Guys
DTV signals from Detroit and Cleveland are coming in. I've been plotting trends for the last hour. Just wanted to let some of the London boys know....
let you know what new ones come later.
Mark

conditions @ 7:00 P.M. source: the weather network taken from London Airport
clear and a few clouds, temp: 24C, wind:S 15km/hr, pressure: 102.14 kPa, ceiling: 10000 ft, humidity 50%
visibility: 24 km
I forgot that I went in the attic and pointed towards Cleveland earlier in the week, as a result I was able to add some more DTV channels that my turner was able to pick up:
43.1 WUAB-DT roughly around 40% signal for 15 mins.
43.2 THIS TV
61.1 WQHS-TV roughly around 50% for 25 mins.
and of course I already have been able to get
5.1 WEWS-DT around 45% for 15 mins

then @ 11:50 P.M. clear and a few clouds, temp: 10C, wind: E 19km/hr, pressure:102.33 kPa, ceiling: unlimited, humidity 87%, dew point: 8C, visibilty: unlimited
antenna turned towards Detroit
2.1 WJBK-DT signal 38% watchable for 15 mins
4.1 WDIV-HD 40% to 70% watchable most of the evening, few drop outs
7.1 WXYZ just watchable for 5 mins

still no locks on 50.1 WKBD and 38.1 WDAL however the analogs comes in pretty good

I found out there IS a low-power Daystar Television Network affiliate in Buffalo on Channel 40... that would explain the religious station one of the posters saw. Daystar is a religious network. The station is WDTB-LP, which has a construction permit to move to channel 28 and change it license from hamburg, NY to Buffalo, NY.

Guys,
as Stampeder eluded to the other day, currently we have great tropo conditions exsisting in Southern On till tomorrow morning.
Happy Dxing
Mark

channels so far
2.1 KDKA 2 Pittsburgh, Pa (CBS)
11.1 WPXI Pittsburgh, Pa (NBC)
11.2 RTN
27.1 WKBN-HD Youngstown, Oh (CBS)
27.2 WYFX-HD Youngstown, Oh (FOX)

Overall I'm am very pleased in this evenings new channels found
I was floored when I was able to pick up the two stations from Pittsburgh!
I took a lot of pics, so when I get around to posting them to my Flicr I think I'll create a link threw my profile.
I was running up to the attic every 15 mins and repositioning my antenna to different directions
I tried to direct towards Buffalo, Erie, Cleveland and Detroit, and did a lot of new Digital only scans, so I won't erase any old channels. I really love my Panasonic's scanning interface on account if it senses a channel it will stay there for a few seconds and try and get a lock.

That could explain why I have problems with CTV 9.1 (actual channel is 40) at times!

Hey everybody!

Like PanaMark & Stampeder have said, today has great DX potential in Southern Ontario.....it appears that Pennsylvania is trying to come in for me here in Markham. So for those in and around the GTA, it's worth swinging the antennas to Erie and see if anything comes in. (So far nothing's showing up for me yet....but I am getting Poor Signal Quality readings on WQLN from Erie.)

Crossing fingers I pick up some new channels today! :)

The upside is, though, after June there should be a lot less interfering channels coming in, and come 2011, even less.
Then the balance tips to the 'good' side for DXing :)

Hi Guys,
I just got around to uploading last evening's Dxing results. From now on if you click on my name you can go straight to the picture posting site I have set up.

@recneps77
I agree totally.

@Stampeder
My wife thinks it's more of a nuisance. lol

Great pics PanaMark! I can live vicariously through your DXing, as that night didn't turn up anything new for me. (Could barely pull in Rochester's WXXI, which frequently comes in for me.) Awesome DXing from the pics I saw! (And loved seeing another Fox station's local newscast, which seem like a novelty for me as Buffalo's WUTV doesn't air one.)

Tonight, though, seems pretty decent. Some Rochester tropo coming through for me here in Markham. (WXXI very strong, even their analog is solid for me, and saw WUHF for a couple hours - funny thing I noticed is how they'll run a car commercial, then run an ad for a laywer who specializes in auto accidents back to back!) Haven't gotten the "big 3" in digital yet, but saw a huge co-channelling fight between analog 13 CKCO and 13 WHAM.

WOW!
All I got last night was crappy Buffalo reception.

But I don't like my Panasonic TV for scanning because you can't tell what channel it is on.

@dsspredator
Basically my Dxing tendencies are a well thought out plan. I basically find out what days will have good tropo to start ( i refer to a web site for this ).
Then I arm myself with a list of television stations that broadcast from about a 150 mile radius ( again i refer to different web sites and data basis ) As my set up is a simple one I travel back and forth to the attic to scan different area's during these decent evenings. I have considered a rotor but I think I am just gonna get another antenna and point one towards Detroit and one towards Cleveland. Armed with my list of stations I am able to tune in to there real DTV channels ( the Panasonic display will say either No signal or Program not available). If it says Program not available then I just sit on that channel and wait till the signal reaches a point that the PISP will download and BOOM the virtual channel shows up and hopefully a picture (even if it is just for a while). I hope this gives you a little bit of an assistance for your Panasonic tuner.

@GarthJ
I really like your web site. I like your sense of humor when you review your pictures. Keep up the great job up there in Markham and I await what channels you'll find in your area. Keep up the great work. Thanks for your support.

(How is my poetry?)

Better than my reception I hope. Still solid with no losses here, but noticing all South Buffalo stations down by more than 30 points. WGRZ is way down to about 60% (usualy 82-92). Grand Island stations are down also, but not nearly as much as South buffalo.

In the past 15 minutes, things have rebounded slightly - but still approaching marginal.

Time to start thinking about adding a small amp to turn On for nights like this....

Can anyone explain to me why a week ago I was getting CBC-HD + others and now I can't even pick up the regular CBC with my antenna?

since 11:30pm

:( Rolling lake fog due to the sudden drop in temperature over lake Ontario and lake Erie has now wiped out buffalo 49.1, hamilton 15.1 and erie 35.1/.2/.3. Everything else seems OK except 23.2 & 17.1/.2/.3 has dropped to about 60%. Apparently fog is our enemy.

@ota_canuck: In Kitchener, I had the opposite effect. Buffalo was booming in (except FOX). And for the first time ever, I managed to receive WFXP-DT FOX ERIE last night.

I was watching 3-1,2,3 from Syracuse this morning. It was coming in with a very good signal. Must be the storms to the South.

What happened to the days of "K" being for call letters west of the Mississippi?

USA CBC fan
2009-05-06, 09:36 PM
There are actually several exceptions.

Most date back to the days before there was an FCC, and two different government agencies were giving radio licenses (USA spelling).
One agency had "W" calls, the other (which had branches throughout the country) had "K".
Most of the stations in the West thus had a "K", while many in the East applied in Washington D.C. and got "W".
When the FRC (later the FCC) took over, the Mississippi River was set as the border, but extant stations were not forced to change their calls.

Examples:
KDKA and KQV, Pittsburgh.
KYW, Philadelphia (later Cleveland and back to Philly, a story in itself).
WBAP, Fort Worth.
WRR, Dallas
WKY, Oklahoma City.
WACO, Waco.
WOW, Omaha.

Is anyone else besides me having problems with E! channel? I have 3/6 bars, sufficient to watch the channel with no problems, but last week and today E! starts pixelating for no reason! Again, good signal and this happens? Happened both times between 8pm & 9pm.
Any ideas or just me?
