FutureShop have New 80GB HDD/DVD Recorder "LG LRH-780" at 387$

Do you have more information on this model ?
Does it have the same problems as the LG LRH-539 or the Zenith ZRH-516 !!!

Good news everyone!

Firmware version 60223B_NT has already been made and it's uploaded by default on the new digital boards.
Unfortunately the firmware itself is not available for download yet but should be available very soon.

Well I played around and if you press the right arrow at the beginning of a commercial, it does skip forward to the beginning of the show again. HOWEVER, it is not accurate all the time. This must be because it doesn't always pick up the beginning and end of the commercials. I noticed the the HDD icon doesn't always show up.

Anyways, it is easier skipping forward and then rewinding 20 seconds than it is to fast forward through 2 minutes of commericials.
What's all this then? Has anyone else seen this behaviour? I don't think I've ever seen the HDD icon pop-up during playback.

Timmer, can you provide any more details that might help us recreate what you're seeing? That would be one helluva cool undocumented feature!

Hmmm... page 29 of the ZRH-516 manual says (under the Instant Skip section):

"In HDD playback or Timeshift mode, each press < / > skips forward or reverse 5 minutes."

("< / >" represents the arrow buttons.) I wonder if that's all this is? Still, that doesn't explain why the HDD symbol is popping up....

The other day, as I was wandering around Future Shop wondering how best to address my 4:11/audiosync/recording interruption issues, I noted that they were selling an LG LRH790 model which also had a 250GB HDD. Obviously, given the higher model number, this model must work better than the LRH-539 ;) ?? The specs for each seem to be the same, evne the price ($599).

Does anyone have any information about the 790 model? Does it address some of these irritating 539 issues?

Thanks.

Don't know, but I found this: http://ca.lge.com/en/prodmodeldetail.do?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=0304&categoryId=0304&parentId=03&modelCodeDisplay=LRH-790&unit=NOTHING&model=Select+a+model

Or maybe try this link (not sure if it's the same): http://ca.lge.com/en/prodmodeldetail.do?catModel=3&actType=&modelName=&currentPage=&categoryId=0304&parentId=03&modelCategoryId=0304&modelCodeDisplay=LRH-790&modelNameLoc=LRH-790&modelImgNum=1&enlarge=%2Fen%2Fdown%2Fproduct%2F0304%2FLRH-790%2FLRH-790F_large.jpg

I can see that at least the 790 has svideo jack in the back. I saw that the other model only had it in the front, which would look like crap. It does cost $100 more than the other unit, so maybe there is more things fixed (like fast forwarding divx.)

The user guide for the new models is now available on the LG Canada site, and there doesn't appear to be any hugely compelling reasons to upgrade if you already have a ZRH-516 or LRG-539 (unless you want an upconverting DVD player). Here's what I've noticed so far....

Improvements:
1) Separate HDD/DVD mode buttons on remote
2) Ability to Fast Forward / Rewind DivX material
3) Ability to Time Slip (enter Time Shift mode) in the middle of a normal HDD recording
4) DVD upconversion via HDMI out. (790 model only. And from all the notes in the user's guide, it sounds like the HDMI implementation is still quite buggy.)

Unresolved "deficiencies":
1) No S-Video In connector on the back panel
2) Can't fast copy (lossless dub) edited material from HDD to DVD
3) Can't use timer recordings unless the unit is turned off
4) Can't play DivX files directly from memory cards (you can't even copy DivX files from memory cards to the HDD)

The UI is virtually identical to the previous generation except for the "Home" menu.

I just got off the phone with LG Canada and they said they will be mailing me out the new firmware today and I should receive it in a few days (60223B). They person I spoke with said that it will resolve the 4:11/audiosync/recording interruption issues. They said that less than 1 second audiosync is normal but more than 1 second is considered a malfunction. They were very friendly and helpful. I hope this works. I haven't really had any time to play with the unit (just got it from Future shop last week for 299.99 OPEN BOX - No REMOTE) so I can't say that I had any problems yet, but I probably will, so I will upgrade the firmware just to be sure.

The phone number is 1-888-LGCANADA

Hey, awesome! Can you post it somewhere once you get it? Or e-mail it to me and I'll post it somewhere?

Good News !!! :D

I have just received the update of the firmware 60223B_NT from LG Canada.

If somebody can distribute it on line to the other users of the forum, I will send a copy by email with the upgrade procedure.

I was the one that posted the 4:11 problem when I noticed it and haven't been back in a while to check up on it.

I'm glad that LG finally owned up to a problem. I ended up at a service centre 2 times then ended up backing up the drive and formatting it. I have since been carefull to not fill the drive too much.

Nothing like missing the last show in a series by 20 minutes and calling around to friends to see if anyone has it saved somewhere.

Good work by everyone BTW for continuing the discussion. What would we do without each other ??? Probably go postal on places like Futureshop :D

Thanks in advance

I installed the firmware. Installation went fine. However, you MUST use a CD-R. The CD-RW that LG sent me with the firmware didn't do anything in the drive. I haven't had time to test is the firmware 60223B_NT fixed anything but I will post here if there are any problems.

I sent the firmware to members who will post it for everyone to download.

Happy Recording
Dave

Here you go guys,
Thanks to mistersafety for sending me the file.

Like before, please don't abuse, I have limited bandwidth.
I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but from previous info, the 4:11 bug have been fixed since firmware 60126A.
