Does either the original Xbox or Xbox 360 play DVDs with progressive scan?

I have read that the 360 will.

The original Xbox does not and i'm 99% sure that the 360 will.

While I don't have a direct quote to back this up, J Allard has mentioned that the Xbox 360 would have "the best DVD player" and thus it is a very safe assumption that it will support progressive scan but an assumption on my part none the less. What I am more curious about is whether or not it will act as an "upconverter" (video conversion of 480p signal to 720p/1080i) like some DVD players on the market (ie: Samsung DVD-HD850) or would that require an HDMI connection, something not likely to be available right away for the Xbox 360.

There is no HDMI or DVI on the 360.

There is no HDMI or DVI on the 360.

My question was whether or not HDMI was needed for upconversion.

As for no HDMI on the 360, I said that it would not likely be available right away (at launch). However it is not out of the question. Please see below.

This quote is taken directly from an interview conducted at www.teamxbox.com:

http://interviews.teamxbox.com/xbox/1190/Xbox-360-Interview-Todd-Holmdahl/p1/

All those connections (composite, component, s-video and VGA) have one thing in common: they carry the video signal in an analog format. What about digital connections such DVI or HDMI? Will there be A/V packs with DVI and/or HDMI connections? If not, will you consider offering that in the future?

Todd Holmdahl: Xbox 360 will support HD component video output, which is compatible with nearly every HD-ready TV on the market today. We’re poised to hit the sweet spot of the HD market at launch and as the market matures, and we will provide an HDMI for our customers when it makes sense. The reality is, you don’t need HDMI for HD gaming.

go to www.planetxbox360.com they have an artical saying the 360 will have HDMI and if I read it right it says your tv must support HDMI to get true HD gaming so why are they telling us else where component is HD and is needed for HD gaming.

From their article I quote:

There are DVI to HDMI converters but doing this conversion causes some color issues as well as possibly downgrading HD resolution.

Frankly, i dont believe the author was fully educated on HD and ways of getting HD. The DVI to HDMI converters are not active. It is a passive converter that just changes the location of pins.... his statement is equal to saying using a DB25 to DB9 converter will mess up your serial communication or alter the baud rate.

I wouldnt trust what the author said.

Just changing the topic slightly, Future Shop is now taking pre orders for the Xbox 360. They claim 50 will be available today (they may already be gone) and that 10 more will be made available every day until September 8th.

Its the premium bundle, $499.99. No games are forced with this bundle. That likely won't be the case as we get closer to launch. I'm using Future Shop's PSP pre orders as an example. The base model started things off but soon it was available only with a game (Gretzky, Wipeout, etc.).

Just thought I'd pass this along. My apologies if this has been covered in another 360 thread.

Thanks for the info Hazzard, does anyone else know of any prices bundled with or without games?

Where did you get this information? I spoke with reps at 2 Future Shops in Calgary and they both said they have yet to recieve any information about pre-orders and are not yet taking them.

It's on there website.

I don't buy it as it says that you get the VGA adapter as part of the Premium bundle which is NOT part of the bundle.

I found it on the site. Says it also comes with the 20GB Hard Drive. Not sure if this is a good deal or not. I wonder if it will have built in Media Center Extender capabilities to connect to my MCE 2005 computer.

It does. Thats one of their big selling points (stream audio & video from your Media Center PC to your Xbox 360).

Also, while the price of the premium bundle may suggest its not a good deal, its actually a pretty fair price and this is probably as good as you're going to get before Christmas.

I hope it supports more formats than my xbox with the extender software I paid 100 dollars does.
