windy and the city,GO wind generator is turning about 1.5km north of me.I guess I will have to wait for them to go digital to get better reception. If that ever happens and with enough power and height to match analog 3 ?Anyone else see this interference only on analog 3 ?
rob50312 2009-05-18, 01:06 PM The internet is full of material about this problem. So watchout if someone wants to put one up near you if you use OTA.
bigcam406 2009-05-19, 02:18 AM rec'd chch 11 today for about 5 mins.never had received this station before ota.funny how i had reception of this station, but couldnt get pbs or wivb this morning.weird.
stampeder 2009-05-19, 03:00 AM You need to tell us where you are so that we can understand why it seems special to you. Also tell us what the weather was like.
bigcam406 2009-05-19, 08:18 AM sorry stampeder,im in south oshawa,a mile north of the lake.weather conditions were sunny, calm, approx. 10c.i live in an apt facing north with no balcony, using a MANT510.
goforit 2009-05-19, 09:56 PM 29 and 49 are terrible tonight.
I never have a problem with FOX29.1, but MyTV49.1 has always been up and down like a rollercoaster. 49.1 may be a little more directional away from us and we are lucky to be able to catch the edge of the signal. The slightest southerly breeze and it's signal drifts out of our line of sight.
49 (34.1) is always better than 29 (14.1) for me- running on a 4228HD. Might be that 15.1 is 2.5 miles from my house and causing interference on 14.1...
Garth J 2009-05-20, 04:34 AM Hey everybody!
Yesterday (Victoria Day) was a *great* day for DXing in Markham. I picked up all the Rochester digitals (WXXI, WROC, WHEC, WHAM, and WUHF) plus I got WQLN from Erie again, and the frustrating thing was seeing signal flickers on two channels from Syracuse and one from Erie. RF 22 (most likely Erie's WFXP) was trying its darndest to come in, but was getting knocked out by a stronger than usual analog 22 CHEX from Oshawa. Then I saw poor signal readings on RF 54 and RF 17. I'm guessing 54 was Syracuse's WSTM and 17 was Syracuse's WSYR. Alas, none were strong enough to lock. Hoping to snag them someday!
Now today (late Tuesday, early Wednesday) I'm again picking up a solid WQLN from Erie, a solid WXXI from Rochester, and a wavering WUHF. (Rochester isn't as strong tonight.) I swear the PBS stations seem to engineer their signals to go far distances, as they seem to come in solidly and more frequently than any of the others.
Markham weather right now (from The Weather Network) is: 11 degrees (a few clouds), Wind: 0km/h, Relative Humidity: 66%, Pressure: 102.51 kPa, Visibility: 24.0 km, Ceiling: unlimited

This was my first time picking up the Buffalo networks.

goforit 2009-05-20, 07:38 AM Buffalo 26 is actually Jamestown NY and there are two- 26.1, 26.2. Mostly religious stuff, but shows oldies at night- Lucy, Bonanza, Hillbillies
x4mer 2009-05-20, 06:56 PM Channels my television tuner were trying to pick up but could not get a lock were DTV channel 16, and DTV channel 32. Any idea's?
Since you were getting Buffalo stations, I would assume 32 was WNLO 23. I would guess 16 to be WSEE 35 out of Erie.
PrinceLH 2009-05-21, 12:27 AM Weird reception tonight. Could only get WPBS out of Watertown, tonight and could not receive WWTI at all and WWNY only, after 11PM. Syracuse was a write off, as was Rochester. However, Buffalo was booming in. Must be some tropo happening off to the west, but bending skyward from the south and east. Anyone else DXing here in South Central Ontario tonight?
RingtailedFox 2009-05-21, 06:17 PM 16 and 32 could also be CHWI-TV Wheatley and CICO-TV-32 McGregor/Windsor... but that's doubtful.
PanaMark 2009-05-21, 08:40 PM RingtailedFox 16 and 32 could also be CHWI-TV Wheatley and CICO-TV-32 McGregor/Windsor... but that's doubtful
nah,
it was DTV channels that I was trying to lock on. On my Panasonic, the tuner looks for the analog channel first and when nothing is sensed it checks for the DTV channel next.
I can however on some evenings pick up analog channel 16 CHWI on Wheatley's transmitter.
Garth J 2009-05-22, 04:00 AM @PanaMark - Congrats on getting those Buffalo stations! Your new pics are great! I loved the WJET pics, as I'm craving more Erie reception, but so far WQLN is the only Erie station strong enough to reach me in Markham. (Then again, I think it's also a bad combo of stronger analog signals / digital signals in the way. Erie's 22 WFXP gets blocked by 22 CHEX Oshawa, 52 WICU gets blocked by 52 Sun-TV, and 16 WSEE gets blocked by digital 16 WXXI from Rochester. I have gotten fuzzy analog reception of WICU as recently as March 2009, though)
It seems like the past three days (Mon-Wed) were great reception days. I got WQLN *again* yesterday, though it wasn't as consistant as the previous two nights. But it was coming in off and on again from 3am - 6am. Pretty amazing to catch it three nights in a row, and so far it's the furthest digital signal I've picked up in Markham. :)

Garth J 2009-05-23, 04:28 AM WOW!!!!! I'm still flabbergasted and going crazy because I'm sleeping over at a friend's place in Downtown Toronto (and of course I brought along my Zenith DTT901 converter along with a CM4040 antenna) and picked up TWO Syracuse stations tonight!!! :) I got WSTM 3-1, 3-2, 3-3 and WSYR 9-1 and 9-2. I was also getting flickers of signal, but no lock on digital RF 29. My friend's apartment is on the 27th floor of a building that faces Southeast of Lake Ontario, so he gets amazing reception! I was hoping to snag Syracuse and wasn't sure if I could pull it off in Markham, so I'm glad I brought my gear downtown with me. (Heh....my friend actually put up with me getting depressed when I saw WSTM flicker in and disappear, and I didn't have my camera ready.....I was so down, but then it came in again and he helped take pics while I held the antenna!) Then to my shock after getting WSTM, I got WSYR too! Still really jazzed!!!
Toronto weather right now (from Weather Network) is 11 degrees (a few clouds), Wind N 15 km/h, Humidity 54%, Pressure: 102.22 kPa

cm023 2009-05-23, 12:07 PM I'm up at the cottage on Lake Huron (Bruce Peninsula) for the weekend and I have alot of lake skip for you all. The roof antennas are pointed SW over the lake.
This is likely the last Analogue Lake Skip for me (I guess i'm going to have to get a digital converter box, since I had lots of fun with ATSC on my Samsung LCD up here last summer). anyway, here is the photobucket link http://photobucket.com/cm023-lakeskip
Also, for those who are interested here is some FM Band skip http://photobucket.com/cm023-fmskip
and for the first time ever, Cell Phone Skip... At&t and T-Mobile both showed up as networks on my iPhone (I wouldn't dare connect....) http://photobucket.com/cm023-cellskip
stampeder 2009-05-23, 12:21 PM You'll have fun with DTV skip for sure! The FM skip is really something, and if you get an HD Radio receiver you'll probably be getting a ton of subchannels too.
Which town are you nearby, cm023? What sort of TV antenna are you using at the cottage?
cm023 2009-05-23, 12:40 PM In terms of the antenna, I'm not 100% sure what is up there, I'm thinking maybe an older channel master. I'll post an image on my photobucket account when I get a chance.
