...the fact that the Zenith can't fast-forward a divx file. Does this firmware upate change that?
Nope. It doesn't let you fast-dub edited material either, which is the one I was hoping for. If you read this whole thread, you'll find a post that lists the things that, by LG's own admission, will NEVER be changed by a firmware update.

Aha, I saw that afterwards.

So I'm not seeing any real reason for me to use the firmware update unless I'm experiencing the time glitch or something. My machine is working fine. Is there any other reason for me to update it? Other than the nifty LG logo of course. ;)

Hi Guys:

On Apr 15 I filled out the online customer service form on the LG Canada site. I explained the 411/4141 timer problem I was having with my LRH-539 recorder. I asked about a firmware upgrade and said I really didn’t want to take my machine in for servicing. On Apr 17 I received an email from LG. It had a firmware file attached to it. Unfortunately the firmware was version 50617B_NT.
I am currently using the 51214B firmware that I got from you guys. I still have the 411/4141 problem, but not as often. I would say that the 51214B firmware is an improvement. Thanks again guys.

Today I sent another inquiry to LG Canada. This is what I received:

-----------Original Customer Enquiry------------
Received Date : 4/21/2006 13:05:05
The type of inquiry : Software/Hardware updates
Product/Model No. : DVD&VIDEO&SET TOP/LRH-539

On Apr 15 I sent you an inquiry about my LRH-539 recorder. I am having trouble with timer recording to the hard disk. At times, the recording stops at 4:11 or 41:41 minutes. I asked about new firmware. On Apr 17 I received a reply with an attachment containing a firmware upgrade. It was version 50617B_NT. That is the version that is already on my machine. I was curious if you have any newer firmware. The Scandinavian LG site has firmware versions 51214A and 60126A for their RH7xxx series recorders. Can I try those firmwares, or are they just for PAL format recorders? On the European forums they are having the same recording trouble that I have. They claim that firmware version 60126A fixes their problem. Thank you for your help and the firmware that you sent me.

-----------Reply to Customer Enquiry------------
The chipset in the scandanavian players are different it will not work on your player. We currently only have this firmware available. This issue however has been submitted to the factory. They are working on a new firmware for the Canadian market. We unfortunately don't have an ETA yet on the release of this firmware. When available we will post it on our website. Thanks for your inquiry LG Electronics Canada inc.

I still have questions. Where does 51214B fit into all of this? Hothersale and dougtheslug both wound up with it. The file is the exact same size as 50617B_NT (5,270 KB). 51214A is 5,502 KB. 60126A is 5,506 KB.
It sounds like LG may help us at some time. For now, I’ll stay with 51214B. It seems to cause me less trouble. Thanks again everybody.

Arghhh!!!

I had never lived this problem of recording (4:11) before making the update with the version 51214B on my ZRH-516. Now there are 1 on 3 of my recording programmed which has this problem.

It is really frustrating !!! :(

Somebody would have the original Firmware version of ZRH-516 (50328A_NT)

At least, I did not have a problem of recording with this old version.

I reinstalled version 50617B_NT to see whether it is better.

I wonder whether it would be preferable to format the hard disk after having installed an update !!!

No news since April 22? Does anybody have an update on the latest firmware?

Does anybody have a list of the features included in this firmware upgrade? Also, does anyone have a list of service codes? I know the one for unlocking the regions, found here: http://www.dvd-unlock.co.uk/index.php?entry=entry051110-171157

I've upped to the 51214B and had momentary success against the 4:10/41:40 problem but now it's coming back. Hopefully, the new firmware will fix this problem.

Well, I received the update (51214B ) from Lg Canada afetr asking for the latest version and of course it didn't solve the freezing problem. When I called them back, some b*tc* with an attitude said "that's the latest".
She wouldn't say if the newer version for Canada is in development.
Does anyone have any other info?

[QUOTE=furball69]Well, I had to drive 180 miles round trip to find one, but it was worth it. I took the LG back and picked up the Pioneer DVR-633H-S. Drove all over town this morning looking for one and everyone is sold out..

Why are the dvd recorders (esp. Pioneers ones) sold out at Future Shop and Best Buy? All that was left were open box ones last week now even those are gone. Are they getting rid of them to get ready for blue ray HD DVD ?

I suspect the Pioneers seemingly sell more because of better functionality. My first recorder was a Pioneer (since stolen) and I loved the fact that I didn't have to turn it off to do a timer record. Also, you could timeslip in the middle of a timer record. These are two features sorely lacking in LG's LRH-539 model. Plus, I believe there is a S-Connector on the back of the Pioneers.
Having said that, firmware upgrades on the Pioneer were difficult to say the least. You had to have a special Pioneer remote (difficult to obtain) to do them.

Hello All,

I am new to this forum. I just purchased an LRH-539 from the future shop yesterday. I started to do some research online and ran across this forum. I recorded a 3 hour movie and sure enough had the audio/video sync problem. I loaded the firmware, reformated the hard drive, and so far have not had another problem. However, I didn't want to take a chance so I called LG and they are emailing me the "latest" firmware. The technician (who seemed to know what he was talking about) said that this patch will fix the problem, so with fingers crossed I wait for the CD and hope that it is the latest and greatest.

Thanks to all in this forum. I found it most informative. I feel bad for those of you who had to go through all the growing pains so that newer purchasers, like myself, can reap the benefits. I simply hope that a firmware patch will truely fix the problem.

I have 30 days (now 29) before I am stuck with this thing. I bought it from the future shop so I have the "grace" period. I couldn't pass up the deal. There were five, yes five, open box returns. The guy said that people were returning them because they couldn't figure out how to use them. Come on...it isn't that hard to use. I figured there had to be a glitch but was up for some fun so I tried to bargain with the guy. I live in Canada. The unit was on sale marked down from 699 to 599. Open box so I got him to take another 100 off. Down to 499. Then I backed out at the last second and said that with the tax I couldn't afford it. He knocked off another 50 bucks. In the end I paid 449 plus tax. For that price I'll try to get this thing working until noon on the 30th day. Then, and only then, if there isn't a fix, I will return it. Then again, if I can only use half the drive space, it is still pretty good at 125 MB for 450 bucks.

If the patch is newer than the one posted when it arrives, I'll find a way to spread the wealth.

Thanks again to everyone's insight.

I just got the unit and am playing with it. Here are a few things

Unit takes a "long time" to boot up.
Response to remote seems to be slow
No "record every day" feature
No 30 second commercial skip
Can't give a name for the show when setting up the recording
Can't watch one show and record another at the same time

Other than that I find the record quality to be very good.

Future Shop has a new unit coming in July

IS there a unit out there with a drive as big as this one, that has two tuners, therby allowing one to timeshift on one channel and record on another?

That doesn't cost 2000 bucks.

Because if that is the case I'll just buy a second DVR.

[QUOTE=z0z0]I just got the unit and am playing with it. Here are a few things

No "record every day" feature

No 30 second commercial skip

Can't watch one show and record another at the same time

Item 1: When setting the recording time, move backward on the date settings. You will see "every Monday... Monday to Friday... etc. Crazily, this is undocumented in the Manual!

Item 2: Underneath the slip out cover is a button labeled "iskip" this will skip in 15 second increments.

Item 3: You cannot do timeslip in a Timer Recording. However, if you have the latest firmware upgrade, you can watch a pre-recorded program while recording another at the same time. Remember NO timer recording for it to work this way.

Cheers

Has anyone noticed that the HDD icon shows up in the upper right hand corner at exactly the same time that a show breaks for commercials and then does the same thing when the show comes back on? I thought this was just a fluke the first few times but as I analysed this (while watching survivor:p ) I noticed that the HDD showing up was very systematic and always at the precise moment that a commercial started and the show came back on. I can’t recall if this only happens during timeshift, during regular live TV, and during recording. I know for sure that it happens during recording.

If this is occurring, I wonder if there is an index that is created that could be utilized to instantly skip commercials?

I watched for the Commercial Skip that you speak of and using manual record and on a number of channels I did not see the HD icon. I have the latest firmware. I am on Rogers regular cable.

The unit is going back to Best Buy. The fact that you can't fast forward through AVI files is absurd. What happens if you have to stop watching a file half way through and then want to resume where you stopped? Ouch.

So far the best solution for me is the PVR computer in basement network connected to modded XBox in family room.

Maybe I will try the Toshiba RD-XS35

Well I played around and if you press the right arrow at the beginning of a commercial, it does skip forward to the beginning of the show again. HOWEVER, it is not accurate all the time. This must be because it doesn't always pick up the beginning and end of the commercials. I noticed the the HDD icon doesn't always show up.

Anyways, it is easier skipping forward and then rewinding 20 seconds than it is to fast forward through 2 minutes of commericials.

I've recently purchased the LRH-539 DVD/HDD Player/Recorder and every once in awhile I get the audio/video sync problem. I've noted that people on this forum have obtained a firmware patch from LG to resolve this problem. Can anyone tell me whether I must order this patch from LG directly by phone or can it be downloaded online, and if so, from where?
