: Old CBC HD (Official thread) 2005 to May 2006.
Thanks for the heads up Marc. Sounds fascinating.
Since there's probably not going to be much on over Christmas that I want to watch, I'll record this and it might cheer me up at that time. ;)
nfitz 2005-11-24, 04:38 PM Since there's probably not going to be much on over Christmas that I want to watch, I'll record this and it might cheer me up at that time.Yikes, if I watched that alone on Christmas, I'd be tempted to go out and jump in front of a streetcar aftewards! Seriously though ... does look interesting!
(there does seem to be some new programming this year over Christmas ... looks like NBC will broadcast a new episode of West Wing on the 25th (I guess the fundamentalist Christians aren't a big fan-base!) and of course, CBC is airing a new episode of Doctor Who on the 26th!)

Alan Bealby 2005-11-28, 04:36 PM I am curious. What is the source of the SHAW CBC HD channel?
I had assumed is was the Toronto CBC HD station but it does not seem to carry any local programming. No local news or shows that are clearly local and not for the national network.
I also notice that the logo is just the letters CBC, the CBC logo and the letters HD.
Doesn't the Toronto CBC HD broadcast carry some local programming even if it isn't in HD?
magnet 2005-11-28, 05:23 PM Tune to "Canada Now" at 3:30 pm PST on CBC HD East. You will see local news from Toranna.
Alan Bealby 2005-11-29, 12:01 AM I am not that familiar with all of the CBC programs but I thought Canada Now was clips of news or stories from all over Canada. Certainly the title doesn't bring to mind local news.
I will record it tomorrow and check it out though. I lived in Toronto for 25 years until I moved back to BC 9 years ago. Don't really know whether I want to watch the Toronto local news or not but would like to sample it for a bit.
The first half of Canada Now is from CBC Vancouver. It is done 5 times a day, but certain segments are tape delayed. The second half is from your local station.
Alan Bealby 2005-11-29, 09:01 PM I checked Canada Now this afternoon and found that the first half hour was from Vancouver and the second half hour was from Toronto as was reported here. I must admit, it still seemed to be more of a magazine style show than a hard, local news show to me. Getting my CBC content, the little that it carries, from the local CBC affiliate for the last nine years has gotten me out of touch with a lot of CBC programming that isn't also carried on CBC Newsworld.
One thing that did strike me, though was how good the quality SD originated picture can be. I saw an upconverted colour test pattern on the CBC-HD at sign-off last week and used my blue filter to check the settings. It was almopst dead on and today's Canada Now picture reflected it. No grainy noise as is endemic on my analog channels even if I by-pass the cable box and the colour was georgeous.
CBC News has always been more of a news magazine style. The previous BC show, called Broadcast One, always had a 7-9 minute segment at :20 past the hour. These were done in advance, with 2 or 3 editors taking a few days apiece. It's a different take on news, just like the National has less news/weather/sports.
JesseJ 2005-12-01, 01:38 AM Marc, do you know if/when the National will be broadcast in HD, or WS? Or is even something being talked about.
All programs will be HD eventually. The National is high on that pecking order. I have no dates.
JesseJ 2005-12-01, 01:40 PM Thanks! Thats all I wanted to hear!
Dates are not as important as the affirmation that it is a priority.

Thank You Marc for the infirmation, keep up the good work
nfitz 2005-12-01, 07:03 PM Why is it an odd choice, given SRC has excellent ratings while CBC does not... I wouldn't be surprise to see better numbers in some smaller markets in QC compared to CBC in bigger cities. It's an odd choice for CBC. If they will always do pairs, then it's a logical choice ... but I've had not indication that it will always be done in paris.
They'll be done by pair, not individually. That can't go on forever though. There are many places where the transmitters are not anywhere near each other now.

Marc, FYI, in case you miss it...

nfitz 2005-12-04, 10:37 PM Hmm, CBC's HDTV schedule for next week says that "This is Wonderland" is HD. That's a first.

keelor#1 2005-12-05, 01:49 PM "This is Wonderland" is HD. That's a first.
I think the last half of season#1 was show in HD (week or two after CBC HD went live), and all of season #2 has been HD.....or at least I thought it was HD, maybe upconverted SD?
Transmitter testing begins Monday December 12. Programming will begin in a few weeks.
Channel 58
Danster 2005-12-09, 03:10 PM Would that station then be included in Timeshift programming for the providers that do offer timeshifting?
That's entirely up to the cable and satellite distributors. It's available to any company that wants to carry it.

Channel 58Thanks Marc, I'll pass that on. Will SRC-HD on 16 also be going live at the same time?
