according the the newsletter BEV must provide the channel according to the CRTC, but they are not. Unless it's a Toronto only thing. Can someone with BEV in Toronto confirm that they do or do not have it?

This past week on CBC Radio One in Toronto they had a discussion about HDTV on the Andy Barrie show. Andy spoke to a makeup person and a set designer, both with the CBC, who spoke about how their jobs are changing due to HD. They have to be much more thorough than in the past.

This morning, both HD channels were broadcasting in 5.1 sound. I watched a cartoon in HD and it sure looked nice.

Why are the HD channels from the Ottawa region on ROGERS cable? I thought they were coming from Montreal or something.

I already emailed CBC about that, asking why their HD launch is being kept so quiet. So far I have yet to hear back from them.

I just checked the guide and see that there are two HD shows listed starting at 7pm tonight (5th) which are independent of the main network.

Which guide are you checking? The guide on the Toronto OTA channel 20 is displaying bugs life at 7 and bravehart at 9 same as the cbc website.

I wonder if Braveheart will be in HD tonight?

No CBC HD on my 6100. I would assume it would be on channel 802 when it does arrive.

This really pisses me off...CBC-HD is here...and I am not allowed to watch it.

If the NAZI CRTC sees fit to force me to watch the Canadianized, (sim-subbed)...version of real tv...why are they not forcing BEV to provide us with our own Government funded HD channel...oh that's right...BEV doesn't own the CBC...only the CRTC...

I applaud the CBC for driving real HD in this country...unlike CTV and Global.

I spent one hour on the phone yesterday with a representative from the office of the Vice-President at Bell. No one knows if (let alone when) BEV will offer SRC/CBC-HD to their subscribers. I already complained to the CRTC and to the CBC. I am ready to go even further with this as of Monday if the service is not made available to us by then. I sure hope other BEV customers will do the same. I truly am outraged and I feel I am the only loud mouth here. Wake up, BEV subscribers, and do something! The CBC is our national public broadcaster and it is our right as taxpayers to get this service from our cable or satellite service providers. I think we should demand to be compensated for every day we don't get this essential service.

I spoke to a service rep yesterday and he said they will (not should) have CBC HD within the next few weeks and that it is part of the $10 HD Value pack so we don't need to pay extra. He sounded as a matter of fact and I don't see any reason why he would say something that isn't santioned by his superior. However, seeing all these complains about BEV in this forum, I will keep an open mind and patiently wait a couple of weeks.

And no, as of 10AM PST this morning there is no CBC HD on my 6100.

Cheers.

BEV runs its HD channels on Nimiq2 at 82 degrees. According to LyngSat (http://www.lyngsat.com/nimiq2.html) it appears that transponders 7, 8, 11, and 29 are presently unused. I guess satellite capacity excuses can be disregarded then, so I wonder what the excuse is for BEV not being ready to offer CBC-HD when cable companies are apparently already doing that?

cheers,

BEV added Global HD the nanosecond it was available, and they haven't brought us a second of HD programming we couldn't otherwise already see elsewhere. Get with the program BEV, if indeed you are serious about calling yourself the HD leader in this country. It's been a long time since CBC had this kind of positive buzz...

However, not all transponders on Nimiq2 are operational due to the technical problems encountered shortly after launch. The 4 you mention appear to be the non-operational ones.

I totally agree...this is a crock...here is the, (canned), response i got from BEV:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We hope that you are enjoying your Bell ExpressVu Satellite system.
The CBC HD Channel has not yet been added to our existing lineup. Once the channel has been added, we will be sure to inform our subscribers.

If you have any further questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at our toll free number 1-888-SKYDISH. Here is the number to call if you want to lodge an official complaint against BEV re SRC/CBC-HD: 1-866-317-3382. This is the number of the office of the Vice-President where Bell customers are invited to call whenever they are not satisfied with the regular customer service. When you do call, DO NOT use your keypad to navigate through the system. You will only get to talk to a computerized voice. In order to talk to a real person, wait until your call is transfered automatically (as if you had a dial-phone). Mention the fact that CBC-HD is submitted to the standard must-carry rules, as stated in CBC's HD Newsletter (HD Times).

I think such talk can lead to cherry picking of the government control. If you accept the CRTC regs to demand carriage, then you must accept the right of the CRTC to block carriage.

Is everyone demanding the CBC HD also OK with the CRTC rejecting HDNet?

CBC HD is not an essential service. HD is a luxury service accessible mostly to well-to-do citizens. Only when the analogue transmission is cut should the DT become subject to carriage rules, in my opinion.

There seems to be quite a lot of macroblocking in the CBC HD material this evening.

And the screen activity doesn't seem to be sufficient for it to occur.

I wonder what CBC HD's bit-rate is?

I was watching the CBC HD Showcase this evening. It seems that there was some sort of strobing on fast moving scenes as well as macroblocking on very bright scenes. It looks like they have a way to go to get there HD ready for prime time!
