I personally don't care to see any Canadian HD content, because it will probably lead to simsubs on the HD channels.
Based upon the Bell forum, CTV HD is certainly not worth getting...the picture quality is supposed to be really bad compared to the US nets.
I've heard rumors here and there that Star Choice won't carry TSN HD because TSN is demanding they dedicate an entire channel to it, instead of just carrying the HD content like the other channels. With the pitiful amount of true HD content on TSN-HD, Star Chocie said "no thanks". (Being that TSN is owned by Bell, who also owns Telesat, which owns the satellite space Star Choice uses, it makes sense...)
Anywho, that bit is totally uncomfirmed...

Agree completely. CTV and Global HD channels can stay off of *C IMO. We already get all "their" content from the U.S. stations. We don't need them...

283 is MovieCentral and is only available to subs west of the Manitoba/Ontario border.

Much like 285 is soon to be TMN HD and will only be mapped in EAST of the MB/ON boarder...

I was looking at Starchoice PDF file regarding the High Def content and the channels their available on but my question is this: why do they show 4:3 programming on the High Definition channel guide?? I thought high def is 16:9?

Thanks

What we REALLY need is a group effort to support the CCTA (Canadian Cable Television Association) in their CRTC application to sponsor for broadcast in Canada, both of Mark Cubans 7/24 channels "HDNet" & "HDNet Movies"

If/when it comes back NHL in HD in fantastic as well a 24 hourr HD coverage just like a regular network, say Global/CTV like with a total variety of programming.

With the CDN HD networks having ~ 6 hours of HD per week, why bother burning a channel just to say you did. Reminds me of the early days of color TV when you watched it because it was in color, even if you didn't like the program.
Much like the HD bigots of today. Give me HD or give me a black screen.

How stupid does BELL think consumers really are? 25 channels of same old same old.

And compare CTV's (BELL) Discovery HD to the REAL U.S. Discovery HD Theatre that has 7/24 16:9 HD content.
I've yet to see ANYTHING but 4:3 up converts on the lame BELL Discovery HD.

While were at it, since Playboy is licensed in Canada, how about their new Playboy/Spice HD combo like Voom carries.

No Red Sox VS Yankees in HDTV on Starchoice. What are they thinking ...Just looked in the guide no HDTV MLB Sunday night baseball, instead they show the same show on 3 channels. I would like to get a confirmation that Starchoice will be showing all that Sportsnet will be offering in HDTV. Come on Starchoice...Get serious.

So checking this I notice lots and lots of greyed out boxes in the programming? Isn't that suppose to mean that particular program is not being broadcast in High Def?? If so, why even list it??

Thanks

Thanks for the info and the link. Still don't understand why they can't have a guide showing the right schedule.

For those that are using the High Def receiver: does *choice offer a lot in the sports high def department programming or does BEV offer more on the sport front??

That is mostly what I watch and I would like to make a realistic and good decision on which offers better quality and quantity of sports high def programming?

Thanks

I've got Star Choice HD but don't watch much sports. The few things I have watched (like SuperBowl and basketball) look unbelievably good. Clearer than real-life, if thats possible...

Is this *C way of introducing subbing on HD channels? This afternoons Nascar race from Martinsville was shown on two HD channels from Rogers Sportnet and one HD channel from FOX Detroit. I was glad I had the choice, but how long will that last? Fox was in DD 5.1, was Rogers?

Cancom has a contract to deliver Sportnet HD to Rogers Newfoundland cable head ends. Sportnet HD programming is always available.

Yes, like all satellite and cable companies should, *C gives you the choice of watching the originating feed or the Canadian feed. It is nice that they give subs the choice. That's the way it should be.

Well, most of us are excited that the long awaited HDPVR will finally arrive, but what about programming? Some have said that Starchoice has no 'space' for more HD. Is this true? What about the Canadian HD stations? I know there isn't much HD content but will we ever see it?

I'd prefer Starchoice charge extra for the HD and compete with Bell. I know many will disagree but since getting my Home Theatre, HD and DVD's are all I watch! Seems that if Bell can offer an HDPVR before the end of Summer, they'll still have the upper hand.

I see that you are in the Niagara region, you are probably better off going with Cogeco as they have more HD Channels available (ie, TSN, Discovery, CTV, CBC, SRC and PPV). I don't think the West feeds are offered in the Niagara region yet.

The weird thing with Cogeco is they only offer the HD/PVR, they don't have the DCT6200 (which is somewhat similar to the DSR500)

There is additional capacity available when it makes sense, not when you think it makes sense.

The HD on Canadian stations is just a rehash of original US content.
Why not watch the source.
I sorta like the idea of my sat company bucking the establishment a bit.
Sure add CITY-TV, but say NO to CTV/CBC/GLOBAL as they would likely have to take something away if FORCED to carry it.

Many would agree that NO HD fee is preferable, when what is delivered is close enough for most to compete with Bell and not really miss much.

No business spends money without some return on it. At least SC increased subs and continues to turn a profit. Thats good news for us shareholders.

Now if I had a bigger stake in BCE, I'd tell them to dump ExpressVu's money loosing poor customers service business as an embarasment to a respected conglomerate.

When the time is right, things like the F1R and F3 and different coding rates and modulation schemes will all work to expand SC HD content.

I for one am not particulaly worried.
Do you seriously think they would have spent the time, effort and dollars to develope leading edge HD receivers only to discover they are bandwidth bound?
I think not.

Agree completely. We don't need CTV/Global for example. We already get the same content from the source (ABC/NBC/FOX/CBS). Why do we need to rehashed CTV/Global feeds of these same programs?

I wrote a letter to *C asking them to keep the HD channels just the way they are, as I really enjoy getting the true feeds from the original U.S. channels with no simsubs.

BEV was simsubbing Global east on their HD U.S. nets when I left and I'm sure CTV simsubs are not far behind. That is the #1 reason why I left BEV.
