There was a "band opening" tonight on VHF and UHF frequencies. Atmospheric conditions were such that long-distance signals not normally received were booming in. There are maps out there outlining the propogation pathways.

That probably explains why you received those 3 stations from Rochester. Chances are tomorrow you won't see them.

Also, just wanted to say me and another guy met up with Yaamon today. He wanted a 4228 but it was too big to fit in my car so he's going back tomorrow to get it. I, on the other hand, brought home my new 4221. It'll be going on the ham radio antenna tower I have in the backyard very soon. :)

Last night, from Ottawa, I was getting the following:

3 - A-Channel, Barrie
8 - CBS, Rochester (back and forth, between that station and Cornwall)
10 - NBC, Rochester
17 - PBS, WNED
20 - ABC, ?? (I get this one often, more often than WWTI 50 Watertown!)
27 - Global
29 - Fox, Rochester
31 - Fox, Buffalo

And a whack more! (49, 51, 33, ...)

2 - Global was nice and almost clear

On the DT front, only WWNY and Fox (7-1, 7-2) on channel 35 were coming in at times. Scan was slowing down all over the dial.

I don't understand why you're in the dx forum?

Don't you get all buffalo stations all the time?

IS it normal if I dont get CBS during the day but it usually comes in with a decent signal at night?

Back in business again with skip tonight using the cm 4221 clone.

Seeing channel 2 and 4 in digital from Buffalo (which is nice since there is no local NBC channel for me) along with the usual analogs, 23, 29, 49 and 51. Also seeing Syracuse 5 digital and on analog 24, 43, 56 and 68. Getting 27 from Peterborough strong as well.

hmmm...
it seems my 4221 is getting better with age.
When I first installed it in November, I couldn't get PBS, CBS, or NBC.

by end of November, I got PBS, at first it was poor and never worked in bad weather, few weeks later, it became 100% stable.
around January, I started to get an intermittent signal of CBS, it's gradually gotten stronger and today, I've only had it cut out once.
Last week, I started getting NBC, this week, I'm watching right now and it's become very stable.

no idea why this happens. The antenna installation was extremely stable so I highly doubt it moved... oh well, I'm happy I'm getting all the channels now :) YAYS!

That's the PBS channel from Rochester on broadcasting on channel 16. As the weather warms up and skip activity picks up, you might see some more channels. Last night I was picking up Buffalo channel 2 and 4 in digital from my apartment in Kingston.

The spring cross-lake ducting season is just beginning. Thermal layers build up across the lake as air and water temperatures diverge during the day and night. The temperature layers act as ducts and cause the TV signals to be degraded or enhanced depending on the locations of both the transmitter and receiver. If your antenna is in the same layer (duct) as a transmitter then you might get a great signal from a station you seldom receive for some period of time. On the other hand, if a Buffalo station is in one layer and your antenna is in another you might not get anything at all on a station you received reliably all winter.
Ducting occurs at all frequencies and ducts are frequency selective. You might get ducting on one channel and not on another. Ducting can be so pronounced that you can have the best antenna on the tallest tower and still get no signal.
Good luck with reception.

I guess its duct hunting season (groan) :D

I think you are seeing ducting effects not skip that usually occurs over longer distances. The stations you report are all around Lake Ontario which is notorious for ducting conditions in the spring and fall.

I guess its duct hunting season (groan) :D
and you have to go after them with a 4228 which is just a double barrel version of a 4221.

Would this also affect local reception (eg. CN Tower to Mississauga)?
