HDTV101 2005-06-24, 02:12 AM WGRZ digital is also from what I found getting hammered at times in Ontario from this Analog station on the same channel. Using my Analog TV tuner I was picking this WYTV on channel 33. This can cause the digital WGRZ on the same channel to get jammed. WYTV runs at 912kW ERP out of Ohio... right across Lake Erie. This might explain why for us in Southern Ontario why WGRZ just all of a sudden goes out... and why it's so problematic.

Thanks for the info! What times of the day (or night?) were you picking up this analogue station? Given the behaviour, I'm also starting to wonder if the signal "level" meter on my Samsung T351 is actually a signal-to-noise indicator rather than level...
stampeder 2005-06-24, 07:49 PM Makes you wonder what it'll be like when there are ice packs on Lk. Ontario, Huron, and Erie.
HDTV101 2005-06-26, 01:53 AM Was scanning around at about 11PM and on analog channel 50 there was some show with some strippers dancing on stage that caught my attention. :p
It was a bit snowy the picture but was still very watchable... when they went to commercial break the station identified it's self as Detroit's UPN station WKBD. I nearly fell off my couch! Later I went and got my camera and took a photo... however the reception has declined somewhat. I'll try and get a better pic if I can.

I found WKBD's website... http://www.upn50.com/
Turning my antenna the other way... about 180* I find I'm receiving WWTI from Watertown, NY.... another great distance!

HDTV101 2005-06-26, 07:22 AM Well first I was receiving an analog station out of Detroit so I started scanning with the antenna pointed that way using the digital OTA receiver. It was trying to lock on 2 channels being 44 and 45. It took awhile and then all of a sudden bam there was WDIV on 45 coming in crystal clear! FCC site reports this station runs 973. kW on channel 45.

Sub channel 4-2 runs a weather map.
Yaamon 2005-06-26, 09:20 AM HDTV that is pretty good. I decided to try the Rochester channels this morning and guess what I get two channels.
WXXI (Pbs) and WUHF (Fox)
I wonder if I should swing the antenna more south or a pre amp like what you would use would pull in the other Rochester channels.

dsspredator 2005-06-26, 09:21 AM Wow nice lock. My Samsung was blinking on 45 too. I thought it was WROC-DT from Rochester.
HDTV101 2005-06-26, 09:35 AM Yes WXXI on 16 and WUHF on 28 are the two easiest Rochester channels to receive. WHEC on 58 and WHAM on 59 are harder and the antenna has to be aimed precisely for them to lock.

WUHF
Yaamon 2005-06-26, 09:41 AM Do you think its becuase of the atmosphere conditions that allow us to pull them in at this time.
Maybe by mid day they will disappear with the hot sun and hudimity too ?
I wonder if a preamp and swining the antenna slightly more south will make these channels more stable.

These 2 Rochester channels come in alot and even when I'm aimed at Buffalo. If you really want to get into playing then get a rotor... they are not that expensive and make things much more fun. I've tested local reception with and without an amp and found it was much better (Buffalo) with using an amp.
The next few days will be a great days for pulling in far away stations, see the Tropo map! http://home.cogeco.ca/~dxinfo/tropo.html
Watch for Syracuse, NY on 54... this one pops up every so often too.
buritto 2005-06-26, 10:00 AM Unfriggin real!
Your about a 3 1/2 to 4 hour car ride from Detroit! I've heard of people in London getting a Detroit feed here and there but not where you live.
Do you still recieve the channel or was it a fluke?
Yaamon 2005-06-26, 10:00 AM Thanks for the tip HDTV.
As long as I can pull in all 4 PBS that is fine as they should run different program than the Buffalo stations.
The networks all carry the same programs on prime time so I cant bother to install a rotor. More work and wires to run.
Can you pull in WB from Buffalo with you setup ?
ryans 2005-06-26, 12:12 PM Summertime is always a great time for DXing for the most part vs. the winter time.
If you can pick up 45...give 58 a whirl (WJBK-DT/FOX Detroit)....its running at the full 1000kW...nothing like seeing "Mugging in Southfield, on FOX" lol :).
Funny thing, the regular Fox transmitter for Analogue is only 100kW...the Digital one is 1000kW!?!...they must have gotten some sort of deal.
Also, for fun, although might be more difficult, at 500kW is WDWB-WB Detroit. Since we know the Buffalo DT transmitter will probably never be operational fully until the Analogue shutdown...might be fun to give that a whirl. Its on Ch21...so you might run into some obstruction from local signals, but its worth a shot.
WXYZ-DT is also a shot at Ch41 - 770kW. ABC Detroit.
This is the #1 reason I like DTV and having an OTA is for the Dxing part...but unfortunately my current setup would not allow for such fun and the wife just isn't too crazy about me having an outdoor antenna on the roof.
If you try it out, let us know what happens, I'd be curious to know if it's possible to pull anything else in.
bigoranget 2005-06-26, 12:38 PM Channels 2-6 can only broadcast at a maximum of 100kW
Channels 7-13 can only broadcast at a maximum of 325kW
Channels 14-69 broadcast at a maximum of 5000kW
UHF channels need a lot more power to cover the same area as a VHF station. The higher the UHF channel gets, the more power that is required.
bigoranget 2005-06-26, 12:41 PM You may also be able to receive cleveland stations as well. I quite often receive WJW-TV (Fox 8) during the summer time with just an indoor antenna

I left my receiver on channel 44 and now I found its memory is showing it locked on WWJ TV and it's remapped to 62-1. This is only a 200 Kw station in Detroit so that’s a good catch. I'll see if I can get a photo of it in action soon.
As for WXYZ if it's on 41 that will be impossible to receive in my area since channel 41 is used by a powerful local channel off the CN tower (Global CIII)

Doh! I forgot about Global...I'm in Hamilton and get Global pretty good on 6 on Analogue (CIII-Paris)...but I rarely if ever see 41...so I completely forgot.
But good work on WWJ...CBS Detroit, did you try out 58? I like to live vicariously through others lol...but its good and fun to have days like this...at least its something different than the same old TV.
HDTV101 2005-06-27, 07:25 AM Really excited about receiving WWNY-TV digital channel 35 from Carthage, NY. This is over 200 miles away! It's a CBS station that uses analog channel 7.
