: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2009 & Previous
eliminator 2008-10-13, 05:51 PM on saturday i managed to pick up WHAM, WXXI and WHEC from rochester... i even managed to detect WSTM (54 which remaps to 3) from syracuse and it was strong enough that it was added to my channels list but unfortunately not enough to get an image... i thought that was very impressive considering my bad location (bit of a valley and overall low elevation)
mr weather 2008-10-15, 11:13 AM This past weekend was very good for tropo. Warm days and cool nights.
Rochester was booming in nearly every night. Oftentimes stronger than Buffalo!
alebowgm 2008-10-27, 11:35 PM Horrible night for me up in south Thornhill (Bathurst/Steeles area). Right now, I am not getting CHCH (E!), WUTV (Fox), CITY (City TV)
WKBW (ABC), CIII (Global), CXXT (SunTV) and CITS (CTS) have all been observed as pixilated and dropping out as well this evening.
This is on the DTB-H260F, I haven't checked the LN-T3242H yet this evening.
Conditions around sunset tonight had me receive several distant stations from the Kawarthas.
Analogue:
Ch 22 Global -Stevenson, ON nr Windsor... 399 km barely receivable
Ch 42 CKCO-TV - Sarnia, ON... 334 km good picture
Ch 50 WKBD-TV (CW) - Detroit, MI... 431 km perfect picture
Ch 62 WWJ-TV (CBS) - Detroit, MI... 422 km poor to fair picture
Digital: Samsung ATSC Receiver
56-1, 56-2, 56-3 on Ch 43 WTVS (PBS) - Detroit... 422 km (3/10)
2-1, 2-2 on Ch 58 WJBK (FOX) - Detroit... 423 km (3/10)
4-1, 4-2, on Ch 45 WDIV (NBC) - Detroit... 423 km (6/10)
20-1, 20-2 on Ch 21 WMYD (My 20) - Detroit... 422 km (6/10)
audiohead 2009-01-13, 08:20 PM I don't know whats happening but I can only get 3 channels tonight when I normaly get all the Buffalo, Toronto and Hamilton stations... what gives? Is it the extreme cold temps?
ontherooftop77 2009-01-18, 01:24 PM yep always in the summer , reception is the best which sucks because it's best to watch t.v in the winter.
stampeder 2009-01-18, 02:13 PM During the past week, with both the Vancouver and SeaTac areas having been blanketed by pea soup fog for 6 straight days, it seems strange that there was a blast of great reception up here at the time. :)
In actuality here's what happened: the ground level temperatures all week were in the 0 to 3 degree C range all that time, but due to a temperature inversion there was a layer of 15 degree C air sitting stationary on top, such that people up on Grouse Mountain or even up at Simon Fraser University had gloriously sunny and warm weather. The OTA signals from SeaTac were quite strong at my house.
Today it looks like most of the fog has burned off to reveal a clear, sunny day.
Jaygeetee 2009-01-21, 01:40 PM Stampeder, I should have read your post first before getting my hopes up.
I moved my antenna yesterday and am now getting ALL Sea-Tac digital stations 70-100%.
KOMO comes in at 74% which is amazing. So for a short while (till I saw your post) I thought I was in ota heaven, however I'm guessing this ducting isn't going to last that long.
Anyone else still getting great reception in the Lower Mainland?
stampeder 2009-01-21, 02:13 PM KOMO has been the most difficult one for me all along so when I turn my CM4228 around 180 degrees its a shock to get it locked! :) Are you still using stacked 4228s?
Jaygeetee 2009-01-21, 03:16 PM Yes, still have the stacked 4228s and am considering building the DBGH unless the antenna move made a big difference in reception.
Hoping for a good signal on SuperBowl Sunday.
goforit 2009-02-01, 10:50 PM hello dxers:
I have never seen such wild fluctuations in signal strength than today/tonight- super bowl sunday 2009. I'm located on east mountain hamilton, on. and always get my nbc from wgrz . I'm running 2 4221s, one aimed for TO and one for BUF. the wgrz consistently comes in around 4 bars out of 10 on my samsung- pn50a550s1f, and never drops.
Crazy reception tonight/during the game. Started out around the normal 4 bars, then went up a little, then right down to 1, and then lost the signal. Momments later, the signal shot up to 10 and stayed there for awhile. then back down to 4, down to 1 and dopped again. Right now it's back at 10. What is going on? I even got wnyo tonight, never happened before, and many buf channels are coming in stronger than usual; also cfto came in at 10, which usually doesn't happen.
Why is there such wild signal fluctuations? I've never seen this before except for super bowl sunday.
alebowgm 2009-02-02, 12:53 AM goforit, I was hovering around 4-7 bars before today, then boom I am up to 10 bars. I did have one quick drop out and then was back to my normal 4-7, although I didnt check as the game progressed if it had gone back up or not. I think the rapid change in temperature tonight had something to do with it...
Rocco 2009-02-04, 04:49 PM Does anyone know what happened to WIVB-TV Buffalo channel 4? For the past several days I've been unable to receive either the DTV or analog broadcasts. And, afaik, nothing at all has changed on my end, all of the other stations are coming in normally.
rob50312 2009-02-04, 05:02 PM Both WIVB signals are fine here right now
alebowgm 2009-02-04, 05:04 PM Same here out in Thornhill
goforit 2009-02-06, 10:54 PM some dxing going on for my locale- hamilton east mtn.
I never get wutv, but tonight it is coming in and out. Also, rarely get wnyo but tonight it is locked in- yee-ha. I'm running two 4221s. All other Buffalo channels are 10 bars/100%. I hope when I add the pre-amp and/or use the 4228, wnyo and wutv will be better received
mille 2009-02-07, 08:22 AM Dxing this morning with the warming of the temp.
CBOFT-DT22 at 40% ( CM 7000 )
CBOT -DT25 at 80%
:D
pyroberns 2009-02-09, 11:18 PM Found tonight a LARGE signal strength jump on buff. ABC, CBS, and FOX stations. Just curious if anyone knows if this is a weather phenom or have the stations bumped their power up in anticipation of next weeks switch? They are now coming in stronger than local without having adjusted the antenna (homebuilt 4 bay 4221 knockoff), where yesterday they were just a blip on the sig strength meter that would not lock.
bigcam406 2009-02-10, 01:04 AM noticed that as well.sunday none of the major 3 would come in (abc, cbs, nbc) but monday evening very strong signals from all 3,still cant get fox 29 though.im thinking it was because of the strong southerly flow we experienced this afternoon and into the evening.
dsspredator 2009-02-10, 07:19 AM LARGE signal strength jump.
Just the warmer weather.
Wait until summer comes.
