: OTA DXing, Tropo, Odd Reception, Weird Weather: 2009 & Previous
987654321 2007-03-12, 08:22 AM Can it skip that far? Thanks.
Not a skip at this distance - it's refraction
Skip would be Ch 2 New Orleans, or Houston, or Miami. I'm not far from you and always get 3/5/8. On nights where refraction is strong, I get 19/23/25/43/55/61 Cleveland.
I never get the ATSC channels as they are all colocated with London area NTSC channels (except Ch3 which is digital on Ch 2)
rob50312 2007-03-31, 06:41 PM RE: CBC HD Toronto March 31: There is some Tropo activity so that might explain your signal as their signal is going elsewhere.
026163 2007-03-31, 07:07 PM really what area do u guys have coming in?
rochester, cleveland, detroit?
rob50312 2007-03-31, 07:37 PM Syracuse area receiving analog 56 crystal clear.
stampeder 2007-04-03, 01:54 PM Here's a book on DXing:

And here's an interesting, basic graphic depiction of atmospheric effects on TV frequencies:

I... can't... stop... looking... at... it...
99gecko 2007-04-16, 03:26 PM Interesting that receiving antenna is pointing "up" ;)
x4mer 2007-04-22, 03:26 AM Could be analog CH 33 from Youngstown OH, causing your problem during times of good weather.
026163 2007-04-22, 12:07 PM see this site. it tells you all the channels within like 200 mile radius of this area, so you can check for any analog/digital stations that could be coming in and interfering

danbcman 2007-04-23, 10:12 AM KCPQ 18.1 in SeaTac is gaining in strenght all morning from 0 at 530am to now at 31 to jumps to 40 % which is nice as it is rarely above 8 to 17% nomally.
eliminator 2007-04-26, 12:24 AM amazing signal tonight.... im using a 4221 and a 10db indoor amp and normally i cant even pick up abc, cbs, pbs, mytv buffalo reliably but tonight not only did i pick up every buffalo station but 3/5 rochester stations popped up... 58 and 59 were detected as well but too weak to lock on... also detected this mysterious signal from 54 but too weak to lock... i looked around and the only 54 i found was syracuse nbc.. could it be?... i mean thats like 300km away... this weekend i will raise the antenna height by about 80cm... pbs and possibly mytv should be reliable all the time after that since i tested that height before... ill post more detailed results after i do it
HDTV101 2007-04-26, 09:09 AM yes syracuse on channel 54 comes in all the time when the weather is right... keep watching that channel it will come in! I've even picked up WWNY-TV digital channel 35 from Carthage, NY. This is over 200 miles away!
Did anyone elae notice that the US stations were pretty strong last night? Usually I can't get the US stuff with the 4221 pointed towards the CN Tower (the only direction I can point it to from the inside of the house). Well last night between 7ish and 11pm the US stuff was coming in pretty well. I was kinda suprised/shocked because it has never done that from that direction. The only thing I could think of was what Stampeder mentioned (the DX thing). After 11 pm the US stations started to fade away. :( At least I was able to watch Lost in HD for the first time. (looked nice). :)
I wish the weather would turn nice again so I can put that antenna up on the roof. (this channel in and out thing is killing me) lol
Btw, geting those US channels (that are around 70 miles away)with the 4221 indoors is pretty impressive imo.
On more thing... I noticed last night that 7.2 popped up on the Sammy before it went bye-bye with the rest of the US stuff. That's a new channel for me. :) Just wondering if 7.2 has always been there or is it new? (I never noticed it there before when I was testing/scanning for the US stations last month)
eliminator 2007-04-26, 08:18 PM wow carthage thats like 400km... ill definitely keep an eye on it... ill keep scanning for channels... the tuner built into my tv wont let me manually check channels without going through a scan and actually finding the channel first with good enough signal... if it finds a channel but is too weak to add it just freezes while scanning for a few seconds... tonight signal is awful... must be the rain... only buffalo station im getting is 23 which always comes in strong no matter what
026163 2007-04-26, 09:20 PM yes syracuse on channel 54 comes in all the time when the weather is right... keep watching that channel it will come in! I've even picked up WWNY-TV digital channel 35 from Carthage, NY. This is over 200 miles away!
ya i don't have any chance getting 35 out of syracuse because of CBS Erie Analog on 35.
Wayne 2007-04-27, 10:54 AM Anyone having trouble with ATSC reception in the last few days. I lost most of my channels last night in foggy/rainy weather. I am in Scarborough almost right on the lake.

yup im getting terrible reception since yesterday.... only picking up buffalo cbs and fox currently stable
Yaamon 2007-04-27, 12:28 PM Normally with wet, misty, foggy conditions you can get reduce signal from Buffalo.
danbcman 2007-04-27, 12:54 PM I was doing a few scans this morning and an unusual thing happened I started getting signal readings for 58.1 and 33.1 strange the weather is grey cloudy wet and yet this is the first time iether station has ever had any activity on it on the ATI HDTV card with a 4228 antenna and a 7777 pre amp this signal is showing jumps from 4% to 41% at its short lived peaks but no lock on yet.
Update 1
Wierd but true there is a crane two blocks away and everytime it turns and stops at the same place I get signal and it even locks unreal but it moves agaim and off it drops then again it swings into the area and the signal returns I can only hope he parks it in that location for the game tonigh at time when it locks I am getting 65% beautiful anyways if I were to inclued this in my atenna list I am sure it world be a record for tv.
Update 2
Well they parked the crane at a place that stops my bounce no HD Hockey tonight
Update 3
yes it is really amazing watching the crane turn and pass into the area which the signal jumps to life on the screen if it stops in the position to do some work then the signal jumps to 65 plus and locks and boom beautiful steady cbc hd tv then as soon as it moves out of the narrow area no signal. It is the strangest thing.
Yaamon 2007-04-28, 09:27 AM danbcman you are getting reflected signals. :)
Pass im a few beers to park the crane your way. :D
kneedfreetv 2007-04-28, 11:10 AM This past rainstorm (Thurs and Fri) that we had, I lost 2-1. Is this normal for 2-1 NBC? Right now it's cloudy and reception is at approximately 40% - 50%. Would adding a pre-amp resolve the problem?
