: CSR Ottawa Repeater NOW on
becks 2005-11-10, 08:00 AM The Ottawa XM repeater is back on the air today. It has a much lower bit error rate from my office so maybe it is their new 24/7 repeater ?
What part of town is your office located in?
Kieran 2005-11-10, 09:10 AM Becks,
I commute from Almonte to the Gatineau everday and XM works great. At the moment, I am listening to XM from my office using the indoor home antenna beside a south facing window. It is low-e glass so the sat signal cannot get through but the repeater is strong enough to make a useful signal at a BER of 2.5%. At home I get no repeater signal but full sat signal and a BER of 0.0%. Now here is the important one...at the Tims and Home Depot on Baseline, I can use my Myfi indoors when the repeater is on...coffee, hardware and XM

So your office is in Gatineau? I'm just wondering the range of the repeater. I have XM and Sirius and both work great in the car, but I'm wondering about in-office reception using the repeater.
wysiwyg 2005-11-10, 07:32 PM I'm curious, for the MyFi, what sort of antenna is required to receive the groud transmiters? I check every day in Toronto and get nothing. I even tried right at King and Bay and got nothing either.. Does it need to have the headphones hooked up and the wire serves as an antenna?
Kieran 2005-11-10, 07:56 PM The internal antenna for the Myfi is a patch antenna built into the top of the radio. You do not have to add any other antenna to receive the repeater other than the built in. The repeaters may not be on yet in Toronto. I have heard that the Montreal repeaters are also up and operational.
To check, go to the "aim aiming" sub menu and see if there is a terrestial signal. Today I was able to listen to XM while in a supermarket. I got ZERO sat signal but a good terrestial signal.

Any idea where the Vancouver repeater(s) will be located?
HornHonker 2005-11-11, 02:45 AM I hear there is a possible problem with an old railway data link getting clobbered in tests. I'm sure they will work around it but there may be a delay.

Is this in the vancouver area?

This might be a dumb question but how far of a range is there on the repeaters? I'm in Winnipeg and wonder if I'll be able to get the repeater signal out in the suburbs.

lilpuddin 2005-11-12, 12:06 PM Instead of a whole new thread, just wondering people's experience with reception in Calgary right now?
Ideally after research, i'd have an Xm2Go unit to use on the commute, use at the office, and have at home.
Home: Have a window thats facing south but being a split level house, its low..like ground level. Will antenna work being at ground level like that?
Commute: I assume that I should be driving around town with an antenna, and not experince too much loss?
Work:Window office with no tall buildings south of me to obstruct (I'm on 9th Ave), facing ESE. Would likely use an antenna too.
Thanks for any experiences you have in Calgary.
Love my XM2Go, and it works most places in Calgary except the downtown core. Ground level isn't going to be a problem, but be careful of two things: trees and some energy efficient windows. I couldn't get a signal through Petro-Canada Tower's windows. ESE is the best direction though.
Kieran 2005-11-14, 08:57 PM I noticed today that the signal in Hull/Gatineau/Aylmer has increased from "one bar" on my XM2go to "three bars". Either they changed the antenna pattern (but the rest of my commute remains unchanged) or maybe a 2nd repeater just got activated :p

Sorry Chris not sure what the range of the repeater will be but should definately be strong enough to broadcast the signal within the Perimeter area. If you're further out than that then you won't need the repeater signal as coverage from the satellite will be more than sufficient. I find that my signal only blocks out when I'm in the downtown area - in all other areas of Winnipeg I receive an excellent signal and that is without the repeater being active yet.
chris 2005-11-15, 12:56 AM Thanks for the response, I'm thinking of investing in a MyFi and was worried about coverage while using it in the house and also when travelling along some heavily tree lined routes. I noticed in the CRTC application they are planning for three more repeaters in the city, one in the St. Boniface Industrial park area, one in the SW area near Lindenwoods and in the Maples/NW region which should give all parts of the city good coverage.

I wouldn't hold my breath for those extra repeater Chris. At the retail training session in Winnipeg a couple of weeks ago, they only made reference to the one on the Radisson and implied that it would be more than sufficient to cover the city.
On a different note, discovered this week that my magnetic antenna on the roof of my car still pulls in an excellent signal with several inches of snow/ice on it!
