schoenbe 2010-11-02, 01:30 PM I haven't really tried many different positions for the DB-2. Its current position give us great signal strength for Télé-Québec. If you all really predict another winter of 50cm+ snow on our roof tops, then I'll have to go up there again and play with the height of the DB2. I'll give it a try and place it just under the DB-8, and determine if it interferes with the DB-8.
stampeder 2010-11-02, 01:58 PM It doesn't have to snow as much as that for it to build up on a reflector. The next thing you know its buried even if there's only a couple of inches on the ground.
Maxwedge 2010-11-11, 05:46 PM Here is what I have going on. Dual old school 4228's, CM Pre-amp all mounted at 85'.
Works pretty darned good!

Jase88 2010-11-11, 06:41 PM Maxwedge: How did you assemble the tower? Is that a satellite dish at the top, or terrestrial internet?!
Maxwedge 2010-11-11, 07:21 PM I had my local TV tower guy put it up. He is a retired North York Hydro linesman - hence the screw-in cable rods he used.
The man is 77 years old and a big fellow to boot. He just put it up a section at a time. He said he would climb anything as long as he knows it is sturdy and safe. I think the new tower and install was just below 2 grand. A good investment to get rid of my dial-up alone.
The dish on top is my Xplornet internet. I have no cable on my street so I wanted to be sure I had LOS to the their tower. I removed my old 40 foot tower and 4228 and added a second 4228 to put on my new tower. Yaamon rigged them up and the TV tower man put them up. Yaamon and I both stood by and watched because we both knew there was no way in He#^ we were going up there! :p
Funny as a kid, I used to run up my parents tower to fix the old flat cable with no fear.....now - not so much!
goforit 2010-11-11, 07:34 PM Awesome pics!
I thought for that height you had to go with the DMX towers, but now I know. Makes me want to add a section to mine- just got to find an old hydro guy in Hamilton. ;)
Cheers!
Maxwedge 2010-11-11, 08:18 PM I thought the same thing - but with the proper anchorage and support a standard tower works great. That baby does not move - even in high winds.
stampeder 2010-11-11, 10:27 PM Nice job, Maxwedge - between the hydro retiree and Yaamon that's a great team! What brand of tower is that? Not a Delhi from what I can tell of the top section.
Maxwedge 2010-11-12, 08:25 AM Thanks Stampeder - All I did was supply the vision and the money!
I was lucky to be able to hide it (except for the top part) in that clump of trees.
I don't remember on the tower brand but I'll try and find out.
It performs very well - According to TVFool I shouldn't be getting a third of what I am receiving. I am not getting Ion though - probably could with a slight re-aim to the west but I don't want to bugger up any of the existing channels - so it is staying where it's at! Wife is very happy with the present lineup.
mom2teens 2010-11-13, 10:35 PM My setup is not anything impressive as an 85' tower but here it is. The antenna I have mounted and now aimed at buffalo is 3/4 of the width of my house. I am glad it is behind the house and pretty well hidden from the street.
I can't get them to show so here are the links

hoopitup2000 2010-11-14, 01:03 AM My new set-up with extended 91XG. Seeing a noticeable improvement on marginal stations. A real multipath killer.

Jase88 2010-11-14, 04:22 PM mom2teens: Some of us have towers because we need them, unfortunately. If I could get away with a more affordable roof-top setup, I would. What impresses me is the ability to save money...and if your modest rig enables you that, then I am impressed. ;)
I'm curious though: I see a tower with a similar (CM Crossfire?) antenna, and the second antenna on your chimney. Is the tower mount not available to you? Or does it belong to another neighbour?
mom2teens 2010-11-14, 08:59 PM They are both mine. I have them aimed and am using 2 cable and have one connected to an RCA tuner and one to my tv because they are different and if I need to change the aiming I can't if I put them both on the tower. The rotor on the tower is shot and I would have to hire someone to fix so I opted for this option as a try since we were able to do the work so far ourselves. Not sure how happy I am with it other than I am getting 51 solid now. The rest is not working well possibly due to the crazy weather we have been having. I had blazing TV yesterday when I was aiming and when I got all the cables run it was all gone. And now with the ladder down and put away it will have to stay like that for the winter.

Ripped my play structure temporary setup, now it's up on the roof with a slope tripod.
5 ft slope tripod
CM7777 (set for separates, FM trap enabled)
CM rotor
CM4228HD
Quad shield coax running to surge arrestor before it enters the house.
I hooked a cable to the VHF input and it's dangling near my soffit for a futur attic VHF antenna install.
Sadly, i think i'll need to go back up there to unscrew some of the 3 1/2 inch lag bolts which did not find a truss when I screwed, even though the stud finder was seeing something in the area. I may have missed by just a bit. A 2x4 backing should fix that.
I've been getting WNYF since last night, up to this afternoon, no breaks.

goforit 2010-11-15, 07:48 PM Nice pics.
You want to remove the black caps/covers in the centre of the bow ties- might give you a little more gain.
stampeder 2010-11-15, 09:53 PM Good job - I hope the cops caught that dude in the blue toque who was trying to steal your tripod! :D
flavoie 2010-11-15, 11:50 PM You want to remove the black caps/covers in the centre of the bow ties- might give you a little more gain.
I've heard the suggestion before, but not yet heard of anyone removing these caps and seeing a difference on a 4228HD, so while I did consider it, I was not too keen on it, especially considering my hack measurements failed for my holy grail channel 18 and I had to revert the antenna back to stock. Now that it's up there, it may be hard for me to reach out this high... at this roof inclination !
Thanks for your input :D

I wonder if I could save myself a trip to the roof by unscrewing the lag bolts which didn't find a truss from the attic with a vise grip, then maybe tap on it when there is very little thread left, or make a pre-hole in my 2x4 backing so I can install the 2x4 in place with the bolt still slightly inside the attic. Upon arriving on the roof on a single visit, I could either discard the lag bolt for a new one, or just rescrew it back in, then waterproofing back done. One visit to the roof to unscrew the bolts avoided... ?
Right now I am only sure that the base went into a truss solid. 1 leg is surely not in a truss, and the 2nd leg I just don't know, my generous helper took care of this one.
Jase88 2010-11-16, 07:20 PM Did you end up using the same shorter lags, or did you get longer ones?
