: Old CBC HD (Official thread) 2005 to May 2006.
Interesting.
In a Rogers ad in the Globe today, in the comparision it had HD CBC on Rogers but NOT on ExpressVu. Wonder if there is something they know?

Perhaps... ;)
james99 2005-03-02, 01:12 PM You mean the world leader in HD doesn't carry the CBC, shocking. Perhaps they object to the CBC just like they do with FNC.
Remember all those CBC reports slamming BEV for selling illegal recievers (and customer data) along with all that illegal porn Bell was showing.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's how BEV really feels. ;)
biglyle 2005-03-02, 03:38 PM WOW, I cant believe the most watched news show in the country wont be in HD on the nations government funded HD channel.
At least upconvert it and show it in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Especially considering, for example, that all Big 3 American Network affiliates in Seattle (definitely not a huge market) can afford to put up all their local daily news in high definition.
Hmmm Seattle... Canada.... Seattle... Canada... Certainly a head scratcher...
Apparently, they were going to brodcast in HD but their lawyers forced them to put the following disclaimer on screen prior to each news bulletin:
Atention: Owners of certain types of HDTVs may experience burn-in on their TVs as a result of the reflection of the lighting off Mr. Mansbridge's head.
So they changed their minds... :p
Téléphage 2005-03-02, 04:06 PM At this point, nobody at BEV can tell for sure when they will offer SRC-HD and CBC-HD. As a matter of fact, they don't believe they can provide their subscribers with this service anytime soon (unless the guy who told me that was misinformed, which wouldn't be surprising considering the poor customer service I've been getting from BEV lately).
If any BEV customer reads this post, please call BEV and the CRTC to put some pressure on them. They make me feel like I am the only one complaining. CBC is our national public broadcaster and everyone is entitled to this service. Every BEV subscriber should ask to be compensated for each day without CBC-HD past March 5th.
Well I just read on pirate network (whoops I mean alt.satellite.expressvu)
CBC HD: 802 for east feed and 808 for west feed.
CBFT HD (SRC): 860 for east feed and 863 for west feed.
The poster said those were the numbers given by ExpressVu last fall so it could have changed.

Hmmm Seattle... Canada.... Seattle... Canada... Certainly a head scratcher...Seattle: FCC mandatory DTV compliance in action. Canada: CRTC shrugging its way along.
cheers,

At least upconvert it and show it in 16:9 aspect ratio.I could be wrong but I don't remember seeing US network news in HD.
I don't think we should be dissing CBC - they haven't even officially begun broadcasting and they already have shown more HD homegrown content than Global and CTV combined.
They are also making an effort to show programming in widescreen where available (i.e. British programming). We haven't seen any English Premiership soccer games in widescreen on Sportsnet but presumably they are shown in widescreen in the UK so why doesn't Sportsnet have them in widescreen?
nfitz 2005-03-02, 04:54 PM WOW, I cant believe the most watched news show in the country wont be in HD on the nations government funded HD channelAs I would expect that ad would be sitting on the the desks of the folks running Express-vu today ... that they will adding CBC-HD shortly, and will be pissed that their minions hadn't added it already.
I expect (this is a Rogers ad, right?) that this was just opportunism on the part of Rogers to get the ad in quickly, before Bell added it. Quite amusing!!

how many Networks does the US government own?
Wayne 2005-03-02, 05:18 PM how many Networks does the US government own?You mean besides Fox News and CNN ;-)
My point here was that we are years behind the US and if even their network news is not in HD then it is a bit of a stretch to expect the CBC to be doing news in HD. I know that a few local news programs in the US are in HD, as is Omni news, or at least it is in widescreen and looks very sharp.
Why should government ownership make a difference? News is one of the shows that I am least interested in having in HD especially since remote reports will be in SD for a long time to come until the whole world adopts HD.
Danster 2005-03-02, 05:19 PM News are in HD all the time on OMNI...if you speak mandarin :o

And my point was that if relatively small players like privately-owned Seattle local stations can afford to put news in HD, you would expect CBC to be able to do so when considering their double-dipping method of funding (coming from advertising as well as government allocations) and the fact they are a national network.
Anyway, I'm just sayin...
Of course, I, too, have bigger fish to fry... like trying to get Shaw cable to add an HD channel. I would sooner take on The Rock in an arm wrestling match as far as my odds of winning go...
Danster 2005-03-02, 08:19 PM Is it just me of the "D" in HD is now showing whereas a couple of days ago, the only letters visible on the screen were "CBC H"?
I watched Antiques Roadshow in HD...very nice color and PQ. Not true HD I think but much clearer than analog SD...
I noticed just now that CBC HD is running the UK Antiques Road Show in 16x9. When I did a side-by-side comparison, it was quite clear that the original 4x3 broadcast was slightly letterboxed but CBC is cropping the top and bottom to make it 16x9. I don't believe the show is "cropped". I also just did a PoP side-by-side. I believe what you're seeing is "Overscan". Most TVs have about 4-6%. Mine has about 3% and I believe I was "missing" about that 3%...
The show tonight is actually from Toronto...

Murfle 2005-03-02, 09:41 PM BTW, I just confirmed this with some contacts in UK who do contract work for BBC.
Hmmmm, I wonder if CBC-HD will be broadcasting the new Doctor Who series in 16:9, since it sounds like thats the BBCs main format... I will be seriously disappointed if they dont. (Mind u, i dont get CBC-HD yet, but its the principle ;))
I'm now checking out the Fifth Estate, regarding that Charlatan Benny Hinn. When they have programming that was originally shot 16:9, then everything's fine on the HD channel, vs SD. However, when the programming was not 16:9, the top and bottom are cropped on HD, resulting in the tops of heads being cut off in a lot of scenes. They need to utilize a stretch mode or something for this material, or show it 4:3...
