I currently have a 20" BEV dish with a 3100 receiver. I just bought a 4100 and now that I need to add a cable anyway, i'm considering more upgrades. I'd like to get a SW44 so that I can run a total of 4 cables to get my 2 receivers running + leave the HDTV receiver option open down the road.

In order to get the required 4 cables running into the switch, does it make more sense for me to get a 2nd dish with dual-LMB, or a larger dish with quad LMB? With my current setup I often lose the picture in rain/snow. I am unclear whether 2 20" dishes boost the signal, or if the only way to do this is a larger dish.

Thx for your help!

If you are often losing signal with rain or snow right now, then I would suggest using the 2 dishes when you move to HD. My spider senses tell me you are in Alberta. Myself, when I went to HD I tried setting it up with one dish. It worked, but I found I got a much better signal strength with 2 dishes.

Now, 2 dishes will do nothing right now for you having signal issues on 91. Maybe give us a few examples of transponder strength; like TP 11 and TP18 for example.

One thing you can do for now is run the cables in preperation for getting HD. If you only have 2 receivers right now I'd hold off on buying the switch; you'll get one if you buy a 9200 package.

Since I'd rather not feed power to an SW44, I've decided to just go with a Quad LNB (I have a 5100, and just picked up a 9200, and don't anticipate ever having more than 3 or 4 receivers/tuners). Aside from being able to do 200 ft runs, is there any advantage to going with a DP Quad LNB vs a Legacy Quad?

I am not sure if your 5100 will work with dp equipment.

I thought the 5100 was DP compatable.

mg_gti- the best way to tell for sure is to look at the back of your receiver where the satellite feed goes in. There should be a "DP" logo right there.

I have just installed my 9200 using option #3 but when I first tried I did not have seconded receiver connected and could not get the thing to work at all!!
I would get partial signal on some ports with out hte power inserter, as soon as I connected it I lost all signals.
I was told the switch was bad and I would have to wait 5-7 buiness days for it to arrive, so I went to the loacl dealer and bout an upgrade kit with two sw21 switches cabled them up and bang it worked great. Now I have recieved
the sw44 and tried to connect it back into my system again with out a second rec. but no luck so last night I moved my dual tuner cables down a step on the switch and connected the power inserter into Num1 and it works!!
but now some channels take for ever to load and some not all untill it tries to find the signal. HELP HELP

Yes, the 5100 is DP-compatible (but I'm probably going to be selling it anyway).

Found some info describing the differences between legacy and DP:

Hi there,

I thought I would share my highs and lows of the professional installation of the 9220. Firstly, I took the afternoon off from work and rushed home as the installer was scheduled to come by between 1-4 pm. The installer arrived around 2 pm and proceeded to put together the dish. He stated that he normally checks the line of sight before putting together any hardware, but today he decided to start with some basic prep work inside the house. As this is going on I start to get giddy about finally watching some HD tonight (don't care what). Anyhow, when he goes outside to look at the dish location he realizes that two tall thin douglas firs which border my house and my neighbour is in the line of sight. Luckily my neighbour and I get along extremely well and I see no problem (fingers crossed) being permitted to trim those trees by about 4 feet each. The bad news is that I will have to do it sometime this weekend and the installer is not available to come back until next Wed. afternoon.

I hope all goes well with the installation next Wednesday as I'm dying to watch the opening night NHL games on TSN HD. Does it take long to activate and send all the programming to the sat receiver?

I installed my 9200 this weekend, upgrade dish and all.
Sat 91 comes up no problem, signal strength is 94%.
Sat 82 is not showing up at all.
BEV tech support suggested altering the skew, which I tried for a while, but still 82 doesnt show up. I live in Ottawa, so the skew was originally set up at 100.3, but the BEV guy suggested 98 or so (he said he got that from a third party website - any idea what website?). One strange thing is when I change the skew, I also lose the signal from Sat 91. Why would someone suggest changing the skew to capture the signal from 82 when it would take away my 91? Unless my system is set up wrong...is it possible that my 91 is pointing to the wrong eyepiece?

Look forward to any ideas on how I can get this working.

I have set-up a dish network satellite in the past with a DISH500. In the dish pointing menu you simply choose DISH500 from the drop down and started acquiring your first satellite..then moved to the next. With the BEV 9200, does it have a similar selection? How do you acquire the satellites with a DPP LNB?

Any info appreciated.

No selection required. I did however first disconnect do a check switch to clear out what I had before. Then installed........ran check switch and done.

Due almost entirely to the advice given in this thread, my 9200 is up and running, so far with good reception.
Nimiq 91 has signal strength around 90 and Nimiq is at 82.(TP 11)
The 91 transponders all give acceptable signal strengths, but the following transponders on 82 show zero strength - 6,7,8,9,10,24 & 29. Transponder 4 does not even appear on the Bell listing.
All other transponders on 82 have acceptable readings, and there are no noticeable faults in the tv picture.
Is this typical for Nimiq 82? (I read in this thread that this satellite may have sustained some damage.)

Yes, this is typical for 82. Not all transponders are active on the 82 sat.

Are all RG6 cables created equal?

In other words, will the Home Depot stuff work fine or should I be looking for something "better" (e.g. Belden or equivalent).

The Home Depot product is RCA or Electrohome or whatever and uses aluminum foil shielding. Does the type of shielding matter (aluminum foil vs copper braid)?

Thanks

The Rang,

For what it's worth I wired my basement at my old house with RG6 from Home Depot and it was defective.

I know for a fact I didn't kink it while installing so it must not be handled very carefully when delivered to them.

I use Commscope stuff myself. YOu can tell quality RG6 by the outside diameter.

Thanks Crispy, this confirms my thoughts. Maybe one shouldn't judge a book by its cover but the Home Depot coax "looks" cheap.

Now the challenge is finding someone who will sell me better cable without having to buy a 1000' box.

What about F connectors? Any specific type?

"...without having to buy a 1000' box."

1000' box or roll of decent RG-6 coax is only about $60 (maybe $80 for certain types if you're very particular). In other words, it might even be cheaper to 'cave in' and get the 1000' than trying to avoid it.

I used almost 400' to install my 9200.

I assumed a $1000' roll would run me $150 to $200.

If it's only $60 to $80 then you are right, better to buy the big roll, have extra for another project, and save time and grief looking for smaller amounts.

My dish is only about 15' away from the TV so I figure I need about 100' including a second run into the bedroom.

Vertical angle in Vancouver.

Chart on page I-50 says 23.9

Protractor on page I-53 says 25.9

Anyone know which is correct?

FWIW my old dish was set closer to 25.9 than 23.9 but the mast wasn't 100%plumb

my present configuration is a bell 18" dish with a dual lnb, 2 lines run into the house..one line goes to a 3100 receiver upstairs...the other line goes to a 2800 in the 3rd level.
i will be receiving the 9200 this week to replace the 2800.
now my question is referring to the illustration in the first option of the first thread, to make this setup work the most effeciently for me and the less hassle, could i purchase a dishproplus twin lnb and also a dishpro plus separator hook up the line to the 3100 to one output of the lnb, then hook up the line to the 9200 to the lnb, run the 9200 line to the dpp separator, then run these 2 lines out of the separator to the 9200? this way i have only the 2 lines still running into my house. someone said in an ealier thread this configuration will not work?
is this confirmed? please advise.
also right now i have a DISHPRO DISH NETWORK PRO DUAL TWIN LINE LNB
as seen in this link:
http://cgi.********/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5815678568&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
would this lnb work for me? rather than purchasing the dishpro plus twin lnb...
