PrinceLH,... Are there any other broadcasters in your viewing area that are supposed to be using channel 23.1 or 32.1 ?

Hi Biggy,

I was monitoring the signal strength of 29.1 yesterday. In the morning I was getting 5-6 bars. In the mid-day to mid-afternoon I was getting a solid 8 bars. By late afternoon it dropped back down to 4-5 bars. By around 7pm I was down to 2 bars and around 8pm I was at 1 bar and lost the signal altogether.

I was wonder if I should go up on the roof at night and try and adjust the antenna to see if there is a better position at night.

Is this just due to atmospheric conditions or do they reduce their signal at night?

Thanks,
Steve

FOX Buffalo 29.1 will be flakey. No they don't reduce power at night. Toronto is on the Fringe of the coverage pattern. Signal will fluctuate. the lake has great advanages and disadvantages at different times. If we had hills and trees over the same distance, we would get very little signal. Mist rising off the lake is one of the problems. Signal can fluctuate with high winds because of big waves. Even sunset can effect signals.
What you can do about it depends on how far you are willing to go. I doubled up my 4228 pointing at Buffalo, A lot of expense and effort for a little improvement. For me, well worth it.

Yeah, yesterday was specifically bad weather-vise. I had troubles with all Buffalo channels whole night. Had to watch Idol on CTV :(

I too noticed some of the US stations were perfect a couple of days ago but now changed...

How long do these periods of Weird Weather / Abnormal Reception usually last? Variable, and there are some good explanations earlier in this thread.

Also have a look in this thread for the link to Hepburn's DX prediction website. It is a must-have tool for the spring and summertime in the southern parts of Quebec and Ontario!

I used to get fox29.1 at 80-100%, but now it's only 20-30%... and if the weather shifts prevail [fog, clouds, wind etc] it drops off entirely. Same thing is happening with 49.1.

Dxing is quite interesting and fun to experience, however it also is a very undesirable condition of DTV that at times renders regular/reliable viewing unstable. During periods of freak reception of distant stations, some of the local stations are overpowered.

Today I'm getting Cleveland Fox8 on 8.1 and it is killing out wgrz 2.1. Earlier this morning I had another Ohio station 55.1 and it was killing wivb 4.1. I usually get 49.1 mytv, but it drops off whenever distant stations drift in to this viewing area.

Dtv has a long way to go to before it will become as stable as analog was.
FOX Cleveland 'can't' interfere with WGRZ. FOX Cleveland is on 31, while WGRZ is on 33. There was either too much attenuation of the WGRZ signal reaching you, or another CH 33 was interfering due to tropo - possibly CH 33 from Youngstown OH.

The only channel in OH that used/uses 55 (it's analog only) is WBNX. Their digital channel, which would likely show up as 55.1, is 30. This would not knock out WIVB since it's on 39. WBNX is from Akron OH, just south of Cleveland.

Just wanted to post some other observations since those Ohio channels moved into our viewing area yesterday

On my cm7000, channels 43.1/.2/.3 used to be the same channels as 17.1/.2/.3 until the other day when the Ohio channels tried to move into this area.

The channel 43.1 display bar now says WUAB in place of WNED and 43.2 now displays TuBE instead of WNED...

There was never any video or audio since these display changes happened, just the display bar info has changed. Channels 43.1 & 43.2 are now just blank channels with no signal at all, but 43.3 is still unchanged and showing the same 17.3 PBS Think programs

To the best of my knowledge, no.

Sometimes I can get WPXJ on analog 51, but recently the programming is the same as WNED 17.1 (PBS). Is there something going on with the signals (interference, dxing, etc.) or does WPXJ have PBS content?

Hi there goforit,

I've been getting the analog WPXJ 51 for the last few days and it's been showing the usual mix of mostly infomercials, then Mash/Boston Legal reruns in prime time. Not sure what would cause WNED shows to duplicate on there, but maybe it was some DXing goodness.....my signals have been really strong in the last few days.

Yeah, channel 51 has been booming in for me these last few days. Not sure if it's tropo or what.

My signal strength on WUTV has always been strong. After they dropped their analogue transmission it got even stronger. SNR around 30 and 8 to 9 bars. Several days ago it dropped to 20 SNR and around 3 to 4 bars. I can still get a lock on it but I am wondering what has changed. Is it still a tropo effect or has something else changed? All my other stations are reacting in their usual ways. I am located in Markham if that makes any difference.

I've gotten the same.

wutv used to be rock solid- 10/10. but lately (it's still locked on), the meter is 3-4/10. wnyo, which I thought was a weaker signal is still booming, 7 to 10/10 all the time. all my other BUF channels are 10/10.

WUTV-dt signal is consistently weaker now.I have 63%to65% vs 87 to 92% during normal reception conditions,no drops. There must be a problem or change to their antenna.WNYO-dt is exactly the same at 65%to 69%.All others the same.

same here. wutv seems weaker lately, while wnyo (same tower, lower power) booms in as always. could channel 15.1 (suntv on the chch tower) be interfering (increased power?) with 14.1 (virtual 29.1 wutv)?

Still waiting to see if anyone has received a response from WUTV to see if its something at their end...
