Elite 09 2005-06-02, 02:48 PM I am a horror movie fan but only two got to me. As a kid it was Jason. Don't remember which installment it was but when he went to the kids camp and was standing by the beds the kids were sleeping on.....wow. I had nightmares for months on that. Just thinking of opening my eyes and seeing that hockey mask.
The other one was the Blair Witch Project. I don't get scared in movies as I usually can predict what will happen, but Blair Witch was a totally different horror and I was on the edge of my seat in the theatre and still now at home. That ending was scary. I don't like to camp, and I like it even less now.

The opening scene from When a Stranger Calls is genuinely creepy (clearly it was the inspiration for the opening scene from Scream) but, I found the rest of the movie became progressively boring and dragged after that. I think it falls apart shortly after and could not keep its momentum going.
A remake of When a Stranger Calls is also, apparently in the works.

Personal memories of Jeff Wayne's (rock) musical version of 'War of the Worlds' came to mind when I read your comment -- Richard Burton did the narration on that one. I had this lp version (record, words, and some fantastic art!!), and must admit, the story and music still evoked much of the 'scariness' of the original.
I see on 'amazon.ca' that it's about to be re-released this month (21 June). Maybe for memories sake, I'll have to consider catching it?
RNAChemist 2005-06-02, 08:51 PM I just thought of another that was particularly bad for me: The elephant man. I saw the DVD at HMV one day and just looking at the back cover gave me the willies.
Nanuuk 2005-06-02, 10:07 PM Actually, the first movie to give me nightmares was the Forbidden Planet with Leslie Nielson, Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis. Petty good special effects too.
Damnit 2005-06-02, 10:14 PM How about the changling..........i think it was filed in canada
technut 2005-06-02, 11:41 PM Just about any David Cronenberg (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000343/) movie!

The War of the Worlds will be released as hybrid SACD, so I'd definitely recommend getting it for hi-rez stereo and multichannel presentations. There will also be a 7 disk limited edition boxset for die-hard fans and serious collectors:

I have the CD. Special ordered it from HMV a few years ago. Doesnt have the same impact it did when I was a kid, but brought back some memories.
RNAChemist 2005-06-03, 01:57 AM I just looked at that link and followed through to amazon.ca, looks like that 7 disk 5.1DD remastered set will cost $130 CDN. Thats a bit expensive I think, definately for the die hard fans.
Just about any David Cronenberg (http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0000343/) movie!
You know what I think you might be right. :) I remember being kinda freaked out by Shivers and The Brood (especially The Brood).

johnp'in'bc 2005-06-04, 07:27 PM I agree. I would sure like to see Cronenberg do his interpretation of J.G. Ballard's novel 'High Rise'. That book really bothered me, and I can't think of anyone who would do it more justice on screen than him!!
The Rang 2005-08-07, 03:57 PM The original "13 Ghosts" from the early 60's.
There was a scene where this ghostly vapour comes through a vent. While this is happening a kid is about to get crushed as the top half of a bunkbed lowers on him as he lays trapped on the bottom.
Recently bought the DVD for old times sake. Still kind of creepy.
MitchM 2005-08-08, 11:14 AM The Exorsist, I saw in the theatre when it came out in the 70's, I was totally freaked out for months and months...
I saw The Exorcist first in the theatre too. Stood in line in the cold (the lineups were HUGE) to see it and thought about all the news reports I'd heard of people fainting in the aisles and being carried out to the theatre lobby where doctors and nurses attended to them. The hysteria surrounding this movie was nearly as scary as the movie itself. I remember sleeping (or trying to sleep) with my bedroom light on that night! :o
The Blair Witch Project was another that sent chills up my spine. I knew absolutely nothing about the movie before buying the DVD and so was really taken in by the prospect that this actually happened. Most of my friends hated the movie, but I thought it was excellently done.
QuickSilver 2005-08-08, 01:00 PM Blair Witch for me. I watched this movie by myself when it first hit DVD. I lived on the shore of a lake in a huge house. Looking after for the summer for some friends. I started the movie at around 12am. I had my 2 golden retreivers with me in the basement in the home theater room. Took the usual precautions for a horror movie...food...pre movie pee break and a blanket. The movie scared the crap out of me. After it was over I was actually sweating. Then teh dog's barked at something out the patio window. I actually screamed....and loud. No matter what peopel say about that movie....it stopped me from camping for a whole summer and winter and I still get willy's when I think about the house at the end.
jaazzman 2005-08-10, 03:52 PM Showgirls...absolutely terrifying.
johndoublej 2005-09-09, 05:40 PM But see gremlins 1 when you're 6-7 years old, that scared the hell out of me, couldn't sleep without all the covers and stuffed toys in the house pulled up over me!
