: Official Star Choice HD Programming Discussion
BSmithern 2005-05-06, 03:11 PM Thus TSN is a high priority. Along with probably Global Toronto perhaps.
I don't see either of these being a high priority for *C at this time. Again, *C does not want to commit HD channels full time to channels that are not HD full time like this. There also is no need whatsoever for *C to add Global Toronto. They carry nothing that you cannot already get on the *C omnibus HD channels.

TSN would be a high priority for Star Choice. Global.......never. That channel has no purpose on the air. Waste of bandwith. I hope Star Choice never adds Global.
TSN is a must. They just applied to show non sports shows (ESPN HD Made Movies, etc) and they are the only Canadian channel to see CFL and NFL (Sunday Night) in HD. Star Choice has to offer this channel. It is the one HD channel on Rogers and Bell that Star Choice really needs. CTV, Global, not as important as TSN.
BSmithern 2005-05-06, 04:05 PM Yes, but *C merely wants to offer the HD content from TSN and not have a dedicated station and BGM will not allow them to do this. Sounds like a standoff to me. Much the same as the Jim Shaw/CHUM standoff.

Very very true. But why would TSN agree to that? There is no reason too. They don't make any $$$ that way. Get a dedicated channel and you make some $$$ on subscriptions. No brainer for TSN.
Us Star Choice customers should consider ourselves pretty lucky that we get as much HD as we do. With dedicated channels, we would not see near as much if we remained at 9 HD channels.

Just what I was told. :p

TSN could do exactly what they do for SD - own their own transponder. Yes, it's Bell company Netstar that owns ku transponder 18 on F1. All TSN has to do is send a P.O. to Bell sister company Telesat and they would have their DCII HD signal available.
So the real bottom line is that the Omnibus channel argument put forth by BGM is a crock. What is really happening is that SC and Cancom cable customers are not prepared to pay BGMs asking price for TSNHD.
Miles 2005-05-12, 08:09 AM Does anyone still get drop-outs on the HD channels? I have a 401/201 combo and when trying to watch HD during the evening I frequently get drop-outs with CBS and NBC programming.... it doesn't seem to happen w/ Sportsnet, ABC, FOX or PBS much at all...
satellite 2005-05-12, 11:44 AM Not frequently. Audio seems to cut out but that happens more often on commercials than during the actual show. Some nights its really bad and picture will cut out too, but lately its been excellent.
digitaldude 2005-05-12, 12:01 PM NBC Detroit got dumped in favour of NBC Buffalo due to poor signals.
I've started to notice CBS Seattle dropping a bit as well.
Unfortunatly, these all appear to be broadcaster related.
I was able to verify the same defects independently on another TV system using different equipment and provider.
BSmithern 2005-05-12, 01:40 PM NBC Detroit got dumped in favour of NBC Buffalo due to poor signals.
Uh, no. Last night watching Law and Order it was NBC Detroit. I have yet to see Buffalo. The video and audio dropped out about 8 times during the hour.
It seems to mostly happen with NBC and I know it is not *C, but it is getting annoying.
Nels Stewart 2005-05-12, 05:11 PM So the real bottom line is that the Omnibus channel argument put forth by BGM is a crock.
Maybe so, but the CRTC bought it (http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2005/db2005-195.htm).
Arthur 2005-05-12, 05:24 PM Time to get on the phone to *C and pick your 9 HD channels.
digitaldude 2005-05-12, 06:34 PM Lets see...
HDNET
HDNET Movies
HBO HD
SHOTIME HD
TNTHD
ESPN HD
Discovery HD Theatre
& ABC, NBC & CBS HD
Is that nine, damn, I miss my Voom.
I am happy that I have no interest in sports on TV. I find myself daydreaming when it's on, and totally bored with it. All of the HD channels that *C offer are perfect for my needs. If they kept them just as they are now, that would be fine with me. :-)

Hmmm just have my first *choice receiver dropped off by Purolator-DSR500, now it is here and awfully tempting to book an appointment to have an installer come by but I think I am going to try and wait this out and see what happens with the High Def channels.
What do you think?
BSmithern 2005-05-17, 03:14 PM trellaine,
It's up to you (I've never seen someone take so long to make a decision) ;)
The dropouts on NBC are annoying, but who knows what is going to happen with the HD channels now that the omnibus channels will be gone shortly.
trellaine 2005-05-17, 03:29 PM Haha you were one of the main people who helped make my decision. ;) But like you mentioned, who the hech knows about the HighDef channels and where there going or not going.
Although you wouldn't think with the new PVR released that *choice would be going backwards??? and not forward???
My decision was based mainly on PQ, Customer Service and Programming?? of HIgh Def.
Grrrrowl!
BSmithern 2005-05-17, 03:33 PM Although you wouldn't think with the new PVR released that *choice would be going backwards??? and not forward???
You would think, but in this business you never know. I tried to get a certain member in this forum to give me some details as to what will happen with *C and HD, but no go... ;) He doesn't trust me... :D
trellaine 2005-05-17, 03:50 PM Hmmm interesting stuff.
Think I will try and wait if my conscience and impulse will allow me to. Hard to see a new electronic toy sitting in front of me and not using it. Maybe I should hide it in my closet for a while. ;)
Thanks for all your help though!! I really do wanna be with *choice but who knows what their direction will be.
Cheers
J
trellaine 2005-05-18, 01:13 AM I went ahead and booked an installation date for Saturday. Thanks DD and many others help me make an informed decision. Now just hope everything else works out as I would like. :p
